Top TV earners: 'American Idol,' 'Two and a Half Men,' 'Desperate Housewives' top list

Forbes has tallied its annual list of the biggest TV moneymakers and, no surprise, Fox’s American Idol led the list for 2010.

Idol delivered $7.11 million every half hour last year (wow, even the padded results shows?), which was down 12 percent from 2009.

That was followed by CBS’ Two and a Half Men, with $2.89 million per half hour (which gives you an idea why few think the show is going away despite Charlie Sheen exiting). In fact, showrunner Chuck Lorre has three shows in the Top 10.

In third was another series going through some cast issues, ABC’s Desperate Housewives with $2.74 million, which has some actors in contract negotiations. Here’s the Top 10 from last year: READ FULL STORY »

Megan Mullally is going to be the butt of all jokes this Sunday on Bob’s Burgers. The former Will & Grace star is voicing the character of Linda’s quirky sister, Gayle, who likes to create paintings of… how should we put this… animal bums. Linda persuades Bob to hang Gayle’s questionable artwork in his restaurant (which really should be some kind of health code violation). You’re probably not going to see a story line like this on any other show this year, so assuming animated animal anatomy doesn’t offend you, press play to check out an exclusive clip from this Fox comedy… IF YOU DARE.  READ FULL STORY »

Another Syfy freshman show is getting a second season. On the heels of yesterday’s news that reality show Face Off will return, Syfy has just granted another round of Being Human.

Syfy notes the show has averaged 1.8 million viewers, making it the network’s most successful winter scripted series launch in six years. Also, the show has a 53 percent female audience, making it the channel’s most female-skewing series ever.

Being Human has proven to be a winner for Syfy on all fronts,” said Syfy programming president Mark Stern. “Using the original format as inspiration, showrunners/writers Jeremy Carver and Anna Fricke – along with a superlative team of writers, cast, and production – have created an amazing, compelling series in its own right. We can’t wait to watch Aidan, Josh and Sally continue their struggle to be human in the second season!”

NBC reaffirmed its commitment to three of its critically beloved comedies today by announcing 2011-12 pickups for The Office, Parks and Recreation and Community.

“I am so pleased to renew these three outstanding comedies which are all at the top of their game creatively,” said Bob Greenblatt, NBC Entertainment Chairman, in a statement.  “Along with 30 Rock, they represent the best of what the NBC comedy brand stands for in terms of originality, wit, and sophistication. The Office continues to fire on all cylinders on the most competitive night of television, Parks and Recreation has come into its own this season as the rightful companion to The Office, and Community is one of the freshest comedies on any network and a solid foundation for Thursday night.”

NBC has yet to decide whether to renew Perfect Couples or Outsourced. It’s likely that call will be made at crunch time in early May, when the Peacock is preparing to announce its fall lineup to advertisers in New York.

The Office averages a 4.0 rating/10 share in adults 18-49 and 7.7 million viewers. Parks earns a 2.8/7 and 5.5 million viewers, while Community gets a 2.1/6 and 4.7 million.

How to replace Charlie Sheen's character on 'Two and a Half Men': Showrunners weigh in

Before Warner Bros. picks a new actor to replace Charlie Sheen on Two and a Half Men, creator Chuck Lorre and the studio first must decide: Who is the new character? Is he a party animal? Or maybe an uptight buffoon like Charlie’s brother Alan? Or is he actually a she?

Before Warner Bros. TV can start searching for Sheen’s replacement — and despite all the rumors, the studio that produces the CBS comedy hasn’t narrowed it down to any one person — internal strategy sessions have begun to figure out the best way to proceed with the seven-year-old comedy, EW has learned. It’s not as simple as grabbing another famous name like Rob Lowe (unavailable due to his work on Parks & Recreation) or John Stamos (who says he’s not interested).

The studio and Men creator Chuck Lorre aren’t talking, but Hollywood scribes have an opinion on how TV’s most-watched comedy can — and should — press ahead.

“The tricky thing about that show is that it’s basically The Odd Couple with a kid,” said one comedy showrunner. “If you did something other than that kind of character, then the theme of the show changes, and the whole reason for the show’s existence changes, and you’d have to do some significant groundwork to figure out what the new show is and then cast it based on that idea.”

But who says Sheen’s character has to be replaced by another bad boy? A veteran comedy scribe says this could be a great time to shake up of conceit. READ FULL STORY »

'Glee': Behind-the-scenes of last night's PaleyFest panel

What do 2,000 Gleeks sound like when they’re all together watching Tuesday’s episode “Original Song”? LOUD. They are very, very loud. Last night, I had the privilege of moderating the Glee PaleyFest panel at the Saban Theater in Los Angeles during which producers opted to screen this week’s crazy-good episode. Backstage, the cast and creators, including Jane Lynch, Matthew Morrison, Ryan Murphy, and Brad Falchuk, watched the episode and could hear the joyous fan reaction (the Blaine/Kurt kiss definitely seemed to be the favorite moment).  READ FULL STORY »

The Daylight Savings Time shift continued to impact ratings on Wednesday night with overall TV usage down about 4 percent from last week. Fox’s American Idol (22.2 million viewers, 7.4 preliminary adults 18-49 rating) was way out in front, yet dipped 9 percent.

CBS placed second for the evening with Survivor (10.6 million, 3.1) hitting a series low and Criminal Minds (13.7 million, 3.6) steady. But newcomer Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior (10.4 million, 2.6) went against the overall trend for the night and rose 18 percent to win 10 p.m.

ABC aired repeats and a steady-but-low Mr. Sunshine (4.6 million, 1.8) and Off the Map (4.2 million, 1.4). READ FULL STORY »

'Glee' scoop: Blaine and Kurt try to go to prom! Plus, more spoilers from PaleyFest

Look who’s about to get some matching tuxes ready! EW has learned that new couple Blaine and Kurt will attempt to attend their high school prom, which may not be a simple proposition. ”That story is going to be ripped from the headlines,”  creator Ryan Murphy told reporters tonight in Los Angeles. “Can you imagine two boys wanting to go to the prom in Ohio?” Murphy later elaborated slightly during a panel discussion moderated  by EW’s Tim Stack, teasing that the big dance will feature a performance or two from the Warblers.

Speaking of Dalton Academy, now that they’re out of the running for Nationals, Murphy said fans shouldn’t worry about less Blaine in season 3. “I think Blaine might have to try out for New Directions,” he said to roaring applause.

Murphy — who together with the Glee cast is participating in a Paley Center tribute to the Fox show — also announced that Kristin Chenoweth will reprise her role as the boozy former glee club star April Rhodes. And here’s an exciting change in Glee’s modus operandi: The plan in the near future is to center an episode around Fleetwood Mac’s 1977 album Rumours.

Showrunners and cast were relatively mum when it came to the specifics about how some of Glee‘s many couples would be shaken up in the episodes to come. But Murphy did offer up news on the romantic future of Mercedes (Amber Riley), the only member of Glee who has not had a romantic interest, saying that this summer’s Oxygen reality show, The Glee Project, will aim to find a guy for her. “One of the things that was in the back of my mind [when conceptualizing the character] was, ‘How is this guy going to be with Amber?’” he said. Riley added jokingly, “I’d like to be part of this process.”

In the beginning, HBO made its name as the only place for great original TV programming free of the constraints of broadcast television. Then Showtime made its mark, with show’s like Weeds and Dexter, and recently, AMC has emerged as the place for amazingly fresh storytelling, with Mad Men, Breaking Bad, and The Walking Dead. Now Netflix wants in. EW has confirmed a Deadline report that the video-streaming company is in exclusive negotiations to secure two seasons of House of Cards, a much-anticipated TV series from Kevin Spacey and David Fincher. Spacey would star in the show, which would take Michael Dobbs’ 1989 book and 1990 BBC miniseries about the British conservative political party and set it in the United States. READ FULL STORY »
