An Arizona gunman’s rampage that resulted in a U.S. congresswoman being shot has inspired a storyline in an upcoming episode of NBC’s Law & Order: LA.

The primetime drama started filming today an episode where a female state senator is gunned down in a public setting. The storyline echoes an incident last January when a gunman shot U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in head and killed a federal judge, among five other victims, at a public meet-and-greet outside a suburban Tucson grocery store.

Stories taken from real-life headlines have been a part of L&O’s brand for decades and a rep for L&O: LA emphasized that the show is fiction.

Tonight’s episode of LOLA is loosely based on another real-life crime tragedy — the murder of publicist and power player Ronni Chasen. In the LOLA version, the character is a Hollywood stylist and the show airs at 10 p.m.

Nothing has ever shocked me more than this story. I mean, the fact that they didn’t do this 3 weeks after the story happened is mind-blowing.

Exclusive? this was out last week!

  • missyb

This is one episode I will not watch.

  • M&Ms

    Pretty bad taste LOLA!

  • Marqariley

I agree that this is tasteless. I know L&O is all about “ripped from the headlines” but this is one case that shook up the entire nation and is still painful for all the victims and the families of the deceased. Just leave it alone (though of course they won’t)

They did a sniper episode very loosely inspired by the D.C./Beltway sniper in 2003. The real incident involved more deaths and a young child was also killed, similiar to Ariz, but I don not remember any press about that episode.

  • Dan

They are trying to pull out all the stops since they may not be around next season.

Hopefully pointless LOLA will get cancelled & Wolf can funnel that $$$
to CI & get D’onofrio & Erbe to stay longer.

    Real classy L&O:LA

Well, had the regular L&O been around (as it SHOULD HAVE BEEN), they’d have jumped on it weeks ago. Like it or not, a major story that the series does enjoy doing a spin on.

BTW, word is that Criminal Intent will be doing an episode on a murder at a mega-million dollar Boadway musical that’s turned into an injury-filled train wreck. Three guesses what that’s inspired by.

Oh please! They’ve been doing this for years. And some of the RL cases that they have tackled on the mother ship back when the show started are some of the biggest cases in New York History. Watch some of the earlier episodes. This is nothing new for procedural shows.

I hope the show plot puts the blame on the dirtbag republicans and Sarah Palin. The truly responsible for the tragedy.

  • Shelly

This is nothing new. Every story they do is based loosly on real life events. When those children were shot in the Newar school yard, they had an episode on the air within 90 days and never notified the family they were gooing to do that. This is what L&O is and whatever story they do is always going to be related to something in real life and they have always hidden behind the disclaimer that it is just fiction. A lot of time there are still trials and lawsuits going on when they air these. One of the crulest was when they aired that episode about the playground shooting, those families had lost three children with the fourth fighting for her life, and they killed off the remaining girl survivor on the epiode that aired.

Way too soon after the tragedy to milk it for ratings.

  • Michelle

@ will g alvira – I must say you are delusional- What facts do you have to support your claim that this tragic event is the fault of the Republicans and/or Sarah Palin. Why not hold the lunatic that did this responsible-.

    • will g alvira

Ok . Michele .I see you like defending the republicans, good for you . I hold the shooter responsible also . The entire world knows who’ s responsible. And I hold you responsible for the bad things republicans do since you love the sorry bastards so much . Have a good life being you.
