HBO cancels 'In Treatment' 'as previously formatted'

HBO just made it official: In Treatment will not return for a fourth season.

The psychotherapist drama won plenty of critical acclaim and Emmy and Golden Globe attention, but has never been a ratings winner (the network has to pay for Game of Thrones somehow, folks).

UPDATE: HBO clarifies (sort of) with a statement: “It’s true that we have no plans to continue with In Treatment as previously formatted. However, we are in continued conversations with the executive producers to find another way to continue telling these rich stories.”

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

That’s the exact reaction I had when I saw the headline on the home page. I really liked this show because it was unique and emphasized story over action. I liked the fly on the wall aspect of peering into these characters lives at their most “raw” moments. It really made these characters seem like real people with real issues. Plus the Amy Ryan-Gabriel Byrne episodes were a force of understanded acting at it’s finest.

That was my reaction too. I am so disappointed it is being canceled. Interesting and compelling stories with rich characters isnt enough, I guess, for audiences.

Shame!!!!! Such a great show with a talented new cast every year that expressed such vivid emotional depth and conviction! With Friday Night Lights and now this…the television drama landscape is way dimmer….

  • Will

    Darn. I loved that show.

  • googie

    Oh No! Great show!

I got to be honest, I loved the first two seasons of this show, but the latest season was somewhat uninteresting. I LOVE Amy Ryan on “The Office.” but she was miscast here as the new therapist (why did they recast in the first place). The writers didn’t seem to know what to do with her, like they were wanting to have her hook up with Paul, but the chemistry between them was missing. Also, the cases this time weren’t that interesting.

I did hope they would at least do a one episode wrapup just to see what Paul is up to, but oh well.

They recast cause Dianne Wiest no longer wanted to play Gina. it’s that simple.
And of all of the last season storylines, the only one I found interesting was Sunil’s.
And yes, I’d like to know what’s happened to Paul.

Considering last season, a few of the episodes got the “almost impossible” 0.0 A18-49 rating, I’m not surprised

I loved this show; what is wrong with HBO. They cancelled this and The Comeback. Bunch of idiots!

    PISSED!

  • JRWT

This season was not as good as the previous two. Too bad.

  • Ophie

    Bad news!I love the show!

  • Michael

UGHHHH, too bad…I love this show, but I’m not surprised it got cancelled. I don’t know anyone but me who watches it, and it didn’t get any media attention recently.

  • Andrew

    I can’t say I didn’t see this coming.

I’m one of the few who really liked this passed season (specifically the sessions with Adele and Jesse…and Sunil towards the end). I found it a lot more interesting than season 2.

At least we have the exceellent sessions we were given to look back upon.

You’re not alone liking this last season. I think in this show’s case, it’s very subjective, depending on how you respond to the patients/actors. For some reason, the characters from last season fascinated me more.

      • LP

I just started watching this show via Netflix. So far so good, although I have mixed feeling about where they take the characters from week to week. At times it feels like they have an entirely different person sitting on that couch. Is it always that wayward???

  • jordan

I agree the first two seasons were definitely better than last season. I already assumed it was done for good anyways. The way they wrapped it up with him quitting being a psychiatrist, I figured it was done. I thought the patients weren’t nearly as good the last season. I actually thought the Amy Ryan episodes were the best episodes.

  • B

Here’s a good idea. Why don’t you all go see a real psychiatrist. This may be equally exciting as watching a TV show about this subject. It can also keep you busy until they come with a TV show about a high school career counselor. ooooo

  • Cutie Carol

I love this show..I just think HBO needs to market it differently and it will have higher ratings. Plus they need something to replace Big Love
