Two days after a new round of Katie-Couric-is-leaving-CBS stories hit the internet, now comes word that another high-profile newswoman may be abdicating her post. According to a report in TV Guide, Meredith Vieira will step down as the co-anchor of NBC’s Today when her contract expires in September.
Supposedly, the early morning hours — combined with the health of her husband, who has fought cancer and multiple sclerosis — are behind her decision to leave. Apparently, NBC won’t let her go without a fight. ”NBC is doing everything they can to convince her to stay,” an insider told the publication. And here’s the official company line: ”The Today show anchors are currently under contract and firmly in place.”
Vieira, 57, left ABC’s The View to replace Couric on Today in 2006. Couric, meanwhile, is expected to vacate her post with the CBS Evening News to pursue a daytime talk show. Her contract is up in June.
Is Katie going back to Today? Could work out.

I know they say you can’t go back home, but it would be great if Katie returned, I’d watch her again.

Seriously, I miss Katie on Today and Meredith on The View. They were both their best on those respective shows.

I agree. Meredith is amazing, professional, articulate and funny. I would miss her if she left. The reason I watch the Today show over its competitors, is because of the people. I really like the team there and I like Meredith more than I liked Katie, Deborah N, or Jane P. If she’s leaving for another show or being pushed out, I’ll be very disappointed. But if she is leaving for family, then I understand. If she leaves, I hope its for her own reasons and she’s happy with the decision.
I like Meredith; seems down-to-earth. But if she does go, I’d like to see Natalie Morales bumped up to that spot. She already does a lot on the show.
I would like to see either Natalie Morales or Ann Curry take that spot.
That would be great if Couric went back to Today.
Hated Meredith on Today. I stopped watching all together after that choice. If Al would leave, I might tune back in.
Meredith is one of tv’s honest,
don’t-need-to-put-on-a-show people, ranking right up there with Diane Sawyer of ABC’s evening news.

Couric was great on the Today Show but I don’t see her going back. When Vieira took over, I drifted away from the show. Just don’t like her chemistry with Matt Lauer. What NBC needs is to find someone new and interesting because the morning shows are not terribly exciting lately. GMA is a dud since George Stefanopoulos came on board. CBS is a non-factor. Timing is right for NBC to make a splash.

I prefer Meredith to Katie. Matt Lauer is so full of himself- M keeps it real and shoots him down when he deserves it. K just cuts everyone off, and said “I know” all the time, (just like the horse on Mr Rogers Neighborhood.) She is SOOO annoying!

I hope Meredith leaves, she is horrible on the show. She continues to hit Matt Lauer(poor guy!) and she doesn’t remain neutral in political interviews, which she is supposed. She is a horrible interviewer and needs to leave!!!
How about bringing Savannah Guthrie on board. She’s old enough to fit in (39, she’s sharp as a tack re: news and she’s just plain ‘sharp’.
