'The Voice' repeats strong, overlaps with 'Idol'

More good news for NBC:* Even its repeat of The Voice performed strong. Wednesday night’s two-hour encore of Tuesday’s Voice premiere delivered a rating that was actually the network’s highest number in that time period in a month.

The Voice picked up another 6 million viewers — half its debut audience — and had a 2.1 rating in the adult demo. The show would have posted a 2.3 rating, because that’s what it had in three of its half-hours, but the program’s first half hour — and this is where it gets interesting — overlapped with American Idol. That part was only a 1.7. While Idol gained during each of its half hours, including the part that overlapped with The Voice.

Now, since The Voice was a repeat, we can’t read too much into this, but it’s probably fair to say these two definitely have some audience overlap. Next month, these two will go head-to-head and we’ll hopefully see some ratings fireworks.

Meanwhile, Idol (21.7 million viewers, 6.9 preliminary adults 18-49 rating) was roughly on par, while Breaking In (7.6 million, 2.6) gained slightly to rank as the night’s highest-rated comedy.

CBS’ Survivor (10.9 million, 3.0) hit a series low, followed by repeats. ABC’s comedy block had Better with You (4.8 million, 1.5) and Cougar Town (5.6 million, 2.1) down to season lows, but look at this: Happy Endings (5.2 million, 2.1) jumped 17 percent to match its lead in — a good sign.

The ratings spike was probably the fact that it did not compete with Glee on Wednesday night.

    • Jethro

Come on, we have to agree the concept of The Voice is innovative and interesting. When the 4 coaches/judges begin to work with their 8 is when the show will get interesting. This by far allows us to really experience the true “voice”, AI is the same every year and needs to change it up somehow. Many viewers will agree, AI is losing viewers. I am eagerly awaiting the next phase of The Voice, I will give it a chance, whereas, I stopped watching AI on Wednesdays and wait until Thursdy, at 8:56 pm to see who goes home on AI.

Much better than Idol. & christina is more talented than J-Low.

  • Jerome

    The Voice sucks.

    • Just sayin’

      And American Idol doesn’t?

    • Marie

      Is that you, Ken Tucker?

    • Larry

Were you one of the singers who got eliminated? If so, keep at it.

  • Joe

The Voice is much much better than American Idol and the coaches are fun!

    • Ally

      I totally agree.

    • maiv

Yes! The coaches are really fun and have good chemistry!

  • JBD

Breaking In is not that good…

  • Hedda Lettuce

Please, Steven Tyler is more entertaining than those four coaches combined!

    • Joe

True, but at the same time those 4 judges are in competition with each other which makes it instantly more entertaining.

    • stu

But then Randy is the worst host out of the whole lot.

    • Larry

You’re basing this on just one episode? Yes, Steven in entertaining but he is no more entertaining than the coaches. their chemistry is fun. I don’t get that same sense of fun on AI.

    • TonyT

Steven Tyler is entertaining, but he drifts into “dirty old man” territory way to often.

  • davey

Survivor was at a series low :(

  • Z.

Why not mention how well Happy Endings did, especially for ABC at 10:00?

  • tisha figuroa

my daughter is 10 years old she initiates Justin Beeber when she sings. she plays the guitar while she sings . i would like for you all to hear her .

    • glenn

I hope your daughter can spell better than you.

      • Jethro

Come on Glenn, keep it clean, but agree with you!

      • Sherlock Holmes

        Glenn

she spelled “initiates” perfectly, and come on now Beiber is tough to spell…

Now if you really think she meant imitates him. Then spelling isn’t really her issue, it’s vocabulary.

        I’m just saying

    • Dave

She initiates Justin Bieber? What does that even mean?

      • Jenny

She clearle meant “imitates”, which doesn’t disprove glenn’s theory about Tisha’s spelling.

  • grandpajoe

I like the Voice much better than Idol can see myself watching all the time. Quality of Talent on Voice appears to be better

  • Kevin

I like the judges on The Voice better than the IDOL judges and Carson Daly is way much better than Ryan Seacrest.

    • Zoro

Ditto. Ryan is annoying and fake. Carson keeps it real and knows what good music is.

  • ST

Watched The Voice last night (missed it on Tuesday night) and it was okay. Not bad, not great but I will probably watch it again. I know this is the first stage of the competition so I might like it better when the judges start working more with their picks.

    • Larry

Coaches. Not judges. And the coaches are also in competition.

  • darrinsgoodman

steven tyler is enough to keep me on board for “idol”!

  • Fabe

Yay for Happy Endings! I hope it gets renewed for another season!

  • LISA G TAKES SHTS AT WORK!

someone poke a hole in X-tina to let all the air out. she is BLOATED…..

    • Baba booie

Yeah I thought the same thing, but if you look at the previews for later shows it seems she loses weight through the show. So maybe she saw herself on TV and did something about it.

  • Brie

I want to like this show, but it’s hard when people keep overrating it. I’m annoyed by the hype. It’s good, but it’s not THAT good. I like the concept, but it really is not even close to American Idol in terms of production. It’s closer to America’s Got Talent.
