'Being Human': Sam Witwer on tonight's 'brave' finale

Being Human closes out its freshman season tonight on Syfy, and if Sam Witwer’s (pictured, right) warnings are true, it stands to change a big part of what fans have come to know about the show during its 13-episode season. And considering the various predicaments in which we last left our trio of other beings (Aidan was dying, Josh was on his way to being a were-daddy, and Sally’s door is open) there’s no telling where this is headed.

In a chat with EW, Witwer talks about the show’s future as it preps for a second season and addresses how the cast dealt with the inevitable comparisons to the British series this season.

Those of you hoping for a little Regis with your coffee after he leaves Live! with Regis & Kelly might be out of luck — for now, anyway. Reports this morning claimed that Philbin, who announced his retirement in January, was shopping around a daytime syndicated talk show, in which he would star.

Philbin said during his initial announcement that his last show would air toward the end of summer or at the beginning of fall. No replacement has been named.

Katie Couric book tour brings her back to 'Today'

Categories: Television, TV Biz

Katie Couric is heavily promoting her new book, The Best Advice I Ever Got: Lessons from Extraordinary Lives, with appearances scheduled tomorrow for CBS’s The Early Show and The View. But no serious book-selling campaign is complete without a stop at the Today Show, and according to her spokesman, Matthew Hiltzik, Couric will visit her old show on Wednesday morning. Count on plenty of questions about Couric’s future, as she’s reportedly considering her own daytime talk show that may or may not include Matt Lauer.

CBS above par on Sunday (but that's good); 'Secret Millionaire' goes bankrupt on ABC

A kick in the pants from its Masters coverage and swell performances by Undercover Boss and CSI: Miami gave CBS its fifth consecutive win on Sunday in viewers (13.1 million) and adults 18-49 (2.3 rating/8 share), according to early nationals. Show starts were a little off, so the combination of The Amazing Race and Boss earned a 3.0/8 and 10.4 million, while Boss and Miami posted a 3.2/8 and 10.2 million. Each 18-49 ratings point equals 1.3 million.

Fox was second in the demo and featured another winning performance by Family Guy (3.3/9, 6.6 million). Dang, it’s good to be Seth MacFarlane. NBC came in third with America’s Next Great Restaurant posting a 1.2/3 – down 20 percent versus last week  — and averaging 3.4 million, followed by Celebrity Apprentice, which earning a 2.9/7 — down 6 percent — and 8 million.

ABC finished fourth in the key demo, with the season finale of Secret Millionaire averaging a  2.3/7 — a season low. Ouch. It lured 9.1 million. Brothers & Sisters only earned a 1.8/5 and 6.5 million. Think the Walker clan will be back for another season?

Katie Couric and Matt Lauer in talks to reunite: report

Categories: TV Biz

Katie Couric is planning her post-CBS News career, and it might involve a familiar face. The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal both are reporting that there have been discussions to reunite Couric with her Today Show co-host, Matt Lauer, on a new daytime talk show. Couric is currently negotiating her exit from the CBS Evening News, which she has hosted since 2006. Lauer’s NBC contract runs until the end of 2012, so a reunion might prove difficult, though there’s been speculation that he intends to leave Today. “There have been a lot of rumors and speculation circulating through the press, and we’d prefer not to comment on any of it,” NBC says in a statement. “Matt Lauer is under contract with NBC News for a long time.”

However, the duo’s old Today producer, former NBC top executive Jeff Zucker, is reportedly advising Couric on her future plans. Representatives for CBS, as well as Couric and Lauer, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Backstage at the Comedy Awards: Eddie Murphy on 'wrong turns' like 'Pluto Nash'; Louis C.K. on his 'sh--y' night

Hey Rob Corddry, what do you think about having comedians honor comedians?

“They should do that! I think that’s a great idea,” the former Daily Show correspondent told EW at the Comedy Awards. “Just get a bunch of comedians together in black tie.” Okay, somebody’s either being really snarky or hasn’t been paying attention, since Comedy Central’s first annual awards were just that — with Corddry himself picking up the Golden Microphone for Best Sketch Comedy/Alternative Comedy Series (Childrens’ Hospital).

EW caught up with a number of the winners and presenters backstage at New York City’s Hammerstein Ballroom, and, needless to say, others were more direct regarding how they felt about the evening. Like Louis C.K., who elaborated on his acceptance speech for Best Stand-Up Special (Louis C.K.: Hilarious), in which he declared the gala to be “the s—-iest night of my life.” “You know, I’m just exaggerating,” C.K. clarified. “But, yeah, pretty s—-y.” READ FULL STORY »

The Comedy Awards: Jon Stewart talks 'vestigial' ceremony, Anne Hathaway and James Franco's Oscar-hosting gig

What happens when you fill a ballroom with comedians in black tie? The Comedy Awards, of course! Comedy Central’s first annual celebration of funny people by funny people rolls out tonight across the Viacom-verse, simulcast at 9 p.m. EST on Comedy Central, Spike TV, CMT, TV Land, and VH1.

Considering how little awards recognition comedy gets — you can count on one hand the number of (non-musical) comedies that have won the Oscar for Best Picture — it’s exciting to see comic artists honored by their peers. And lest you think this is some meaningless, self-congratulatory, People’s Choice-style ceremony, check out some of the names on the board that determined the nominees: Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg, Seth MacFarlane, Conan O’Brien, Don Rickles, Joan Rivers, Chris Rock, and Ray Romano.

To get you psyched for the show, EW talked to Jon Stewart on the red carpet about what these awards mean to comedians and, well, if he thinks they’re even necessary. READ FULL STORY »

UPDATED: TV Survival Scorecard: Which shows will return (and which won't)

Categories: Television, TV Biz

survival-scorecardImage Credit: Lewis Jacobs/NBC; Fred Norris/The CW; Sonja Flemming/CBSIt’s early for The Voice but those great premiere ratings have us feeling optimistic that the Mark Burnett singing show deserves a spot in the Strong Odds column. We’re also feeling pretty good about a One Tree Hill renewal, — but no so for Mad Love. And we’re privately hoping for a cancellation of The Defenders so Jerry O’Connell can be free to replace Charlie Sheen on Two and A Half Men. Crazy, we know — but it was an awesome rumor in Hollywood this week.

Anyway, see our updated rundown below:

'Being Human' creator Toby Whithouse on the shocking finale -- EXCLUSIVE

Being Human U.K. fans figured Aidan Turner’s bloodsucker Mitchell wasn’t long for the show the second Peter Jackson cast the actor in The Hobbit. But did they also assume he wasn’t long for the world? Perhaps… primarily because the majority of this current season centered on a prophecy that Mitchell (who murdered 20 people on a Bristol train) would be slain by a werewolf — the knowledge of which sent him spiraling from a determined hero to paranoid lunatic. Not even the love of a good woman — or ghost, i.e. Lenora Crichlow’s Annie — could save him. (If you haven’t seen the final episode, it’s probably best to stop reading now. Spoilers ahead!)
