'Vampire Diaries' returns, with countdown to Klaus: Scoop!

The Vampire Diaries returns tonight after a six-week hiatus, and, as exec producer Julie Plec will tell you, from here on in, it’s all about the countdown to the arrival of Klaus (Joseph Morgan), pictured here in the April 21 episode in a flashback with Katherine (Nina Dobrev). We know that Plec and EP Kevin Williamson looked at hundreds of actors for the pivotal role of the world’s oldest, baddest bloodsucker who wants to sacrifice Elena, so what did they see in Morgan? “He has a depth and an intelligence as an actor, but he’s also got this great wicked grin and these dimples that make him seem both fun and naughty at the same time, even as he’s being evil or very stern,” Plec says. “So there’s a playfulness about him that Kevin and I really liked because we didn’t want Klaus to be a one-note bad guy. The more layers that we can bring to the character, the more successful the character’s gonna be, and Joseph seems to have the ability to do all that.” (Plec says he’s also read all the L.J. Smith books upon which the series is based, and has not only done his research on Klaus, but also the vampire canon and lore in general.)

Here are a few more immediate teases/spoilers. For those hoping the fire at the Grill would mean we’d get a new eatery set on the show, sorry. “It was just a little fire mishap. The Grill is still around and kicking,” Plec says. “My joke is that I want to open a Mystic Pizza, but that, as of right now, is a future plan.” READ FULL STORY »

Fox renews 'Bob's Burgers' for second season

Fox has renewed animated series Bob’s Burgers for a second season, sources say.

The midseason comedy by 20th Century Fox has been a bit on the bubble for a renewal given that its numbers haven’t quite been as strong as Fox’s other Sunday night mainstays like Family Guy and The Simpsons.

But given that the other Sunday “Animation Domination” shows are already renewed — and Fox has a few other ‘toon projects in the works like its Napoleon Dynamite animated series — renewing Burgers potentially means that Fox will expand its animated block beyond Sunday nights next season.

'The X Factor' to open high-def studios across the country for live auditions

Fox has additional changes to its upcoming American edition of The X Factor. Beginning Friday, April 8, the reality show will open high-definition recording studios for hopefuls at MyStudios locations across the country, the network announced in a press release. In these select locations, X Factor hopefuls can record and submit video auditions for a chance to win a spot on the show. All interested persons 12 and older, including both groups and solo artists, are eligible to use the studios. “These studios were brought to my attention some months ago, and we think they are brilliant way to audition for those people who haven’t been able to make it to the cities,” creator Simon Cowell said in a statement. Christian Slater's 'Breaking In' opens strong after 'Idol'

Could the third time be the charm for Christian Slater? The actor’s latest TV series effort Breaking In just delivered a strong premiere rating on Fox last night.

Wednesday’s debut delivered 9.9 million viewers and a 3.5 preliminary adults 18-49 rating. Of course, that’s down considerably, as is standard, from Idol (22.5 million, 7.1). But it’s Fox’s highest-rated live action sitcom telecast in three years — beating this season’s post-Idol airings of Raising Hope and Traffic Light.

Also notable last night: ABC’s Mr. Sunshine (4.6 million, 1.6) rose 14 percent this week, thanks to Idol ending a half-hour early. The finale ratings for Off the Map (3.8 million, 1.3) pretty much assured it won’t be back next season. CBS’ Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior (9 million, 2.1) dropped 9 percent to a new low.

Ever since Bones creator Hart Hanson announced that he would be using the April 21 episode called “The Finder” to introduce a character, Walter Sherman, who could potentially front a new series on Fox come fall, fans have been wanting to know more about him. Fortunately, Geoff Stults, the Happy Town and October Road vet who was cast as the man who can unearth anyone and anything, is finally talking. In the episode, Booth (David Boreanaz) and Brennan (Emily Deschanel) travel to Florida to solve the murder of a maritime museum security guard, and once there, Booth suggests they call on Walter to help locate a stolen treasure map.

We’ll learn that years ago, Walter, a former military policeman, tracked Seeley down after he went AWOL when he wasn’t granted leave to see the birth of his son, Parker. “Booth has always been resentful of that because I arrested him, and he’s always wanted to get me back,” Stults says, “but he’s also known that I’m really good at finding things.” Booth tells Brennan that Walter has “finder power,” which Walter proves to Brennan by finding something that’s important to her. “And then, I kind of fall in love with her. And then she has a minute of like, ‘Wait, do I like him?’ — just enough, I’m sure, that the Bones fans are gonna be like, Nooo waaay. I saw it one time on Twitter already. I was like let me shoot the f—in’ thing first. Relax, guys,” Stults laughs. “Don’t kill me. I’m just tryin’ to get a pilot picked up here.”

After hearing more about Walter Sherman, we think we’re gonna like him. Here’s what we’ve uncovered:  READ FULL STORY »

'Justified' exec producer Graham Yost talks [spoiler], family feud, and building toward 'Bloody Harlan'

After watching this week’s episode of FX’s Justified, fans know two things: First, Boyd can clog. We promised Walton Goggins we would make sure everyone knows that really was him. “I didn’t get winded for nothin’,” he joked with us recently, adding that he probably did about five takes of his jig at Mags’ whoop-dee-doo. (That shindig, by the way, featured a working moonshine still courtesy of the show’s prop department, though we hear they only managed to produce a few drops.) And secondly, things are going to get real interesting in Harlan now that the threat level in the Bennett-Givens feud has once again risen to red. If you haven’t seen the episode, stop reading now. Exec producer Graham Yost fielded our questions about the show’s latest casualty in episode 9, what happens next, and where we’re headed as we approach the May 4 season 2 finale, titled “Bloody Harlan.”  READ FULL STORY »

Matt Lauer to leave 'Today'?

Where in the world is Matt Lauer going at the end of next year? Perhaps off Today. In the wake of a report that co-host Meredith Viera is planning to leave NBC’s morning show when her contract ends in September, Entertainment Tonight is reporting that the more tenured host, Lauer, 53, has informed executives at the network that he intends to leave Today when his contract expires in Dec., 2012. Today released this statement on Wednesday: “There seems to be an awful lot of speculation around news anchors these days, and it’s not our practice to comment on any of it. Matt Lauer has a long term contract with NBC News and Today.” (Lauer has co-anchored the show since 1997 and the statement appears to leave some wiggle room on whether he will stay on past the end of his current agreement.) It’s certainly been an unusually busy week for news anchors and personalities: Fox News and Glenn Beck announced that his daily show Glenn Beck will “transition off” the network, while Katie Couric is believed to be departing CBS Evening News, possibly to host a daytime talk show.

Christina Ricci does 'CSI' -- not! Here's the real story.

Christina Ricci doing CSI!

Sounds too good to be true, right?

That’s because it is. Despite a breathless internet report that says The Addams Family star will appear in the penultimate episode, it turns out the CBS crime drama never approached Ricci about playing a young woman who helps the Las Vegas team with the Nate Haskell investigation.

But the role does exist — and it will be played by Elisabeth Harnois (Miami Medical, Dirt). She’ll debut in the May 5 episode dubbed “Cello and Goodbye” and will play the estranged daughter of Conrad Ecklie (Marc Vann). Her character works for the Los Angeles Police Department.

Harnois is expected to return in the fall for more episodes. But sadly, not with Ricci.

'30 Rock': Talk of demise premature

Categories: 30 Rock, Television, TV Biz

Alec Baldwin may run the fictional NBC on 30 Rock, but he does not, it seems, get to unilaterally declare the show’s future — or lack thereof — in real life. His assertion that the comedy would end after next season, as reported by Vulture, is premature, according to multiple sources involved in the production. “Our contracts are expired [in 2012], and Tina is gonna have a big career directing films and writing,” Baldwin told the blog. “She’s going to be the next Elaine May. She’ll be great.” We agree that Fey is great, but the sources tell EW there have been no discussions yet about the show’s fate beyond next year.

April 26 is going to be the Gleekiest night on television when Glee goes super-sized for a special 90-minute episode that “pays homage to Mother Monster herself, Lady Gaga” by performing “Born This Way,” Fox announced today via press release. (Not mentioned by Fox: How the network, no doubt, hopes the super-sized episode will totally upstage the premiere of The Voice on NBC).

New Directions will only perform Gaga’s just-released single, a source tells EW. But Gaga will still be felt throughout the episode as it is “more about her message.” Translation: heavy issue, right ahead! Just peek at what Fox issued today:  READ FULL STORY »

Channing Tatum and director/producer talk new documentary 'Earth Made of Glass'

For the globally conscious among us who want to want to see Hotel Rwanda (how long has it been sitting in your Netflix queue?), Earth Made of Glass, exec produced by Channing Tatum, offers an emotionally engaging, informative view of post-genocide Rwanda that spares you from anything too hard to stomach. The idea of the film is not to replay the horror of the Rwandan genocide, but to find a blueprint for peace and ending cycles of violence in conflict areas. Tatum saw producing the movie as an opportunity to educate himself as well as younger viewers. “I knew of the genocide, but I didn’t know anything about it,” he told EW. “I just want to help this story get out there. My audience skews younger, and I think kids can really learn from it.”  READ FULL STORY »
