A singer famously kicked off American Idol for her risque online photos is getting a second chance of stardom thanks to a show where judges aren’t allowed to even see the contestants.

Davis auditioned during a Thursday taping of the show by performing Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl.” The show’s “coaches” Judges Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton rejected the singer, but Christina Aguilera voted “yes,” putting Davis on her team. On The Voice, judges cannot see the contestants until after they’ve rendered a verdict.

“Frenchie is an interesting personality who was left high and dry by Idol,” said an insider on the show. “It’s an amazing story that Christina picked her despite not having a clue who she was.” READ FULL STORY »

Nathan Fillion talks fan campaign to resurrect 'Firefly': 'I think that that's love. I don't think that's fanaticism'

The first time we talked to Nathan Fillion for this week’s cover of Entertainment Weekly, it was shortly after 9 p.m. ET on Sunday, March 6. Fans of Firefly, which was canceled by Fox in 2002 after 11 episodes, will recognize that date and time as the day reruns debuted on the Science Channel. Fillion did not. “Is that tonight?” he asked. ”I knew it was going to record because I got the old search term ‘Nathan Fillion’ [programmed on my TiVo], so if I’m doin’ somethin’ it pops up. But am I doing anything special? No, I am not doing anything special. I thought I might go to a movie tonight.”

That sounds like the (healthy) response of a man who’s let go of the past, but, of course, one of the reasons fans love Fillion is because he hasn’t. Speaking to EW.com in February about Science Channel’s plans to rerun the Joss Whedon space Western — and seriously, how many actors with a current show, ABC’s Castle, averaging 10.6 million viewers do interviews for reruns? — Fillion innocently mentioned that were he to win $300 million in the California lottery, he would buy the rights from Fox and don Capt. Mal Reynolds’ tight pants again. READ FULL STORY »

'American Idol' ratings fall to season low: What's to blame?

What happened to American Idol‘s ratings last night? The show dropped 16 percent to another season-low, 19 million viewers and a 5.6 preliminary rating in the adult demo. If NCIS didn’t air a repeat on Tuesday, the CBS drama would have given Idol a run for its money as the week’s most-watched series. Last night’s hour was the lowest-rated edition of Idol since the show’s first season, which aired during the summer.

Insiders have a theory, pointing to the fact that overall TV usage was down 12 percent in the hour this week: “Daylight Savings Time + St. Patrick’s Day = Low TV Viewership.”

At any rate, it’s not as if anybody else came close to matching Idol‘s rating, and Bones (11.9 million, 3.4) ranked as the night’s highest-rated scripted show. CBS aired college basketball instead of scripted, while NBC’s comedies hit season lows across the board: Community (4.2 million, 1.7), Perfect Couples (2.9 million, 1.2), Parks & Recreation (4.4 million, 1.8), 30 Rock (4.4 million, 1.7), and Outsourced (3.9 million, 1.4).

Anyway, I’m sure readers have their own theories about Idol‘s ratings that do not involve sun exposure and drinking holidays. What do you think?

Official: Netflix buys David Fincher's 'House of Cards'

Categories: Television

It’s official: Netflix is going all-in the TV series game, buying House of Cards. The David Fincher series starring Kevin Spacey will be made available to the company’s 20 million members in late 2012.

“The gripping, serialized one-hour drama has become a very important part of the Netflix experience,” said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos. “David Fincher’s unique vision, the indelible performances of Kevin Spacey, and the original version of House of Cards all have a big following among our members, giving the series a very good chance of becoming a fan favorite.”

Netflix committed to 26 episodes (or two 13-episode seasons) produced by MRC, with Fincher directing the pilot and executive-producing the series. House of Cards is based on a book and BBC miniseries; the U.S. version follows an ambitious politician (Spacey) with his eye on the presidency.

Private Practice star Grant Show has landed a role on USA’s Burn Notice. The actor will have a recurring part in the upcoming fifth season, playing Max, a CIA operative. Show will appear in three episodes, starting with the season premiere (which is intriguingly titled, “Company Man”).

Show has been a busy man of late; he also has a role on HBO’s Big Love this year.

USA has yet to reveal the premiere date for Burn Notice — this summer is a safe bet — though it has announced that the eagerly anticipated prequel movie starring Bruce Campbell, Burn Notice: The Fall of Sam Axe, will air April 17. Today, USA announced return dates for the third season of White Collar and second run of Covert Affairs. Both will debut this summer, airing Tuesdays starting June 7.

'American Idol' exit Q&A video: Karen Rodriguez says she will 'never regret anything' -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

Karen Rodriguez, the 21-year-old New Yorker who was eliminated from American Idol Thursday night and was the only finalist who auditioned on MySpace, says she doesn’t regret any of her decisions on the reality series. “I went up there, and I always sang from my heart,” Rodriguez told EW in a backstage video interview an hour after the results show. And even though her Idol journey ended prematurely, the half-Peruvian, half-Dominican singer is thankful to have received this crash-course lesson on how to become a professional artist. “[Idol] gives you a taste of what the rest of your life could be,” said Rodriguez. “It’s like a whole packet of little experiences that I’m going to take forever.” As for the person she’s going to miss the most, the answer was easy. “Jacob and I bonded so much from the very beginning in Hollywood week,” she said. “He would always come to me asking me about his song choices, and I would always go to him when I needed advice. He was a joy to be around, and I’m so excited for him.”

The CW will likely pick up a fourth season of 90210 but one major player is planning to leave the zip code: EW has learned that showrunner Rebecca Sinclair has decided not to renew her deal. The news was first reported on TVLine.

“Rebecca’s contract was up so it was no surprise to us at all,” said a spokesperson for CBS Television Studios, which produces the drama for the CW. ”We have a very strong staff and we have been exploring various people and are confident we’ll find the right replacement.”

90210 just wrapped production on its third season. Sinclair, who joined the show after the first year, was credited for injecting some much needed luster into the teen angst series. It’s unclear who will take her place.
