NBC promises Steve Carell's final 'Office' episode will be 'perfect'

Categories: Television, The Office

NBC is setting the bar pretty high for Steve Carell’s final episode of The Office. In their latest promo, the network promises that Michael Scott’s last day in Scranton will be nothing short of “perfect.” The spot is light on laughs and heavy on tinkly piano music — though the opening image of Michael wearing cowboy boots and sitting on his office building’s roof in order to prepare for life in Colorado is pretty funny. Hopefully, that means Carell’s last day will be chuckle-inducing as well as justifiably sentimental. The supersized episode airs Thursday at 9 p.m. EST. Check out the promo after the jump. NBC’s high-profile attempt to cash in on the singing craze was a success on Tuesday. Airing against stiff competition (a two-hour Dancing With the Stars! A special 90-minute episode of Glee!), The Voice was the No. 1 show of the night in the all-important 18-49 demographic.

The two-hour show pulled a 5.1 rating/13 share in the demo and 11.8 million viewers, according to early estimates. NBC says that it was the top-rated series premiere on a major network since Undercover Boss debuted following the Super Bowl on Feb. 7, 2010. Each 18-49 ratings point equals 1.3 million. Tonight the Peacock launches The Voice, its potential rival to American Idol, with a star-stuffed “coach” panel and a concept that puts a literal twist on a hugely popular reality format. The show represents NBC’s last best chance to exit the season with one new ratings winner.

But can Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Blake Shelton and Adam Levine deliver the goods against a super-sized Glee and Dancing With the Stars?

“This is really unknown territory,” says one industry insider when asked an opinion about the ratings. READ FULL STORY »

The CW just announced early renewals of five shows for next season. Ready?

Gossip Girl, Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries and 90210 are all coming back, along with a first-ever all-star edition of America’s Next Top Model.

All will return next fall. None are huge surprises — Vampire Diaries is the network’s biggest hit, Gossip and 90210 are solid-ish and Friday’s Supernatural has helped keep the network strong on TV’s toughest night. Doing an all-star edition of veteran Top Model also makes sense as a way to potentially boost its numbers after 16 cycles. As for the shows that were not renewed… READ FULL STORY »

'American Idol' Top 6 to duet on Carole King night -- EXCLUSIVE

With a 90-minute performance show and only six contestants this week on American Idol, the show’s producers need to fill the time with something more than interview packages and awkward banter with Ryan Seacrest. Thankfully, EW has learned exclusively it will be with more singing: Idol contestants Casey Abrams, Lauren Alaina, James Durbin, Jacob Lusk, Scotty McCreery and Haley Reinhart will pair off and sing duets from the Carole King songbook on Wednesday night’s show.

For the last few weeks, the contestants have often sung duets together during the results shows, but this is the first time they’ve performed together during a Wednesday night “competition” show. In seasons 8 and 9, the Top 4 sang duets together on performance night.

Katie Couric finally makes it official: She's leaving

Katie Couric finally went on the record to People today to announce her decision to step down from CBS Evening News.  ”I’m really proud of the talented team on the CBS Evening News and the award-winning work we’ve been able to do in the past five years in addition to the reporting I’ve done for 60 Minutes and CBS Sunday Morning,” she told the magazine. “In making the decision to move on, I know the Evening News will be in great hands, but I am excited about the future.”

As for what’s next, Couric said, ”I am looking at a format that will allow me to engage in more multi-dimensional storytelling.” Couric, who anchored the Evening News since 2006, is expected to focus on developing a daytime talk show that may or may not involve Today’s Matt Lauer. Both the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal reported earlier this month that there have been discussions to reunite her with her former co-worker and friend.

CBS will likely announce Couric’s successor next week, or before its annual upfront presentation to advertisers in New York. It seems likely that 60 Minutes correspondent Scott Pelley is the frontrunner, though CBS’s Harry Smith and Russ Mitchell have also been mentioned as possible successors.

In response, CBS News released this statement: “There is a lot to be proud of during her time at Evening News. CBS News, like Katie herself, is looking forward to the next chapter.”

TBS just picked up a new Tyler Perry comedy series — and announced that another will end its run.

After five successful years on the network, Perry’s groundbreaking cable sitcom House of Payne is concluding after 222 episodes. To help replace the show, TBS has picked up a new Perry comedy, For Better or Worse, based on Perry’s Why Did I Get Married films.

“Even though it will be sad to say goodbye to House of Payne, I’m really looking forward to exploring new territory with For Better or Worse,” Perry said in a statement. “Working on House of Payne taught me a lot about what it takes to make a successful television series and I’m looking forward to applying that experience to For Better or Worse.” READ FULL STORY »
