AMC developing alien contact drama from 'Breaking Bad' writer

AMC is developing a new drama series about man’s first contact with extraterrestrial life.

John Shiban (Breaking Bad, The Vampire Diaries) is working on a project called The Voyage that’s in contention for a pilot pickup. The show is billed as a realistic take on First Contact with an ambitious female scientist who works with a team at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory as the lead character.

The project is one of several in contention at AMC, but has more buzz than some (two others are The Man With the Golden Ears, about a record executive, and The 4th Estate, about a D.C. investigative journalist — but let’s face it, you want the alien one, right?). Given AMC’s success with zombies on The Walking Dead, wouldn’t surprise me at all if network tackled extraterrestrials next.

If you’re a fan of HBO’s Hard Knocks, then you may want to take a gander at Showtime’s upcoming docuseries The Franchise: A Season with the San Francisco Giants.

As EW first reported in January, the new series will give viewers a “front row seat into the lives of the players, coaches and team.” It bows July 13, but the pay cabler will offer a 30-minute preview of the docuseries on April 13 to coincide with the start of the baseball season.

Here’s a sneak peek. Special mention to outfielder Andres Torres, who breaks a sweat in nothing but his True Religion jeans. READ FULL STORY »

Kirstie Alley responds to fat joke by George Lopez

Dancing with the Stars contestant Kirstie Alley used Twitter to respond to a crass comment from comedian George Lopez, who likened the 60-year-old actress to a pig on his TBS talk show.

“Don’t worry about George’s comments,” Alley said on Twitter (she has more than 740,000 followers). “Just remember what happens to the big bad, drunk woolf …falls in a boiling pot of vodka. Piggy laughs.”

During his show Wednesday, Lopez said Alley “did a nice job, her little hooves tapping away. Before the show, she went to the market, and then she had roast beef and this is her going all the way home!” he said, before cutting to a squealing pig from a GEICO commercial.

Alley made light of her size during Monday’s premiere of Stars. At one point she joked that if anyone asked her to haul ass, “it would take two trips.”

FX cancels 'Lights Out'

FX’s boxing drama Lights Out is not getting a second round. Yes, FX has knocked out the show. Lights Out has lost its fight for a pickup. How many other bad puns are possible to make here?

The network is canceling the grim, but critically well-regarded drama after one season. The show debuted modestly back in January with 1.5 million viewers. The final two episodes will air in the show’s usual Tuesday slot.

On the plus side, FX has its new comedy Wilfred coming up in June. The pilot is terrific, with the question being whether its unique concept (man played by Elijah Wood sees neighbor’s pet as a talking man in a dog costume) can bring in a large enough audience and sustain its unique comic pitch week-to-week.

Elizabeth Taylor: 'Simpsons' exec producer Al Jean remembers the film legend's one-word turn as baby Maggie -- EXCLUSIVE

While Elizabeth Taylor made her greatest impact on the big screen, she entertained on the small screen as well. In a 1992 episode of The Simpsons, she voiced the first word ever uttered by baby Maggie: “Daddy.” Simpsons executive producer Al Jean shares his memories of Taylor’s recording session with EW.

“There was nobody more famous or glamorous. Usually for the records, the room was almost empty — we’d have the cast and then a couple writers. That day, the recording stage was completely filled. She came in, she had a little dog, and she wore her ring, which was huge. It cost more than my house. We had her do the one line where she said ‘Daddy’ as Maggie. I’m looking at the ‘Most Beautiful Woman in the World,’ trying to think, ‘What does that sound like coming out of a cute little baby?’ I asked her for a lot of takes because it’s very hard to know what you want on one word, but she was really funny about it. After I said, ‘Okay, we got it!’ she said ‘F— you!’ in the Maggie voice. READ FULL STORY »

Some juicy details have emerged about the much-anticipated Anthony DiNozzo origin episode that will air May 3 on NCIS: EW has learned exclusively that Scott Grimes (ER) will play Det. Danny Price, an ex-partner of Michael Weatherly’s character. The two worked together 10 years ago while serving as cops in Baltimore.

Grimes, who already announced his gig via Twitter, will appear in one episode.

Back in November, NCIS flashed back 20 years to finally reveal what happened in Amsterdam to shape Leon Vance (Rocky Carroll), and what led him to become the director (a question fans had been asking themselves for more than two seasons). To prepare for the episode, Carroll spent lots of time in the makeup trailer to shave the years off (for more on his transformation, click here).

Will Weatherly go through the same process? Is it even possible to make the guy hotter than he already is?

'Futurama' renewed for two more years!

Good news, everyone!

Everybody’s favorite canceled animated Fox show (well, for Family Guy fans with long memories, second favorite) is getting a couple more years of life: Comedy Central’s Futurama has been renewed for two more years, say sources close to the production.

The network has picked up another two cycles of 13 episodes — and neither include the upcoming batch that launches this June. So that keeps Futurama on the air through 2013. (Whether the order is called the seventh season, or the eighth and ninth season, is still being debated — since seasons on Comedy Central are split over two years, do you call each year’s batch a season or do you call the full 26 episode order a season?) At any rate, last season averaged 2.5 million viewers per week once DVR is added in.

'Idol' wins Wednesday: 'Sunshine' up, 'Survivor' dips

Categories: Television, TV Biz

After hitting lows during the first week of Daylight Savings Time, some broadcast shows perked up slightly on Wednesday, led by Fox’s American Idol (23.5 million viewers, 7.7 preliminary adults 18-49 rating).

In second, CBS didn’t receive a boost, however, airing Survivor (10.8 million, 3.0), which was down 6 percent to a series low. At 10 p.m. Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior (8.9 million, 2.2) fell 12 percent to a season low — likely due to not having an original Criminal Minds lead-in this week. READ FULL STORY »

Ed Harris cast as John McCain in HBO's 'Game Change'

Categories: Casting, Television, TV Biz

Veteran actor Ed Harris has been cast to play John McCain in HBO’s upcoming adaptation of the best-selling book Game Change: Obama and the Clintons, McCain and Palin, and the Race of a Lifetime, by John Heilemann and Mark Halperin.

The four-time Oscar nominee will play the Republican candidate for the film’s depiction of his 2008 presidential campaign.

Previously, HBO cast Julianne Moore as Sarah Palin in the movie. It will be directed by Jay Roach, who won an Emmy for helming the HBO movie Recount about the 2000 presidential election recount battle, and adapted by Recount scribe Danny Strong.

Harris seems like he could knock this role out of the park, no?

'Deadliest Catch' producer talks upcoming season and new show 'Coal'

COAL-DEADLIEST-CATCH

Thom Beers, exec producer of Deadliest Catch, Ice Road Truckers, and Ax Men, is known for being the king of the dangerous job genre of reality TV. Without that reputation for delivering quality, guilt-free Testosterone TV (something he’ll speak about at next month’s NAB Show in Las Vegas), his latest docu-series, Spike Coal‘s, premiering March 30, may never have happened. It took Beers four years to find the right coal mine to turn his cameras on: He needed a company willing to trust that he would show what working underground is really like (that’s where his credits came in handy), and he needed the stakes to be high. “We’ve learned over the years that you can’t get into a big corporation. To make these shows really work, you gotta ache with these people. You’ve got to feel for them,” he says. He settled on Cobalt Coal, located in Big Sandy, WV, co-owned by Tom Roberts and Mike Crowder. (For Justified fans, the shared last name Crowder is “just a nice touch,” Beers says.) These two have their own money in the business, and they’re struggling to keep it afloat. “Every week, you want to be saying, ‘are they gonna make payroll?’, and it’s real. That authenticity is the key to this. We’re not scripting these shows. The whole idea is to find the right set of circumstances, which is why it took four years. Then you have to add on the special sauce, which is the spice — the characters. You gotta look and say, ‘Can these guys carry a story? Are they interesting characters?’”  READ FULL STORY »
