CNN tops cable news network coverage of Osama bin Laden's death

cnn-osama-dead

Sunday night’s stunning and historic announcement that Osama bin Laden was killed in a U.S. military operation boosted CNN to outperform rivals.

CNN emerged as the most-watched cable news network, peaking at 7.8 million viewers during the 11 p.m. hour when President Obama officially announced bin Laden’s death. Fox News delivered 4.8 million and MSNBC had 2.3 million. That means about 15 million tuned in to the cable news networks for the announcement, with millions more watching on the broadcast networks (whose final numbers will not be available until tomorrow) and online.

During a five-hour block of continuous coverage of the news, from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m., CNN averaged 4.1 million viewers to 2.8 million for Fox News and 1.6 million for MSNBC. This marked CNN’s best performance in these hours since Election Night 2008.

Thank goodness Bin Laden is swimming with the fishes. He’s probably going to poison the ocean.

Those numbers only PARTIALLY show that vast majority of people who don’t watch TV news, but when they DO tune in they don’t go to Fox for answers. I bet half of Fox’s viewers watch for the guaranteed circus show.

no Iraq is going to get us. you think times are hard now ? wait its go be another 9/11

The problem I had with CNN was that the crowds were building outside and while they kept referencing them—they did nothing to send someone out and start asking people on the street what they thought about the news. It got really old really fast hearing the same rhetoric again and again.

This really proves a lot about CNNs standing with general public, as opposed to Fox’s more ‘specialized demographic’. Fox’s audience is very hardcore and I guess just must love to complain and hear complaints about the current administration. Whereas CNN is still a tried and tested brand for general newsgoers, as evidenced by this historic event that brought viewers attention back to the TV, to witness a fantastic connecting moment for all Americans.

I watched CNN to start, went to NBC, and then switched over to Fox News because I just had to see how they were reporting it. Very odd. No hot blondes!!! There were 2 unattractive women reporting. I was very disappointed!

Don’t Believe the hype till they show US a body!

  • Lori

CNN also was the first to report, at 3:12 am et that bin Laden was buried at sea … Fox had the news about 3:28 am. But isn’t the most shocking news that bin Laden used his own wife as a human shield? What can Muslim extremists make of that? They’re (jihadists) actually treating this guy as a martyr? Cowards as martrys, good. Now we know everything we need to know about these people.

    • Truth_Prevails

How do you know? Were you there to evidence it?

      • cali

uh i dont think so shorty

    • Lori

@Truth Prevails: do you mean, how do I know ObL used his wife as a shield? Brennan from Homeland Security gave a briefing … said the woman who was killed was bin Laden’s human shield, and that she was in fact his wife… If this isn’t what you mean, I don’t know what you mean.

    • josh

im sorry idiot that fox reporteded it 16 minutes late.

  • Mercy

All our dreams hv become a reality,we really thank God for that.

  • sarah

I personally dont believe that Osama is dead. Why would they dump his body into the water right after they killed him it just doesnt make sense to me.

    • judas

if you put it in a ground, people treat it like a shrine

    • Michael

I am guessing Sarah is her village’s idiot.

    • silkynickel

His body was buried at sea first and foremost because the US treated his body as his religion says is fit which is to bury the body within 24 hours after they die, and they buried him at sea because they did not want the site of his grave to become a site for extremists

    • Cat

      Sarah = Donald Trump

  • di

guess the haters have a new cause

  • markski

OBL may not have been killed, this seems a bit too much of a publicity stunt – was he even alive?
And why did they not take him alive- or did he know too much about 9/11 – like how the WTC was planted with explosives by the US?
Methinks this is all a big lie….like Emanuel Goldstein. No body to even prove it? The whole thing look like a CIA con job…

    • Michael

I was wrong, markski is her village’s idiot.

      • silkynickel

THANK YOU!!! I was about to say the same thing.

    • josh

marski idiot he was a real person and he really is dead!!!!

    • Jay

hahahahah….. how did you get out of that looney bin?
The 9/11 “conspiracy theory” has been debunked several times over. If you really believe that there were explosives in the WTC, there must be something wrong with you

  • josh

    right on michal

  • josh

Marski really has something wrong with him

  • tomm

What is unbelievable is that Hard Right Inc. is not trashing Obama for once. Only anonymous cowards online.

  • josh

    Marski’s gay

  • josh

screw obama he has done absoulotley nothing in office and he is in office because he’s black

    • ZapIt

Maybe if you show Fox News your comments, @josh, they’ll hire you for color commentary; and then you can move out of your Mother’s basement.

  • josh

    oh your cool niga zaplt

  • Michael

Ok he dead can we get back to helping our heros ( The Middle Class)
