Matt Lauer to leave 'Today'?

Where in the world is Matt Lauer going at the end of next year? Perhaps off Today. In the wake of a report that co-host Meredith Viera is planning to leave NBC’s morning show when her contract ends in September, Entertainment Tonight is reporting that the more tenured host, Lauer, 53, has informed executives at the network that he intends to leave Today when his contract expires in Dec., 2012. Today released this statement on Wednesday: “There seems to be an awful lot of speculation around news anchors these days, and it’s not our practice to comment on any of it. Matt Lauer has a long term contract with NBC News and Today.” (Lauer has co-anchored the show since 1997 and the statement appears to leave some wiggle room on whether he will stay on past the end of his current agreement.) It’s certainly been an unusually busy week for news anchors and personalities: Fox News and Glenn Beck announced that his daily show Glenn Beck will “transition off” the network, while Katie Couric is believed to be departing CBS Evening News, possibly to host a daytime talk show.

These morning shows are garbage. Who watches this stuff?

    • kathy

      people who don’t work.

      • Typical Internet Guy

Yeah cause everyone works a 9-5 job… Even if that were the case the show starts at 7. Why don’t you go back to some teabagger rally kathy and leave the thinking for the adults.

      • jeff

Matt Lauer is the biggest piece of crap there is. What a WIMP!

      • jeff

You mean you ‘Typical Internet Guy’? What do you think about the View?

      • BIGboo

The Today show comes on at 7AM people. I work a typical 9 to 5 shift and always have it on in the mornings for at least the first half hour. Get a clue.

    • bringbackrocky

If they’re garbage, why do you feel the need to comment?

      • LOL

Why do you? Get the stick out your @ss and deal with it.

      • LOLisadouche

        Loser.

    • Bobby

Actually there are some really good stories on the Today Show. Why don’t you stick to watching the Kardashians, genius.

  • kmac

I hope he does not leave. He is one of the best informed morning show hosts. He is really prepared for his interviews and seems to take interest in his topics

  • JoeC

Sorry, but Matt Lauer is as replacable as Larry King was. No one would miss him….

    • maggie

I didn’t think it was possible, but Piers “I think I’m more interesting than any guest” Morgan makes Larry King seem irreplacable.

      • 867-5309

Exactly – Piers Morgan is a tabloid egomaniac who only cares about the sound of his own voice.

  • Michael

    No he so cool

  • Jasmine

Mart lauer’s time is up! He has made millions of dollars, and he is really not that good. I suggest they bring on a whole new dversed staff and forget the old boring routine! No Fox people PLEASE!!

  • bruno

ugh. is this all about raises AGAIN. laaaame.

  • Barack Palin

I think “Today” should get Glenn Beck to replace Matt Lauer.

    • Wow

I think Glenn Beck having no media outlet available to him is a stellar idea. Why mess with it by giving him a morning news show. Doing that would be a terrible idea.

  • JLC

Katie leaves CBS News…Matt leaves Today….coincidence?

  • Michael

I blame the ladys of the View they Hate Men and want them all to be jobless

  • carolae

People need to get a life. I agree, who watches all of these daytime shows! For Katie/Matt leaving their anchor jobs, I certainly hope that another network will pick them up. Perhaps Katie can take over Oprah’s spot when she leaves! I give them a year or more to make it and when the shows flop, out they go. Of course, with the millions they are paid yearly, they can retire. If you want to watch news, just go on the internet and read about it. News/talk shows are going to be a thing of the past in a number of years.

I watch the Today show as I am getting ready for work in the morning and the program suffers when Lauer is not on. I can live with Meredith being gone but she is hilarious and I will miss her. But I don’t think I could watch Today if Lauer left as well. He is intelligent, witty and quick on his feet with a great sense of humor. Also let us not forget that his interview with Tom Cruise was unforgettable.

    • TrishB520

I totally agree – I am a faithful watcher every day as I am getting ready for work. It’s disappointing when Matt is not on and I have a harder time keeping interested. Matt appears genuine, prepared and is always enjoyable to watch. I like Meredith too and hope they both can continue beyond the reported end dates of their contracts.

  • BIGboo

December 2012 huh? So THIS is the big ending that the Mayan calendar was referring too…

  • Elizabeth

I would use the term “newsman” loosely when referring to Glenn Beck…

The country’s demographics are changing, and we want diversity in our entertainment . I’m a 30 something year old black dude and watch the Today Show everyday as I’m getting my kids ready for school. I can’t relate to two middle age white folks that early in the morning and clearly I’m not the only one!!!!

    Change has come……

    • jj

Why don’t you watch Good Morning America? Plenty of diversity there.

  • jj

I am quite indifferent about Lauer. I remeber that he campaigned against Bryant Gumbel quite nastily and the result was that Gumbel left and Lauer got the job. Of the two, I think that Gumbel had and still has a more pleasant, easy way about him that engages the audience.

    • Bob

Where do you get your info? Lauer and Gumbel are close friends. There was no nasty campaign. And I have to disagree about Gumbel. He seemed to be a pretty self-important, pompous guy.
