Emily Deschanel on her pregnancy being worked into 'Bones': 'I think it's unlikely, but only time will tell'

Ever since Emily Deschanel's pregnancy was announced in March, Bones fans have been wondering how her fall due date will affect the show. Now that the Fox drama has finally received a season 7 pickup, that's something producers are in the process of deciding -- both in terms of story and production schedule. "I imagine that you're gonna see Brennan behind a microscope a lot next season. I think there's gonna be a lot of close-ups of Brennan. I said I'd work though my hiatus, but we didn't have a pick up until now, and they have to write before we shoot. It's a whole situation," Deschanel tells EW, with a laugh. "They have to see how long it takes them to write episodes. I think we'll have our normal schedule starting in July or something, but I don't know. We just had an email about that [yesterday]

. Like, ‘We don’t know… but these are possibilities.”

The bigger question for viewers, of course, is whether Brennan will become pregnant as well. “I don’t know. I feel like that would change things so much,” she says. “I am not gonna say no — never say never, I guess — but I think it’s unlikely. But only time will tell … How to address [my pregnancy] is a hard thing. I threw them a curveball personally, but you know, that’s life.” Indeed, show creator Hart Hanson has said that while sitting at Deschanel’s September 2010 wedding reception, he thought to himself, “Oh boy, I know what comes next.” “Not always in that order,” Deschanel jokes, “but yes, we didn’t waste much time.”

Having filmed the May 19 season finale in a bowling alley (Booth and Brennan go undercover in a league to solve a murder), we had to ask if the heightened sense of smell that comes along with pregnancy has been an issue on set. “I do have a line about all the different smells that you can detect in a bowling alley. You could do a whole forensic study with the carpet itself. It’s kind of always an issue, but I haven’t vomited yet, so that’s a plus. I consider that a success.” She had a bad sense of smell to begin with, she adds, so now it’s probably only normal. “It’s probably worse coming to work when they’re painting. That was bad. First trimester, I came to work and I was like, ‘You guys need to clear this out!’, and no one understood why I was freaking out so much.”

I’m so excited for her. I just had my baby. It was amazing and an incredible experience. I never thought I was very maternal but I’ve gone from being not being bothered about being a mum to being quite keen to have a second baby. For me, the baby idea came from meeting the right man. I mean, it was the surprise of a lifetime. And now he’s here and he’s giggling and smiling. It’s an incredible thing. It was a dream come true in many ways.

It’s such hard work getting pregnant these days. All that work laying on your back all night long. I need a vacation.

      • Jerri

Wow. I hope you don’t breed.

I feel like the show could go either way here (baby or no baby) but I think the won’t write it in. Angela already did it.

Brennan has already explored the idea of wanting a baby. I feel it would be perfectly natural for the character to explore being pegnant to the max, having watched Angela and thought about a child herself. So Brennan would have a fake pregnancy while Emily has the real one. All in the name of science.

I would much rather see her adopting a baby from another country. They could write her out as being there to adopt.

I would much rather see her adopting a baby from America.

Thank you Eva! I was beginning to think I was the only one who felt that way!

I was curious about her reactions to all those “dead and smelly” things she has to work around. I know that those are not actual remains, but the products they use must be really smelly and nasty.
Didn’t anyone suspected she was pregnant when she started to act like that?

I don’t believe that Brennan will get pregnant , at least not this season (7th), unless that happens in the very end.
I want Brennan to have a baby with Booth, but I don’t believe they’re ready for that just yet. It doesn’t make much sense (in my head) to get her pregnant just beacuse Emily is pregnant.

They actually wrote her pregnancy into the show. I never thought they would. I don’t know how that will change the new season. Brennan’s job, her relationship with Booth. I can’t wait for season 7!!! xD

I noticed last night that they included a comment from Booth about how Brennan will get all excited about Angela’s baby and want one of her own. Hedging their bets, I guess? Hard to see a B-B baby adding anything good to the show — but certainly wouldn’t be as bad as the decision to let “Out of Sight’s” Mary McCormack be pregnant on that show. She’s the last person who’d actually want a baby!

I agree that Brennan and Booth are not ready for a baby, they’re just starting to be ready for a relationship. I hope we see big lab coats and folders, and more of the same sweet re-bonding that has begun.

I thinkk it would be great to write the baby in,what happens to the baby in shows? they seem to dissapear. I t would creat an entire new story line for them.

  • cac

It would be a mistakes for another baby story to be on the show,as a fan I WAS hoping she didn’t even go to the bowling alley.

  • Hollie

I think that if brennan and booth DO spend the night together this thursday, the baby might be a result of that (IF they decide to write it in).

  • Herbie

Pregnancy happens. get over it with Hollywood pregnancies.

I feel that there are two thoughts on this subject of no baby- yes baby and both have merit. The “Bones” show is not a flashy caricature of life and so a child may be a good thing and also remember, the show will be in it’s 7th season. On the other hand, a BABY means reality in a big dose. Both of the main charactors are quite reserved and at times, very humorless. The best scenes tend to happen in the bar where they are all packing in the drinks and of course, that would have to stop with the mother to be. They actually show a more real side of themselves when they are in that bar. AGAIN, This cannot happen with a baby on the way. Myself, I really don’t care what they do, because it is a sure thing that they are going to mess with what ever relationship that B and B finally have. When the show is finally dropped, then the fans will get 7-8 minutes of an ambigueous get together. This show so follows “Jag” and remember that “HOLLYWOOD does not have any understanding of a real, committed relationship.

I don’t think she should have a baby on the show. She works too much, would not be fair for her to have a baby. If they write her pregnancy into the show, it should be in that she is a surrogate or something like that. Or that she is pregnant in the show but maybe suffers a miscarriage.
I just don’t think it would be good karma for the show if Bones haves a baby. She won’t be as focused on her job – and her job is what the show is about.
For a relationship with Booth – I just don’t know. Part of me is all for it, part of me says no – don’t because then where does the show “go”
