ABC cancels 'All My Children' and 'One Life to Live,' replaces soaps with lifestyle shows

In a crushing blow to the daytime-soap genre, ABC announced today that it will yank All My Children and One Life to Life and replace them with two lifestyle shows. AMC will end in September, followed by OLTL in January 2012, to make way for shows dubbed The Chew and The Revolution. In an announcement, ABC says, “These new shows expand ABC Daytime’s focus to include more programming that is informative and authentic and centers on transformation, food, and lifestyle — cornerstones of programming that resonates with daytime viewers as evidenced by the success of The View.”

“While we are excited about our new shows and the shift in our business, I can’t help but recognize how bittersweet the change is,” said ABC Daytime president Brian Frons in a statement. “We are taking this bold step to expand our business because viewers are looking for different types of programming these days. They are telling us there is room for informative, authentic, and fun shows that are relatable, offer a wide variety of opinions, and focus on ‘real life’ takeaways. A perfect example of this is The View, and that factored into our decision. The Chew and The Revolution are in the same vein and will be great additions to the lineup, with The View serving as an ideal foundation from which to launch these programs. They will also provide enormous opportunity for the creation of ancillary businesses and growth.”

The actors on both soaps were told less than 20 minutes before the announcement went wide to the press this morning. (Frons addressed the AMC folks in person on the West Coast, while the New York-based OLTL was videolinked.) General Hospital, the third most-watched sudser in daytime, will not be affected by the changes. Two new comedies faced off Wednesday night as ABC’s Happy Endings premiered and Fox aired the second episode of Christian Slater’s Breaking In.

Happy (7.3 million viewers, 2.7 preliminary adults 18-49 rating) pulled a decent number in at 9:30 p.m. but was down 27 percent from the premiere of Mr. Sunshine in the slot earlier this year and fell 29 percent from its Modern Family lead-in (9.5 million, 3.8). ABC ran a second episode of Happy at 10 p.m. (5.7 million, 2.3). READ FULL STORY »

Doris Roberts on 'The Middle', 'Grey's Anatomy' and 'Hot in Cleveland' (oh my!) -- EXCLUSIVE

Burning question for the broadcast networks: Why doesn’t Doris Roberts have her own sitcom? The 81-year-old co-star from Everybody Loves Raymond has no less than three appearances scheduled over the next month on ABC and TVLand.

The actress told EW exclusively that she’ll return to ABC’s The Middle – which stars her Raymond pal Patricia Heaton –to reprise her role as Brick’s teacher on May 25. “Patty and I go head to head once again,” Roberts said. “I still think I’m right about her kid and she still thinks I’m evil and mean.” Roberts will also play a patient in the April 28 episode of Grey’s Anatomy. “It is a serious problem for me. I can’t say much more than that. You will have to see it to believe it. The language I use in it is pretty wild.  It is a character who is very different from myself.”

After that, she’ll show up in one of the final episodes of Hot In Cleveland. “That’s a wild one. I get punched by Betty White,” she said. “A real pow punch and I go flying. I play a woman who had an affair with her husband in the past and she is angry.”

Good call, Doris — saving the best for last. (Reporting by Carrie Bell)

HBO confident 'Game of Thrones' will get second season: 'We're not nervous' -- EXCLUSIVE

game-of-thrones

HBO’s lavish fantasy epic Game of Thrones may be the biggest TV gamble in years, but even before the drama premieres Sunday night, odds are favorable that HBO will renew the show. Showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss have been told to start thinking about storylines for next season, while HBO series chief Sue Naegle tells EW network executives feel optimistic that the series will get another round.

“We’re not nervous about it,” she says. “We’re all hopeful for a second season. We’re all feeling confident creatively.”

The bullishness isn’t just about predicting healthy ratings (though success on that front isn’t entirely unlikely either). Subscription-based HBO, Showtime and Starz focus on delivering exclusive and premium content that you can’t find anywhere else rather than mammoth Nielsens. That’s why procedural cop-doctor-laywer dramas (which draw big numbers for broadcasters) are rare on the pay networks — they’re not considered unique enough. READ FULL STORY »

'Walking Dead' billboard causes controversy: Poor taste? -- PHOTO

A billboard promoting AMC’s zombie hit The Walking Dead has sparked a controversy in the UK after an advertising company posted the display on the side of a funeral home. 'DWTS': Voting for your fave pro (and why it's not always such a bad idea)

gXfJDu

Anyone who considers themselves a real fan of Dancing With the Stars should have been disappointed to see Wendy Williams leave the competition — not because she was a decent dancer, but because it meant Tony Dovolani lost another chance at winning the mirror ball trophy. At least he’s not alone. Other fan favorites like Maksim Chmerkovkiy, Edyta Sliwinska, Anna Trebunskaya and Lacey Schwimmer have yet to join the winner’s circle during the show’s 10-year history — though the Ukrainian hoofer might have a chance to finally prevail this spring (as long he and partner Kirstie Alley avoid any more mishaps).

So would it be wrong for viewers to cast their votes based solely on the pros? READ FULL STORY »

'Criminal Minds' news: A.J. Cook in talks to return

It’s true, A.J. Cook is in talks to return to Criminal Minds as a series regular.

The former Minds co-star left the show at the start of this season after her character was transferred to a job at the Pentagon, but is now in discussions to rejoin the show for next fall.

Minds is also on the verge of getting a new mastermind: Sources confirm longtime showrunner Ed Bernero is exiting the CBS crime drama. All told, quite a shakeup on a solidly performing series.

Here's when 'Real Housewives of New Jersey' returns

Bravo has set a premiere date for arguably the most popular edition of its Real Housewives franchise. The third season of the New Jersey edition will debut on Monday, May 16 at 9 p.m., with an extended 90-minute premiere episode.

The scheduling comes on the heels of Bravo canceling a Housewives for the first time, axing the D.C. edition. The network also revealed dates for new reality shows Million Dollar Decorators (May 31) and Rocco’s Dinner Party (June 15). Here’s a sneak peak trailer for RHONJ season 3 (but, fair warning, if you’re unlucky in the Bravo video player sponsor-message roulette, you might first have to watch a rather awful ad for Poise adult diapers).
