Meredith Vieira leaving 'Today': Report

According to a Hollywood Reporter report, Today co-host Meredith Vieira is leaving the morning talk show in June, almost three months before her contract expires. (NBC is not commenting on the report; Vieira’s reps have not returned EW’s requests for comment. The report says an official announcement will come “as early as next week.”) Vieira replaced Katie Couric as Today host back in 2006, and helped the show continue its reign as TV’s top-rated morning program.

(This news comes the same week that Couric announced she would be stepping down from CBS Evening News, the gig she left Today for.) A departure, however, is not entirely unexpected — Vieira was rumored to be considering a leave earlier this month.

As for Vieira’s reported replacement? Current Today newsreader Ann Curry, with correspondent Natalie Morales filling Curry’s current shoes. Vieira, who still hosts Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, is supposedly leaving Today for largely personal reasons. (Her husband, Richard Cohen, suffers from multiple sclerosis.)

She seems like a wonderful, classy lady. I have enjoyed watching her over the years. I wish her all the best!

  • gataroo

I really hope she stays. She really has chemistry with Matt and Al and I can’t stand the other morning shows.

  • JessinPortland

    Please let this be true.

    • nancy

      I know what you mean

    • Caren

      Can she leave tomorrow….

    • Nia

I liked Meredith on The View, but she is terrible on the TODAY show. Her and Katie should switch places.

      • me

“her and Katie” and you should switch places with an English teacher.

  • Zach

TV is changing so much this year. Oprah–>OWN. Regis leaving Live. Mary Hart leaving ET which Nancy O’Dell joined. Katie Couric leaving the news, and Meredith and maybe leaving Today. Charlie Sheen self-imploding.

    • Zach

Meant to say Meredith and maybe Matt Lauer.

  • Zach

I hope Ann is the one to replace her. I love Ann, and having her there doesn’t mean someone else big couldn’t also join the show too, though Natalie Morales is fine.

  • Hannah

If Ann Curry replaces her I will NOT watch the Today show anymore. To bad because I like Matt and think Natalie would be the better one.

    • Zach

Eww, what is wrong with you? Racist.

      • JessinPortland

No, it’s fair. Thing is, Ann is fantastic at delivering the news but an awful interviewer.

      • Sally

I agree. I have watched the show since Jane Pauley but as much as I love Ann I can’t stand her interviewing style

      • JessinPortland

Any time things start getting emotional it gets painful for me. I can’t explain it because I LOVE her for the news!

      • andi

I agree completely. I love her presenting the news, but hate her interview style – especially when dealing with tragedies.

      • jr

Wow Zach! So, u think cuz some ppl don’t like Curry they must be racist? What does that say about you? JessinPortland and andi are right. Ann is good @ the news but a horrible horrible interviewer. Natalie is so much better. NBC tho won’t promote Natalie over Ann. Unfortunate cuz I’ll stop watch too.

    • deedee

I agree; cannot stand Ann Curry

    • RJM

Agreed. She is not right for a morning show anchor. Completely static, says ridiculous things.

  • LOL

These morning shows are a waste of time. Can’t imagine why anyone would watch any of them.

  • bill

Are we done with the long term tenure anchors at the morning and evening shows? There seems to be lots of turnover on all networks.

  • commentor

I like Ann; she’s a fellow Duck and Oregonian and a nice lady. But, I think she’s kind of milquetoast.

  • Beauty

Too bad, she’s the only one I like on the show. Ann is so fake, she needs to go!

  • E

I respect that Meredith has always put family first and yet has done really well. I think The View has suffered without her. She provided stability to the craziness. One Today she’s been ok, though I don’t know if I’ll really miss her. I really believe it is Matt that makes that show popular.

  • tracy

I have watched the Today show for ten years, and can honestly say that if Ann takes over I will stop watching. She is a good reporter and seems to be a lovely person, but I’m always bothered by her style of being so deeply emotional with all of her interviews. She seems more like she’s trying to be a counselor than an interviewer.

    • James

Agreed. She is a terrible interviewer. She is too emotional and gets too excited. I think she’s fine in her role, but as the co-anchor, I think she’ll be terrible over a long period of time. I will have to-evaluate continuing to watch the Today Show if she’s the co-anchor. Plus, when Matt leaves, someone else with Ann may be unwatchable.

  • Jordan

I will Miss Meredith A LOT. Meredith was THE BEST FEMALE CO-ANCHOR in Today Show History and is and will be one the Best Morning Show Anchor EVER in Morning Show History!! The Today Show will not be the same without Meredith, I don’t think I will keep watching .whenIf she leaves. Good Luck Meredith. You will be very much missed.

  • Heather

Why is no one mentioning the obvious — bring back Katie!

    • googliezoo

I was thinking the exact same thing. Meredith is ok, but I haven’t watched Today regularly since Katie left.

  • JJ

I can’t see either Morales or Curry stepping up and replacing Viera. Remember when they added Norville, Couric and Viera they didn’t just internally promote they sought out a replacement. Curry is too wooden and awkward for the lighter fare. Morales is probably the stronger of the two but I think they need someone who can go from cooking segments to Syria. I’m going to put my money on Maria Shriver! She has a past relationship with NBC and can get back in the game now that she’s not the 1st Lady of California.
