Showtime has renewed its lavish new period drama The Borgias for a second season.

The series, starring Jeremy Irons as a scheming pope, will return for 10 more episodes in the summer of 2012. “The Borgias has become Sunday night appointment viewing for a broad swath of our subscribers,” said Showtime president David Nevins. “Neil Jordan’s cleverly crafted tale of a 15th century papal family has proven quickly addictive. It’s a tribute to his incredible skills as an auteur and to the extraordinary cast led by Jeremy Irons that this show fits so seamlessly into our line-up of quality shows.”

Showtime points out that The Borgias has been pacing ahead of the final season of The Tudors in the ratings, averaging 1.1 million viewers per week. The pickup comes on the heels of HBO renewing their new costume drama last week, Game of Thrones.

how does one pronounce this show? is it Borges? Bore-jwa? Hmm??

    • Zee

      The Bor-jahs

      • Heath

In Italian it is pronounced Bor-jia. The last part is hard on the “g” and almost skips over the “i”.

      • Armando

And in Spanish (the Borgias were from Spain) is pronounced Bor- hi (as in hiccups) – ah.

Cesare is very steamy. My goodness at first I thought I would not like him but I love how intense he is! I think the sister is going to get more interesting at well. Getting a stable boy to loosen her husbands saddle? Good stuff.

I just got thru watching the 9 episodes of the 1st season and am quickly a fan and looking forward to the 2nd season. Not sure everyone understands that this is pure fiction. There is no Pope Alexander VI in the period 1492 and onward. However, there was an Anti-Pope from Spain which this strory is based upon but never recognized by the Church. The Real Pope was actually exiled to Northern Italy and also for a time in France due to the various wars occuring. The set for the serious which takes place in Rome just does not look at all what Rome actually would have looked like during that period – so that is a real default of the production that could have been much better. The casting is wonderful and I think that there will be more than simply 2 seasons of this continued story. Let the Saga continue!
