A heavily touted musical episode of Grey’s Anatomy was a time slot winner on Thursday: The special installment that featured Sara Ramirez and her impressive pipes earned a 4.8 rating/12 share – up 30 percent from last week — and 12.7 million viewers, according to early estimates. The episode ended up doing a solid for Private Practice, which saw a 4 percent boost in ratings (2.7/7, 7.6 million) versus last week.
Each 18-49 ratings point represents 1.3 million viewers.
Still, there was no battling the Death Star. American Idol rocked the night across the board in all demos and averaged 22 million viewers. Fox, as a result, won the night across all key demos and beat the next highest rated network by 68 percent in 18-49 (5.2 vs. ABC’s 3.1) and 36 percent in viewers (16.4 vs. CBS’ 12.1 million). Last night’s show was also up 7 percent in total viewers (22.0 million versus 20.5 million) compared to last year.
The stellar lead-in helped Mobbed (3.8/10, 10.8 million), Howie Mandel’s new unscripted show that stages unexpected flash mobs. It beat an original of CSI (2.8/7, 12.4 million) by 36 percent.
NBC ran repeats.
And so am I … by asking you to follow me! @EWLynette

It may have been a smash in term of ratings, but it was horrible. I was expecting something more along the lines of the Buffy musical, Once More With Feeling. What I saw was a train wreck with a rehashed sound track.
The song choices didn’t bother me, I think the concept would have worked if they were more consistent with the reason for ppl singing and just executed it better. But…Sara WAS incredible.
The reason was because it was from Sarasota point of view
**Sara Ramirez point of view like the movie chicago
Loved it! ABC must be singing with joy.
LOVED it. Cried and watched it twice.
They made it ckear for weeks that it would be NOTHING like the Buffy musical.
I loved it. Thought it was well done
If grey’s anatomy decided to do a musical episode because all the other current shows are doing the same, they should have specifically decided against it and NOT be a follower.. The episode was so bizzare.. Because of the music, it was so difficult to hear the few dialogues that did exist! Disappointing!!!
What currrent shows are doing the same?
Music is a secondary character on Grey’s, and the dialogue is often so melodramatic and poetic you half expect the characters to burst into song. This ep was a nice change of pace, with a great emotional wallop, loved it.
I agree with you it was a nice change. jb is just a stupid person. Sara my hat is off to you. You did an incredible job. What a voice! Beautiful.
agree! I had to record it but i deleted it because the music was bothering me! a musical in a hospital really???????
Stop giving us the ratings of DWTS, AI, and The Bachelor. We know ”everybody” watches. I hadnt watched Greys in 5 years and was bored so i gave it a shot. It reminded me why i stopped watching.
What were they thinking? A musical medical drama? Come on! I felt embarassed for the cast having to sing through what was supposed to be very sad and serious subject matter. I found myself just trying to “suffer through” the singing, just to follow the story line. Musicals and medical dramas do not mix!
I so agree!! I felt embarassed for the cast also!!! The only reason we watched was because we wanted to see what happend to Callie the singing part was so freakin annoying!!!!
I agree, I also “suffered” through the musical numbers so I can keep up with the story line. Wish they could re-do the same episode without the songs. I feel like I missed half of what was going on because I was zoning out during the singing. If they had wanted the actors to sing, they should have gone to the bar and sang kareoke.
House, Scrubs, Chicago Hope have all done musicals.
This was an absurd departure for a series I thought was improving dramatically. My husband and I howled with laughter through as much of it as we could stand to watch. Embarrassing, weird, stupid…
Good ratings, but it sucked. Thank God for DVR!
I happen to honestly really like the episode. The singing was amazing!!!!
Me, too!
Grey’s sucks. Bad.
It was just plain corny and totally out of context.
Grey’s Anatomy was terrible last night. NO MORE SINGING. Please someone tell the producers. Grey’s Anatomy is NOT Glee.
I agree, don’t let it stoop down to the horridness of Glee
This was one of the worst episodes of ANY show that I’ve ever seen.
Who thought this was a good idea?
I thought it was great!! Sara can really sing. I wanted to hear more and didn’t want the show to end.
Yeah she was amazing, and I enjoyed the episode a lot despite it having some flaws. It was the usual emotional rush and the last 5 minutes were brilliant.
The Show SUCKED!!! I don’t know why I watched the entire episode, I guss I wanted to know if Sarah Ramirez died.
Exactly!! like roadkill…
Please don’t ever do this again! Sara R could really sing, but maybe she should make a record instead. This was a crazy, worthless episode!
I thought it was incredible. I loved it!
It was AWFUL! Loved to hear Sara’s voice but seriously? A medical musical? What were they thinking? I watched it cuz I’m a Grays’ fan…not cuz of the tunes
I thought that the musical episode was some kind of april fools joke… It was so bad it made me feel embarrased to watch it!
I LOVED this episode!!!! They all have incredible voices and i thought it fit in the story line just fine. I give it 5 stars.
