Demi Lovato won't return to Disney Channel show

A Disney Channel spokeswoman confirmed a report in People that Demi Lovato, the star of Sonny with a Chance who took time out to seek help for personal issues, won’t return to the kiddie show that made her a star. The 18-year-old actress told the magazine that “it made sense for me to go ahead and leave the show to focus on my music. It’s kind of sad for me that a chapter of my life has ended but there couldn’t be a better time for me to move on.”

The network already made contingency plans by reworking the ‘tween series. The producers focused on the show-within-a-show, the comedy/sketch/music-variety “So Random!” It will feature guest stars, comedy sketches, musical performances and digital shorts and will bow in June.

Lovato is expected to continue to record under Disney’s label Hollywood Records.

That’s a shame. It’s really not as stupid as some of the other shows are.

    • lefty

Yeah, it’s actually one of my favorites.

    • Sg54

completely agree. only great show that was there. well, whatever. there you go, disney. the 2000s are over. Your precious miley, selena, and demi are gone. what ya gonna do now?

      • Zoe

You think there’s a shortage of good-looking teenagers out there for Disney to exploit? Even Disney knew that Miley, Selena, and Demi would grow up someday–of course they have contingency plans!

      • shif18

        Actually selena isn’t gone

    • m1

      Not to mention Hilary Duff.

      • Codi

god i miss the show lizzie mcguire i was just thinking about it today actually i had tears in the back of my eyes because i love to hold on to past memories like such

    • ha nah

i know seriously that and wizards of waverly place are the only things i watch

  • Rob

Good for her, break ties with the show, she will get back on her feet

    • Caiden

      good for her?

      • Bridgett

It can’t be she is is so good at acting. Her and Selena Gomez are my role models.I never thought this day would come.

  • KC

Cool. That dopey show was beneath her.

  • Nader

I hope Demi changes her mind and i can’t belive she’d say that.

  • Nader

I hope Demi changes her mind about leaving the show.

    • SWACFan

I do too, but I doubt it will happen. And I don’t like the new direction for the show — if it’s anything like the 2 episodes they did that were all sketches, I probably won’t continue to watch very often as I didn’t care for those episodes and the sketches. A few were cute, but most were not that entertaining. And Demi’s characters were the funniest part (along with the ‘Joe Jonas’ doll). I’m wondering what they are doing with Chad in the new format?

  • UGH

Hmph. I think this is a poor decision on her part. Her music career hasn’t exactly lit the world on fire (I actually dig “La La Land”), but I would think she would need the safety-net of her show to fall back on. Maybe it’s too much pressure? Having a recording career in this day and age can be very short-lived. Who really buys records anymore? I mean in the numbers that actually can be considered a career these days? She seems like a nice girl and I’d hate for her to fall into the Miley Cyrus-syndrome.

  • Kristen

Well this means Nancy McKeon’s out of a job.

  • Kevin

Does this mean Sonny With A Chance is getting canceled by Disney Channel?

  • Caiden

    get back on the show

  • Caiden

    she needs to stay

  • Rebecca

And it is because of her that the show is being cancelled and the other actors on the show now have to find another job.

    • JoMarch

Did you even read the article or is your reading comprehension below the national average? It didn’t say the show was being cancelled. It’s being “reworked”. More than likely everyone else will still have their jobs and maybe open the door for more people.

      • UGH

It sounds like it’s turning into “Amanda”.

      • Alicia

Did you read? It says it will bow out in June.

      • JimmyH

Alicia, actually it read, “It will feature guest stars, comedy sketches, musical performances and digital shorts and will bow in June.” That means it will start in June.

      • Kelly

The way it was worded, it sounds like “Sonny With a Chance” will be no more but Disney will turn “So Random” itself into a show to take SWaC’s place. The “new” show, “So Random”, will bow (meaning premiere, not bow out) in June. So we may or may not see the behind the scenes lives of the characters anymore, but most likely the absence of Sonny will be the only real change.

      • stuart

jo march, your tool-icluar tendencies are what mars an otherwise enviable stonewalling. Tool!

      • justme

It says it will bow in June, not bow out. That means the reworked show will start in June

    • Jeremy Sheer

its a skit show so no…..there lead just left like steve carrell on the office

  • melissa

Ughhhh dang it. That was my ultimate guilty pleasure show, and it won’t be the same without her.

    • lefty

She was my favorite part for sure! She usually played the straight man to her goofy costars.

    • Anya

Yeah the show won’t work without her in the format it was in. And are they at least gonna totally change the name of the show to So Random? Because it’s not exactly Sonny With a Chance if theres no Sonny.

  • Alicia

I doubt Demi actually decided to leave. Disney probably doesn’t want to continue the show when the lead actress is fresh out of rehab.

Their loss, as I’m sure she’ll find success elsewhere.

  • David

I wish Disney would reconsider and not cancel the show. My little granddaughter loves Zach and Sam and that black kid that dances so well.

    • Shea

wrong show. i think you’re thinking of shake it up.

  • Lucy

My goodness. Poor Demi. I had no idea how hard her life has been, and yet she still always has a smile on her face. I’m glad she got help, I hope she is much happier now. I support her decision to leave Sonny With a Chance if that’s what she wants, but I’m still sad about it. Demi, even through all this, I’m still your biggest fan. I love you. Stay strong. I wish everything could just be okay because you’re a beautiful girl and don’t deserve this. Good luck, Demi.

    • Franklin Price

Lucy, of course you had no idea about her life – you don’t know her; you’ve never met her; she’s an image you look at on your television. How do you know she doesn’t deserve this? She might abuse animals, shoplift, be a chronic liar, be a violent racist -YOU DO NOT KNOW HER!

      • JimmyH

A little harsh, don’t you think Franklin?
