'The Voice' first look: Judging the coaches' pipes!

No, the coaches aren’t suppose to audition for the audience. But in this first look from NBC’s The Voice, coaches (not judges) Blake Shelton, Cee Lo Green, and Adam Levine attempt to entertain the audience during the show’s blind audition portion by crooning the theme to The Golden Girls. (Don’t ask).

Where’s other coach Christina Aguilera, you say? Probably off camera, playing with her spinning chair. Remember, the conceit of this show involves the coaches selecting finalists based solely on their pipes. All four have their backs to the contestants in those spinning chairs while they decide who’s “lucky” enough to move on to the finals. Ooh, the anticipation!

The competition series from Mark Burnett debuts April 26.

Will sing for followers @EWLynette

I think the premise of this show is flawed. I understand that the judges are only “judging” on a person’s voice – and aren’t supposed to be looking at the contestant.

But don’t producers “weed out” the contestants before they go in front of the judges? So what’s the point of “The Voice”? It’s pretty much an identical copy of American Idol at this point – with 3 annoying judges to boot.

I agree it’s flawed and seems to be very dull. At most, they can get 30 minutes w/ this concept, not one hour. NBC doesn’t have the best track record with reality.

And another question I have is, don’t these judges know who these professional singers are having worked with them in the past or heard their Youtube recordings?

    • Templar

Lynette, did you mean to write conceit or did you mean concept?

      • Mindy

She meant “conceit”. Look it up.

    • Lactose Intolerance

Umm… where’s the clip? How do we hear the song they’re singing?

    • Shaun

that isn’t the bulk of the show. What makes this show different and exciting is the fact that the judges actually work with the contestants. They bring in their musicians, producers, etc and help the contestants become artists in the studio. I think it’s really awesome! I cannot wait!

    • Whatever

No, it doesn’t have all the STUPID audition drama that happens on American Idol. No sob stories, no getting through because they’re physically attractive, no nonsense. Then the contestants choose which judge they would like to have as a mentor throughout the show. And they have to have mini sing offs for elimination. The concept is fresh. Read up about it before writing it off!

And apprently the show will have rejectees or winners from other singing Reality Shows, like Rockstar and American Idol. Winner Luke Rossi of Rockstar and Frenchie from American Idol. So apparently they are going after talent that have loads of experience and not newbies to the business… So it’s a load of bull that they aren’t looking at the face…

    • orville

I thought that was him in the commercial. But it’s not as if Rockstar Supernova really generated a lot of work for him.

    • Jacob

How does that make it a load of bull? If they audition and they have a great voice, they move on, its as simple as that, regardless of whether they’re an unknown or someone who’s had some success. At least they don’t go out of their way to forbid those people from auditioning like American Idol.

Also, the producers may know these singers, but i was ar the taping, and the coaches knew absolutely nothing about anyone auditioning…they didn’t know they were hearing Frenchie or Lukas unless they turned around for them?

    • Whatever

Well, those people aren’t making it in the real world. They aren’t successful. They want another shot at their dream, and so they tried out for “The Voice” and got in. BIG WHOOP.

  • Elizabeth

I’m only tuning in to see the judges… especially if its retreads from AI and other shows. (thanks Stacey – I knew I recognized Luke from somewhere.)

  • candy

I am just excited to see how this show will hold up against American Idol. I truley wish them the best.

    • the Vicster

aren’t you as sweet as sugar…

  • Andre

Typo – “the conceit of this show”

How about “the CONCEPT of this show”

    • Leslie

Actually, “conceit” is correct in this context, meaning that it’s a specific, stylized concept.

      • Andre

        Gotcha. Thanks Leslie.

      • No!

That is NOT what conceit means, Leslie.

      • Matt

“Conceit” just means “idea,” in one definition.

    • Other Mel

LMAO. I’m so sick of these armchair editors! Dear Andre, please consult the nearest dictionary. Conceit is correct.

    • Mindy

Again, she meant “conceit”. Please look things up before you criticize people.

  • k

I actually like that anyone can audition for the show. Unlike American Idol, you can’t be disqualified from participating because of some lame reasoning. While producers may choose some people that have participated in other shows, that doesn’t guarantee that they will make it past the auditioning phase. The guy who won Rockstar supposedly didn’t get chosen by any of the coaches so he didn’t make it past the blind auditions. Frenchie was only chosen by Christina. If anything, it just goes to show how much some of those other shows take into account looks over vocal talent. It’s interesting to see who has a fighting chance based solely on their voice.

    • sally0

I agree with you and I’m looking forward to this show.

    • Mindy

Indeed. I have a friend who was rejected by the American Idol producers because she “wasn’t pretty enough”.

  • Woody7

Where can we see the video? It’s not on NBC.com

  • yes

    it’s worth a shot

  • maya

will i would like to watch the show for the judges coz they seems to be cool people and talanted and the concept is friendly and help people to open thier minds about talant and i hope it will stand up against AI and X factor and have the same or more rate coz the judges are talented so this will be fair for talanted people

  • yay

YAY! I am looking forward to this show! It’s a PUNCH IN THE FACE to American Idol.

  • You guys need an editor

“No, the coaches aren’t suppose to audition for the audience.” <– TYPO! It's "supposed"
