Those who caught HBO’s premiere of Game of Thrones last night were treated to one of the most brilliant title credits we’ve seen in recent years. Created by a company called Elastic, not only does the sequence help orientate viewers to the land of Westeros by displaying a map of the Seven Kingdoms, but its intricate vision of a gameboard coming to life is both thematic and artful (the rousing score is catchy too). Watch the video below, then check out my recap of the premiere episode here.

I was mesmerized by the beauty of that opening sequence. Job very well done!
Why? It ran TOO fast.
I do agree that the names went by too fast. I could barely read them. But otherwise it was great.
Yeah, I thought it was really good. Especially considering so many series now opt for short uninteresting opening credits, if anything.
I loved the map section of the opening, but the fiery orb seemed out of place with the rest of it.
It will be more fitting in the second season.
I have a feeling the sun in the credits will become weaker as the season(s) progress and winter draws closer…
I’m thinking it’s the comet.
I like how at the end they show the symbols for the four main houses. It is just totally awesome
I really liked that
The bands around the fiery orb has the story of the slaying of the Targaryen King by Jaime and Robert Baratheon assuming the throne. It is a cool way to display some of the backstory by using the house sigils.
I haven’t watched the show yet, is it a show that I can watch with my parents and not feel uncomfortable?
Oh God No! It’s definitely rated TV-MA with lots of nudity and sex.
Depends on your parents. My parents yeah, but yours probably not. =)
Absolutely! I noticed my mom getting aroused at some of what was seen in the first three episodes. I mean REALLY aroused. It was disturbing, especially due to her age. Speaks volumes about the sex appeal of the show, at least those naughty bits. I am concerned.
She is 83, by the way. She’s asked to view the next episode without me, which also concerned me, followed by asking me to find the extension cord which used to be in the kitchen, behind the coffee maker. I dont remember where we put it.
It was brilliant. It not only gives you a sense of the epic scale of the series, it also informs you of the geography of the world. At the same time creating this interesting visual of the “game” board coming to life with the rotating gears and the buildings rising out of the ground. One of the best opening sequences in recent TV.
Still doesn’t top Carnivale, but yeah, it holds its own.
Will forever be my best!
Ok, it took me 4 views to realize this, but the opening credits sequence only focuses on 4 locales, which happen to be the same ones depicted in the first episode. Does that mean in future episodes, the opening credits will include Riverrun, the Eyrie, Casterly Rock, etc?
YES! Isn’t that cool?
Well, not Casterly Rock… we never see Casterly Rock except in flashback do we? But Riverrun, the Eyrie, and The Twins!
I liked it, though I have to say I prefer the Borgia’s one – its awfully pretty, if not as functional with very nice music.
Loved this. Reminded me of the great opening credits to “Rome” a few years ago.
I must have watched the credits about ten times by now and I still get chills. They better win some awards for it!
awesome!
i love this credit, and since I’m powering through the books after watching season 1, I’ve gone back to re-watch this a couple of times. Some mistakes in the sigil for some of the characters/actors, but overall amazing! And the end crown with the 4 sigils. Beautifully designed and the music is fitting as well. I don’t even wanna ask how much this opening costs… lol
You actually make it seem really easy with your presentation but I find this topic to be really one thing that I feel I might never understand. It sort of feels too complex and very huge for me. I’m taking a look ahead for your next put up, I will attempt to get the hang of it!
