Tonight’s episode of Criminal Minds is a big one that I’ve already teased. But in our inaugural conversation, Matthew Gray Gubler (Dr. Spencer Reid) pretty much sums it up better than I ever could. Proceed for insight from the star and second-time CM director as he talks about what it was like having A.J. Cook (J.J.) back on set, the farewell of Paget Brewster (Emily Prentiss), and… tiger blood?

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: How was it giving directing a second shot?
MATTHEW GRAY GUBLER: It was as great as the first time, if not even better. It’s sort of one of my main loves in life, so it was tremendous to be in the directing frame of mind and in the chair. READ FULL STORY »

It’s definitely good to be Mike Fleiss: Not only did the 15th edition of his reality show The Bachelor finish strong on Monday, ABC renewed the unscripted series for a 16th season and picked up The Bachelorette for a seventh (premiering May 23). The network has also granted a second season to Bachelor Pad, meaning it will have some form of Bachelor related programming on its schedule eight months out of the year.

Still in a party mood over Monday’s finale, Fleiss talked to EW about his new bachelorette, that spoiler sport Reality Steve, and why we’ll never see a complete unknown hand out roses ever again. READ FULL STORY »

Tonight’s episode of V is not the end of the game for the character in many ways — that much we know. (Exec producer Scott Rosenbaum said there will be a cliffhanger that leaves fans wanting more.) But the episode is what star Elizabeth Mitchell calls not only one of the best of the series, but the punctuation mark on a season where cast and writers have invested everything they had to offer in order to earn a third season.

“I fought so hard and so did everyone else,” she tells EW. “All of the writers, all of the actors, we all tried to put our best foot forward. I feel like we’ve given it everything we can. We’ll see what happens.”  READ FULL STORY »

Christina Aguilera says new 'Idol' rival reality show 'isn't about tearing people down'

The four new judges — excuse us, we mean coaches — met with the press for the first time today to talk up The Voice, NBC’s new singing competition that’ll bow April 26. Sitting in their special over-sized chairs that swivel around when they’re ready to see the contestants, the pros talked about how the show will allow them to “mentor” newbies – not trash their dreams.

“It’s less about being judgmental and more about helping them out,” says Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine, who will serve as one of four mentors along with Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green and Blake Shelton.

“There is no good and bad,” Aguilera continued. “This isn’t about tearing people down. I want to bring these people up. The Voice really does stand for what it says. Instinctually, you can judge people based on the way they look. I love that fact we get to sit here with our backs turned away from these people and completely use just one sense to hear these voices. I’m not looking for vocal acrobatics, who has biggest range [of] high and low. I’m looking forward to getting moved.” READ FULL STORY »

Why publicists aren't worried about stars embarrassing themselves on Twitter

Categories: Advertising, Television

Message for @Gilbert Gottfried and @50 Cent: You are what you Tweet. And, especially in Gottfried’s case, that could lead to trouble. Earlier this week, both the funnyman and the rapper used Twitter to become the center of news — though it’s likely they didn’t make the headlines they were hoping for. After some not-so-sensitive Tweets regarding the earthquake and tsunami in Japan (“I just split up with my girlfriend, but like the Japanese say, ‘They’ll be another one floating by any minute now’”), Gottfried lost his job as the Aflac duck and 50 Cent (“Its all good Till b—-es see there christian louboutins floating down da street sh– gone get crazy”) became the target of online ire. In fact, both celebrities’ Tweets were so insensitive, it’s impossible not to wonder, What were they thinking? But we imagine no one is pondering this thought more than the person responsible for the stars’ images: Their publicists.

Indeed, Twitter has introduced an interesting double-edged sword for publicists since its 2007 creation. READ FULL STORY »

Gilbert Gottfried apologizes for Japan tragedy tweets, Joan Rivers defends

After being fired as the quacking spokesperson for Aflec (and doubtless receiving a ton of outraged messages), comedian Gilbert Gottfried apologized Tuesday for his offensive tweets mocking victims of the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

Returning to Twitter, Gottfried wrote two hours ago: “I sincerely apologize to anyone who was offended by my attempt at humor regarding the tragedy in Japan. I meant no disrespect, and my thoughts are with the victims and their families.”

Joan Rivers, meanwhile, offered her support for the jokes via Twitter: “Oh come on people—this is just outrageous! Gilbert Gottfried was FIRED from Aflac for making jokes about the tsunami in Japan.” And then added: :That’s what comedians do!!! We react to tragedy by making jokes to help people in tough times feel better through laughter.”

Gottfried had penned jokes such as “Japan is real advanced. They don’t go to the beach. The beach comes to them.”

'American Idol' does PaleyFest: Jennifer Lopez's breakdown, Naima Adedapo's 'overstanding,' and who's the biggest troublemaker of the Top 12?

Last night, the 28th Annual PaleyFest saluted TV’s biggest show, American Idol, with a lively panel discussion at Los Angeles’ Saban Theater. Those in attendance included judges Randy Jackson and Steven Tyler (both of whom were wearing wacky scarves, which you can see at left); executive producer Ken Warwick; head of alternative programming at Fox, Mike Darnell; and nine of the show’s Top 12 contestants. (Minors Lauren Alania, Scotty McCreery, and Thia Megia who were too busy with schoolwork to attend the event.)

“This… is PaleyFest!” said Entertainment Weekly’s own Dave Karger, who was enlisted to moderate the session and took on the task of channeling the absent Ryan Seacrest. Karger kicked off the night with a short introduction centered on the first story he wrote on the show, a cover article featuring Justin Guarini, Kelly Clarkson, and Tamyra Gray back in 2002. He chuckled over touting the show’s “10 million viewers” at the time — a laughable number, considering the show now garners about two and a half times that many viewers per episode. What a long way American Idol has come — that idea, indeed, was a theme of the night, as was everything from the crowd’s adoration for Steven Tyler to Naima Adedapo’s vocabulary. Here’s a rundown of the evening’s highlights:

Ratings alert: What you're watching if you're 11, 50 or 34 years old (the results may surprise you!)

Steven Tyler and J. Lo don’t necessarily appeal to everybody who watches TV.

American Idol may be the most popular show in all of TV – the Wednesday editions have averaged 25.8 million viewers while the ones on Thursday pull in 24.2 million. But the singing competition doesn’t hog all the glory in the house of Nielsen – especially when it comes to specific demographics like kids, young men, and adults over 50.

So we did some digging! The following results are based on a survey of all shows between Sept. 20 and March 6. (We singled out the male demos versus the female ones since they’re the toughest group for advertisers to reach): READ FULL STORY »

Fran Drescher's sitcom near series pickup

Categories: Television, TV Biz

Here’s one the populace has been clamoring for: The patented whine of Fran Drescher returning to series TV.

The actress’ comedy pilot Happily Divorced is nearing a series order at TV Land. It’s about a woman who re-enters the dating scene and finds a new boyfriend after discovering her husband is gay.

Now if that sounds an uninspired logline for a sitcom, it’s actually autobiographical. Drescher revealed last year that ex-husband Peter Marc Jacobson is gay and that she didn’t know his true orientation throughout their 21 years of marriage. Marc is also her collaborative partner who produced their previous comedy The Nanny and is on board for Happily Divorced.
