Having done more than her share to keep the American Idol judging panel lively this season, Jennifer Lopez has set her sights on launching her own reality show.
Lopez is teaming with Idol producer Simon Fuller and his XIX Entertainment to shop a new project to broadcast networks. The series would have Lopez and her husband Marc Antony touring Latin America and searching for the best undiscovered musical talent. The working title: Que Viva.
Since the show is looking for a network home, the project is considered in early stages of development. Still, trying to launch her own competition show raises a question: Does Lopez plan to stay on Idol?
Lopez is only signed on through the end of this season. But given her strong performance on the show, and how Idol has managed to perform on par with last year in the ratings, it’s a very safe bet producers and Fox will want her back. (Fellow newcomer Steven Tyler is signed for more than one season and is expected to return). Plus, Fuller would never do anything to undermine his flagship franchise, so just because there’s another project in the works, it isn’t expected to be a conflict. After all, Idol judges have had other concurrent reality shows, such as Randy Jackson’s successful MTV project, America’s Best Dance Crew.
As for her Idol future, sources expect Lopez will sign up for another round given how much the Fox hit has raised her profile. And if she can spread some Idol-style fever to Latin America in the process, why not?

Let’s see, her new CD is bombing, her judging is very giddy and at times, goofy, she hasn’t had a box office success, so let’s put her in a reality show where she can continue to show us why she can’t get anything right!

It sounded good to me too because I think Jennifer is the best judge on the panel this year. (Yes–she’s even better than veteran Randy.) I don’t understand why AI would sign her up for only one year and sign Steven Tyler for more than one year. It should’ve been the other way around. I hope they get rid of Steven. He’s another Ellen Degeneres. They need someone who can give harsh criticism like Simon Cowell. Enough with all this cheerleading, AI. Hire some real judges. Otherwise have Randy, Jennifer and Steven hold up a scorecard after every performance like DWTS.
Best judge on the panel? LMAO, I should have stopped reading at that point because you’ve lost some credibility based on that opinion alone. But calling Steven the new Ellen? If anyone is, that’s Lopez.

why do we need a ethnic culture based talent show, why not just have the shows include everyone.
Because Latinos haven’t really done too well on Idol despite there being a huge market for them. Don’t worry, it’s probably going to be on a channel you don’t watch. What’s wrong with having a bit of diversity?

I think it is perfectly appropriate for one genre of music to have a realty show that focuses on that specific genre. American Idol is looking for a pop star – and that encompasses various styles, but there are specific, exclusive types of music. Why not?

They’re going around Latin America looking for talent. Technically, it’s not any different than going around the U.S. looking for talent, or the British talent shows that go around England, etc.
What’s so DIVERSE about a show where for the past 3 years the winners were 3 white male pop/rcok singers and the runners-up were also white?
So what? If they are voted in for the win, what difference does their color / ethnicity make? You only have a problem if the winner is white?
Actually, the show is NOT about ethnicity; it’s about geography. The show is about finding talent in Latin America, which has people of many different races and ethnicities. It is YOUR stereotype of Latin America that leads you to think that it would be limited.

Dang. You just knew once she ended up on AI we’d be stuck with her showing up on other shows. Someone with such average talent does not deserve their own show. And wow in that photo she looks like some sort of tranny
As much as the Spanish-speaking population of the U.S. has increased over the last few decades, I don’t see this show making it on a broadcast network. The reason Latino singers haven’t done well on Idol is that an overwhelming majority of voters don’t speak Spanish. This would only fly on Telemundo or Univision (and, no, that’s not a racist statement, just some reality).
This year’s Idol is the best season. All the judges are doing a great job. So what they aren’t jerks like Simon C. — they are actually doing what they should, which is to constructively critique and encourage. It was stupid to deliberately choose a top group of people to compete, only to tear them down every week. Steven, Jennifer and Randy are the best grouping Idol ever had.

JHo is so vain. Just looking at that picture makes me think of her practicing vamping in front of the mirror. Her career was one that did not deserve a resurrection.
