The Kennedys were certainly a boon to Reelz. The world premiere of the miniseries on Sunday averaged 1.9 million viewers 1.3 million viewers and then another 600,000 for an encore telecast– a record for the basic cable channel that reaches 60 million homes.

“Viewers across America showed their ongoing fascination with the Kennedy family and, specifically, their desire to see such a star-studded cast in the highly-anticipated ‘The Kennedys’,” said Reelz CEO Stan E. Hubbard in a statement. “In acquiring The Kennedy’ our aim was to give viewers an opportunity to watch an incredible movie event with massive star power and to also put a spotlight on our network like never before.”

Reelz will repeat the first two hours on The Kennedys tonight at 8 p.m. ET/PT.  Episode 3 titled “Bay of Pigs” will air tomorrow followed by a new episode every weeknight at 8pm ET/PT through Friday.

    • connor

why don’t you go to your cable/satellite provider’s website and look there instead being lazy and posting on a website and asking for someone else to do it for you?

      • Dort

WOW, I never thought of that!!!Thanks for the insight azz crack.

      • Dort’s Dad

I raised you better than this Dort. Think a bit more and spare yourself ridicule.

“The Kennedys is destined to be a highly controversial, much-written-about TV event that almost no one besides people in the media and the relatives of the actors’ families will actually watch.” – Ken Tucker

I guess Ken Tucker is eating crow today. Hope crow tastes good.

    • JR

It posted record ratings for a network that no one watches or has heard of even though it’s available in 56 million homes. Also, 1.9 million includes multiple airings not just the initial telecast. I hardly see this as a huge success story and doubt those numbers will even hold up as it airs the next episodes this week.

    • Emma

I would hardly call 1.9million viewers an astounding number. It’s good for an obscure channel like Reelz but for a major player like HBO, it’s nothing.

      • Anne

1.9 million is bigger than the 1.2 million who tuned into the premiere of HBO’s much-touted “Mildred Pierce”. So yeah, I’d say Reelz just beat “major player” HBO’s programming.

      • JR

Except that HBO is available in 30 million homes vs. 56 million for Reelz and Mildred Pierce had about half the hype/controversy surrounding it.

      • Anne

        @JR
Oh please, Mildred Pierce had tons of hype, ads, and interviews all over the place. And it’s not like HBO can’t attract big numbers – The Sopranos finale, for instance, got 11.9 million viewers. But you’re ignoring the original comment: Emma claims that 1.9 million viewers isn’t good enough for a “major player” like HBO, and Reelz is too “obscure”. Well, thanks to all the controversy and hype, more people were interested in watching this historical miniseries on an “obscure” channel than they were in watching “major player” historical material from HBO. And by the way, the HBO John Adams miniseries only had around 1 million viewers as well, and that was even more hyped than Mildred Pierce. I’m just saying, deserved or not, Reelz beat HBO on this one.

      • JR

First, I’m not Emma so I didn’t make that claim. Second, you’re ignoring the fact that Reelz didn’t release the numbers for the first airing only the combined totals so we can’t actually accurately compare the two. It’s very likely that Mildred Pierce got around the same or higher ratings when multiple airings are factored in. At the end of the day HBO doesn’t put as much of an importance on ratings the same way other networks do, they care about subscribers.

Ken sniffed at “The Kennedy’s” becasue it didn’t fit his political agenda. His review seemed less about the mini-series than it did his political persuasion, which is an unfortante trait in a critic.

      • JR

Only conservative sites gave the miniseries a good review, so I guess Ken wasn’t the only one that let his political leanings get in the way. It’s the same reason it was made in the first place. A conservative producer wanted to make the Kennedy family look bad.

  • Ardiva

Pretty good movie, except for the horrid commercials every 10 minutes.

  • animatdjul

Its a trip. CNN and other Newsgroups speculated that only the media would be watching. I’m glad the Kennedy Family couldn’t squash that mini series. Reelz took a chance and it was a good gamble. There are several generations that have little clue to who the Kennedys were & are. Its a legacy worth knowing.
    Good job Reelz.

    • Mary Miller

I so agree that this series was a huge success. Whatever the political arena you are in it’s always good to see another spin. There’s always some level of truth now it’s up to us to take away what we beleive to be those truths.

I have Reelz channel on my sat tv, and I didn’t go anywhere near that steaming pile of dung. To each their own…

  • Robert Dorff

Reminded me of “DALLAS”. But the basic background data was valid historical fact.

I have never understood the fascination with the Kennedy family, and I never will.

  • jtin CA

I loved it. What dogs they were!

  • John Berggren

I wonder if the viewership of FauxNews dropped by the same number that viewership of Reelz increased…

    • juemad

We’ll find out over the next 9 days! Watch with us! It’s fun!

  • Buffy Freak

Amazing that an original, controversial and ridiculously hyped movie set a record on a network that airs Becker, 3rd Rock from the Sun, Cheers and Ally McBeal reruns as well as 5 hours of infomercials a day.

    • juemad

Wow! You sure know alot about Reelz! Did ya whip out the TV Guide or did you recall that all from memory?

      • Buffy Freak

LOL! Had to look at my cable listings but did know about Ally McBeal and Cheers….also NewsRadio and Brothers and Sisters reruns!

  • Kato

Im a Kennedyaholic but i found nothing new in this movie. Though i felt Barry and Greg did fantastic. Katie Holmes is another story. I rarely heard Jackie speak but i doubt she was that mangled in accents.

    • Jan

Katie Holmes couldn’t act to save her life.

  • Ken in STL

Re “The Kennedys:” Since History dumped it and Reelz picked it up, I’d be interested to know what the average and record high viewership is of series on History, and how many households does History reach vs. Reelz 60 million?

  • Gayle

WAYYYYYY to many commercials!!!! 5 minutes of The Kennedys and 7 minutes of commercials!

  • ksko

Is it just me or is the score of this movie the same as in Dynasty????

  • Sharon

Great miniseries. For those complaining about the commercials, TIVO is the greatest.
