'Titanic' miniseries: Linus Roache, Toby Jones on board

Just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale, a tale of fateful trip. That started from Southampton, aboard this Titanic ship. ITV’s four-hour miniseries about the doomed 1912 oceanliner is filling its cabins, with Linus Roache (Batman Begins), Geraldine Somerville (Harry Potter), and Toby Jones (Infamous) among the announced cast. The miniseries, which will begin filming this month in Hungary, will focus on different characters ranging from steerage passengers to upper class guests, according to a release from ITV. “Each point of view will culminate in a cliff hanger as the ship begins to founder … as the drama reveals which of the characters they have come to know so well will survive … and who does not.”

Sounds like the movie just with a much lower budget.

Are you kidding me?! What is wrong with another Titanic movie? This time with a real script and dialogue!!

I trust Julian Fellowes; it will be just as beautiful as the movie but far more subtle.

Anyone remember the Titanic miniseries from 1996 or thereabouts? Peter Gallagher and Catherine Zeta-Jones were in it (the latter just before she exploded as a movie star).

Why redo a classic? Nuf said!

Which of the SEVERAL Titanic films are you considering to be the classic? There has been a Titanic movie made almost every decade since 1912. The 1953 version and A Night to Remember from 1958 are both standouts. I don’t believe this is a redo of any of those films.

I hope the producers are aware that anyone willing to follow a series about the sinking of the Titanic had better put a fast and early focus on the actual sinking. The movie had great effects and that will be hard to compete with. Also, who cares about a bunch of characters who were never really on the ship anyway, Remake of Posidon Adventure understood what they were selling…not a retelling of Mr. and Mrs. Rosen’s tale, but the excitement of a sinking ship. Original did not start sinking effects for 45 minutes. Remake started special effects within 12 minutes of the titles. Get some good effects or skip the efforts! Upstairs Downstairs has already been done.

Four hours? So… three without commercials. So… only ALMOST as long as the Cameron version, then?

  • Deena

I’ll watch anything with Linus Roache in it.

Great idea. Anyone who visited the traveling Titanic exhibit that ran in some museums wanted to know more about the people on every level of that ship.
