We have yet another clip of Extreme Couponing for you, readers! And this one is downright ridiculous! Couponer Rebecca has separated her loot into 7 individual transactions so she can maximize the use of her grocery store’s offer to get $10 off of every $50 purchase. The problem? The deal is only one per customer. Cue: panic. So Rebecca and her husband start calling a bunch of their friends, hoping five of them are bored enough to drive down to the grocery store so their friend can save $10.
The two-episode premiere is tonight … and I can’t wait!

'Extreme Couponing': Please, sir, I want some more

oh, HELL NAW!!!
You don’t know what they do with the extra. Maybe you should keep your “sick” comments to yourself
it is donated to various charities throughout St Louis.
these people are absolutely an embarrassment. they’re sitting there giving an interview in their stockroom filled with 5 years worth of groceries and they’re calling people to come down so they can save an extra $30 total on things they probably don’t need. they just want the thrill of the discount. sick.
Actually these people are smart!! Look at the money they are able to save, I myself do the couponing thing and I haven’t got it down to an art like they have…in these times you have to save where ever possible.
Read further. TLC edited out all the information regarding the charities all that stuff goes to. AND they were encouraged to overstock on purpose to make for a better segment.
TLC edited out how long it takes to get ready to shop, nor did they bother to show how incredibly organized they are with the couponing.
I think it’s cook that they can save so much money, but why can’t they offer to shop for a homeless or women’s shelter or church or someone who needs help? Then they can shop as much as they want and get off on using coupons while still helping people. I seriously doubt they would ever be able to use up all the food they have stockpiled.
sorry…I meant “cool”
Jen I agree with you. If they just had an individual help them learn how this can save money. I clip coupons and I try to understand how they do it. If I could get it down I would be willing to help others or agencies get more for their buck. If anyone does do this give me some tips really trying to get it down. Thanks
Donations are a choice; don’t push your ideals on to someone else. They are taking a prime opportunity to save themselves money in an economy that is ridiculous.
Handouts are what is ruining this country.
I don’t disagree that it’s great that they’re taking advantage of the savings. good for them. but, seriously…they can only eat so much of that themselves. all I’m saying is if they have the time and inclination to donate their couponing skills to an organization that can benefit, then why not do it? it’s a win/win for everyone. if they don’t want to, fine…it’s just a suggestion. no need to get bent out of shape.
There’s no difference of them buying bulk here or at a large discount superstore. I’m quite sure that a family can have food reserves that’ll be used. This one trip
may be a quarterly trip to avoid many shipping trips. There’s no need to push charity or donation, is all. That’s why there are adminstrators and organizers for those establishments; to put together a positive situation and construct a means to budget and save; not everyday people who need to do “their part”
I’ve seen the show and it strongly suggests that for quite a few of these people, they really just enjoy couponing and getting a deal. They could stop buying non-perishables and toiletries for a year and still have plenty left over but they continue to buy because they love getting stuff for practically free. who wouldn’t? anyway, that’s not my point. all I’m saying is these people have a really amazing skill that far exceeds that of the average consumer which is why there’s a whole show about it. personally, I think it would be really cool if they wanted to teach that skill and/or share the benefits of it with others. I’m not asking them to give away their food.
I don’t know them and I don’t know what they do or don’t do and I certainly don’t wish to judge them or tell them how to live their lives because it’s none of my business. I just think it would be awesome if they could use what they know how to do to help others. You don’t think they should have to and, theoretically, I agree with that but it could really make a big difference. Yes…charities have administrators, etc. but it’s the every day person volunteering their time that gets stuff done.
I’m a chef and do some volunteering (cooking for families in need in the community) for a few hours every month. times are tough here too. It’s helpful, but I am in awe at the potential they have to give. A food pantry could give one of these ladies $100 and they could probably buy enough food with that to last a very long time. I just think that would be great…that’s all I’m saying
Actually Jen, I know these people. And what the show has forgotten to mention ( i.e. they cut it out in editing) Rebecca and Chris donate A LOT to charity. But they couldn’t leave that in the episode because that would make them seem a little less crazy. They need drama for tv.
I’m sorry…I didn’t want to come across as picking on your friends in particular. It was more thinking out loud about extreme couponers in general (who, yes, may very well be volunteering but we’ll never see it, unfortunately). Thanks for sharing, though. I think that’s awesome!
Very true! I’ll not bother believing or even watching TLC again…
You shouldn’t make judgements on them, I am Chris’s aunt and know that most of what they get “for free” from coupon-ing do go to help others. They only keep what they can use the rest they donate.
They don’t look like they need any more food
Whoever you are, YOU are ignorant to the core!
MAP… YOU look like you need to get a job instead of busting on people you don’t know!
I would go to the store if I could keep the $10 for myself but that’s nuts.
If anyone is intested in learning to coupon like the pros check out Frugal Gals on Facebook!
There’s a lot of bad mouthing here by people who assume they know what they are talking about. Chis and Rebecca donate to the St Louis food bank as well as to the Humane Society. Shame on you nasty people for passing judgement when you don’t even know them. What you see on TV is just a small bit of what they do and you should know that TLC is only going show what they think will get good ratings, so of course they are going to make all the people on the show look like crazy hoarders. No one would watch the show if they didn’t.
Thanks Carol! I know them as well and I was horrified by the show. The film crew told them what to say, the grocery scene was ENTIRELY staged, they cut some of the sentences in half to leave out parts where they say where they donate, and encougaged them to *overstock* for a better segment. I only wish there was a way to make those people retract most of what was aired since it was so far from the truth.
I think it is great. I am trying to learn how to do this. I believe this show is a form of reality that we can all take alittle time and save some money in this day and age. I would rather see the money saved in our pockets than pay full price for something. I think most people (like myself) feel that if you have more than enough food, etc, it is an honor to help others. Way to go!! If you have any tips send them my way.
What an article!! Best place to print coupons of major brands is called “Printapons” search online for Printapons
I have watched many shows on hoarding and was very ambivilant re the couponing , then realized like all the shows there is a lot of license to give the dram factor a chance. I would applaud these folks for their thrift and stanmaina, esp. if there a lot of kids to feed. I am glad some is donated, could they not teach volunteers to coupon for the food bank/shelters? I felt like a moth in front of a flame. Are they nuts or geniuses?
It is made to be extreme for TV. I am a coupon mom and it works. I have saved over $9,000 a year for the past two years. It takes great skill and organization but it is worth it. Couponing is life-changing. it allows you to take care of your family’s needs and wants.
