As expected, Scott Pelley will replace Katie Couric as anchor of the CBS Evening News. The 60 Minutes reporter will assume the post on June 6 and the nightly broadcast will be renamed CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley. He will also serve as the broadcast’s executive producer.

“Scott has it all. He has the experience, the credibility and he is among the very best reporters ever to work at CBS News,” said CBS News Chairman Jeff Fager in a statement. “In more than two decades at CBS News, he has distinguished himself at every level, right up to his current role at 60 Minutes, where his work has been incomparable. We like to think of CBS News as the ‘reporter’s network,’ and I can’t think of anybody in this business better suited for the anchor chair than Scott.”

Pelley has covered breaking national news stories, politics, and wars for CBS and served as the network’s chief White House correspondent. He joined 60 Minutes in 2004.

Couric ended months of speculation on April 26 by announcing her decision to step down from the broadcast after serving as its anchor since 2006. She is expected to focus on developing a daytime talk show that may or may not involve Today’s Matt Lauer.

Love the content on this page but add photos please

Wonderful…. I will be tuning into CBS more often – Katie just wasn’t getting it – although those “zingers” and loaded questions she asked Klondike Barbie was a winner!

      • jellymon

That was OVER two years ago….What have you done lately for me CBS News??

      • something is wrong

who watches the news anyway? Old men who need flomax and viagra – fail

  • wsugar

    I will now watch.

    • Jen

Just thought the same thing!! He would be my favorite of the 3 broadcast networks.

  • Lary Crews

Thank goodness. That means NBC will continue to rule.

    • Jackie

Brian Williams will always be my favorite newsman.

  • Entertainment2u-Twitter

they will never get out of 3rd place. should have picked Anderson Cooper for the ladies. ha

    • Han Shot First

Anderson Cooper for the ladies? Really?

      • xxc

haha thats what i was thinking. anderson cooper for the drags maybe…

    • Carol

You can’t have Anderson. I’m too busy watching him on CNN.

  • Dean

Great choice. He does an excellent job on 60 Minutes. I typically watch the other two broadcasts ahead of CBS, but I will be tuning in more often with Pelley at the desk.

    • Me

Yup…he’s great on 60 Minutes so why not here?

  • Who?

Never heard of him. Probably because he’s not a 48 Hours correspondent.

  • Jim S

I’ve always found him a bit smug and above it all on 60 Minutes. Hope he tempers it here.

    • Another Lisa

Totally agree. Maybe he will be too busy in his new post to be on 60 Min.

  • Ben

Hooray. CBS wised up and hired a journalist to anchor their evening news instead another morning talk show host(ess). I will go back to watching the CBS Evening News after staying away the past few years, because I felt Ms. Couric was just not as qualified as Brian Williams, Diana Sawyer, or Judy Woodruff to report the news.

    • dave

I’ve never understood this line of thinking. What qualifications do you need to sit at a desk and read a teleprompter?

      • MikeHunt

        LOL

  • Iakovos

I love this choice. Harry Smith is a CBS favorite, too. It is not so much the anchor for me but the stable of reporters and the content of the broadcast. If CBS could only win another 30 minutes from its affils for a solid comprehensive newshour a la cable, then we would have a real winner.

  • Barack Palin

This is good. I’ll bet Scott Pelley never dressed as Marilyn Monroe or Marie Antoinette or flew into the studio dressed as Peter Pan.

  • Swerds

Who? The picture sparks a vague memory, but if CBS is going to reinvigorate the Evening News they need someone with both a Marquee name and the talent to keep bringing people back after the curiosity wears off.

    • Dean

Your attitude is everything that’s wrong with news viewers today. Wanting style over substance. Flash over real reporting. Why hire a genuine newsman when we can just put a genuine celebrity behind the desk! That experiment failed with Couric.

  • DTR

A liberal replaces another liberal, wow.

Look for the ratings decline to continue.

    • Michael O’Boail – Chicago

Get a life and listen to one of the 4,000 Republican radio stations or Faux.

      • Blue

        Relax chief

      • DTR

You’d think someone at CBS could learn something from one of the few media organizations that’s not going down the toilet.

Guess they’d all rather lose their jobs than air a conservative viewpoint now and then. Pretty stupid, but that’s journalism these days.

  • Jeanne

So they went with an old white man. What shock, except not.

    • Ram

Right, because that’s what matters: his age and the color of his skin, not his talent and ability. Your racist, sexist comment makes me sick.

  • MMJ

Scott is fine, but why not Russ Mitchell! He anchors on the weekend. He’d be great all the time.

    • Han Shot First

As evident by this picture, Russ’ forehead wasn’t large enough to complete with Scott’s overwhelming bobblehead stuffed full of newsy knowledge.

  • Joan

I will now go back to watch CBS, at least for a while. Haven’t watched a single episode since Ms. Couric went behind the desk!!!!

    • Michael O’Boail – Chicago

I won’t watch CBS, now. I came back when Couric took over. At least she doesn’t act like she is about to cry when reading the news (Sawyer on ABC) UGH
