With a 90-minute performance show and only six contestants this week on American Idol, the show’s producers need to fill the time with something more than interview packages and awkward banter with Ryan Seacrest. Thankfully, EW has learned exclusively it will be with more singing: Idol contestants Casey Abrams, Lauren Alaina, James Durbin, Jacob Lusk, Scotty McCreery and Haley Reinhart will pair off and sing duets from the Carole King songbook on Wednesday night’s show.

For the last few weeks, the contestants have often sung duets together during the results shows, but this is the first time they’ve performed together during a Wednesday night “competition” show. In seasons 8 and 9, the Top 4 sang duets together on performance night.

I hope they mix it up a bit- don’t pair Scotty and Lauren AGAIN!

    • Stacey

Only problem is Scotty and Lauren are both country, and they blend in well with each other. I can’t see Scotty blending with anyone else. Except maybe Hayley, but still might be a tough sell. Lauren might do with someone else because her voice is more diverse. Maybe do a girl duet with her and Hayley. But since they only have two girls, they will want to a mixed sex duets if possible. So i see…

      Lauren/Scotty
Casey/Hayley (due to their mutual jazz vibe)
James/Jacob to show both out of the element…

      • Brigette

Those pairings sound great, Stacey. Actually, if those pairings are NOT what they do, I’ll be very nervous…And yeah, I’m sure they mean in addition to the individual prefromances.

      • Adwina Lambert

Brotha-Sistah Brown shugah fairy divah Jacob should just do a duet with herself ala victor/victoria like wat kurt did on Glee!! tee-hee!

      • cesar

        hi

    • Ktct

@Brigette: As I posted later in the thread, they can do their own thing in the solo performances, so why not mix it up a bit in the duets- show some range?

    • Adwina Lambert

Brotha-Sistah Brown shugah fairy divah Jacob should just do a duet with herself ala victor/victoria like wat kurt did on Glee!! tee-hee!!

  • John

Here’s a brilliant idea. How about 2 songs apiece. Geez.

    • Jason

Isn’t that how seasons 1-8 went? It was always a good show when they did it that way.

      • Stacey

Two songs a piece didn’t start until top 5 I believe. So if they are gong to restart it, it will happen next week… But I like the idea of duets.

    • Aunt Sassy

Or better yet why not make the show 1 hour long?

      • Elizabeth

        Winner winner chicken dinner!

  • ziggy

Hailey and Scotty should sing together; they could flirt up a storm! (and she can force him to improve his range)

    • Lyn

That’s a good idea. His actually was the best voice in the guy-group number last time, and when they pair him with Lauren, she always gets the best parts anyway.

    • Adwina Lambert

Brotha-Sistah Brown shugah fairy divah Jacob should just do a duet with herself ala victor/victoria like wat kurt did on Glee!! tee-hee

      • @Adwina Lambert

        STFU

      • DonneeDarko

        People hated Adam Lambert too…

  • RCB

Looking forward to a Casey-Haley duet.

    • Jez

Could make for some interesting chemistry since they’re dating.

      • Dan

        they’re not dating…

      • sarah d

        ew.

      • Um

        Actually….they ARE dating

    • Adwina Lambert

Brotha-Sistah Brown shugah fairy divah Jacob should just do a duet with herself ala victor/victoria like wat kurt did on Glee!! tee-hee!!!!

  • Jason

Will they be signed as a Duet act? If not, then I don’t get the point of this on performance night. Save this nonsense for the finale – since there has only been 1 decent duet since you started with that lameness. Cut the show down to an Hour at this point, and the results show should always be 30 minutes (does anyone even watch the first 30 min?). How many times are we going to have to sit through a terrible Rhianna performance? I love the show, but each seasons brings a new “wtf were they thinking” element. At this point, you might as well bring Marlie Matlin in as a regular Judge, and hire Taylor Swift as a vocal coach.

    • Jake

Geez. Who crapped in your soup?

  • Idol Fan

Let’s hope they don’t stick with the same pair ups we’ve seen in the prior two duet performances. I like Lauren all right, but her duets w/ Scotty have both nearly bored me to tears.

Personally, I’d love to see James help her out of her shell by performing with her.

    -Ken

    • Stacey

If not Scotty, yeah James seem to be the only other possibility for Lauren. It depends on how much they want to test James and test his fans, and they might pair him up with Jacob. It’s going to be interesting…

    • Jason

….help her by lowering the bar enough for her to sound amazing? Hey hey, ho ho, that howler monkey has got to go!

  • Gael

    yay! carole king!

  • Rob

How about write, “They will be singing duets IN ADDITION TO the solo performances.”? Just singing duets would not be enough to fill the 90 (why stretch it out to 90?)min.

That one little sentence would’ve made the article more complete.

    • Bor

      You are off the chain!!!

      • Jake

        Rob must be Jason’s roommate.

  • WTF?

This will be an interesting way of revealing how the producers want the rest of the season to unfold (as if they haven’t been obvious enough up to now!). I want to believe they will do something more unexpected than Scotty/Lauren, Hailey/Casey and Jacob/James duets, but this IS American Idol we’re talking about. They don’t do subtle.

    • Annia

It would be amazing if Jacob/James do a duet on a song by the great Albert King’s BORN UNDER A BAD SIGN. The funny thing is I think it’s James who is prabably ends up having more soul than Jacob. LOL.

      • Annia

        I meant PROBABLY.

  • MM

So…duets in addition to a solo performance? a little more information please!

As for Scotty being paired w/ someone else besides Lauren, I say go for it! Viva La Vida showed he has a much higher range than he let’s us see.Pairing him with another contestant would force him out of his comfort zone!

  • Em

I was wondering how they were going to fill the time.

I really don’t mind another Lauren/Scotty duet. Their voices go well together, likewise Casey and Haley. In the end, who else could harmonize well with Scotty’s voice? He has the odd voice out of the bunch.

If they want the contestants to do good performances (especially with Carole King), why mismatch them?

    • Ktct

Mix it up to show, if possible, that they can step out of their comfort zones. They each have a solo during which they can do the same, predictable format.

    • Petra

Haley has the versatility to sing with anyone. I just hope she isn’t stuck with Jacob.
She would do well with James, and it would be fun to see her paired with Scotty.

Jacob just doesn’t play well with others. His idea would be a Jacob recording so he could duet with himself.

      • Charlotte

        Lay off of jacob

    • Templar

I could see James and Scotty doing the Herman’s Hermits arrangement of “I’m Into Something Good”.

    • Annia

Scotty’s voice is similar to that of Randy Travis & Josh Turner. Does anyone know if Randy or Josh ever sing a duet with anyone? Scotty and Lauren singing NEED YOU NOW should be alright.

      • Templar

Randy Travis did an entire album of duets. Two of my favorites are “A Few Old Country Boys” with George Jones and “I Told You So” with Carrie Underwood.

  • Anya

Doesn’t Haley seem a bit awkward (like the outsider)in that photo? Everyone’s leaning towards Lauren. They should’ve had the girls in 2 chairs with the guys around them.

    • EvilEdit

I see you got the message…

    • CBlossom

I think they photoshopped her in! And no, TPTB are not subtle!

    • Eddy

I agree:: It is clear that she is not very welcome into the rest of the group for some reason..

  • karen

I’d love to hear James and Haley do something together. I just have a weird feeling that it might work.
God help whoever ends up with jacob

    • eyeovine

Jacob and Haley’s voices could actually work very well together.

    • HappyDays

Jacob, Naima, Haley were together for Las Vegas Beatles week.

    • MamaKow

Haley could easily stand her ground with James. She has a very “rocker chick” side that not many have seen!

    • Don’t Hate

You must be caucasian, because you are really hating on Jacob. He can REALLY sing! I rather hear him anyday than to her Haley’s awful yodle!

  • bunny

Casey would be tough to duet with. His duet with Haley went well because it was jazzy but if it’s not another jazzy number it could be tough to duet with Casey.

  • DH

How about cutting the show back to 60 minutes?

    • MH

How about cutting the show back to 6 minutes (1-minute for each contestant, no commericals).
