The Oprah Winfrey Network announced today that Peter Liguori has been named interim Chief Executive Officer of the network, replacing Christina Norman, who helped to launch the cabler in January. Liguori will oversee the struggling network while continuing to serve as chief operating officer for Discovery Communications.
The shakeup comes at a time when the fledging cabler is struggling to find an audience. Since its launch, the network has only averaged 283,000 viewers in prime time. Not suprisingly, one of the most watched shows on OWN is Oprah Behind the Scenes, which lures 382,000 viewers.
The network has more original programming rolling out in the next year, including the October debut of Rosie O’Donnell’s new talk show Rosie and the launch of Oprah’s Next Chapter in 2012.
Before joining Discovery in 2009, Liguori was the president of entertainment for Fox.

Then O should not have been so quick to dismiss soaps as an option. If they ran AMC/OLTL during the day, with heavy advertising for her new primetime schedule it would draw in viewers who now don’t currently watch her network. Or heck, just run soaps at night.
I second that!
Completely agree.
I said that the second I heard that they canceled the ABC soaps. Even with their dwindling viewership, they have higher ratings than anything currently on the OWN network. Plus, she could syndicate those shows to the affiliates and make a TON of money. ABC would totally have egg on their face if she did that. She needs to remember, her show was/is only popular because of strong soap lead-ins. Seriously, what other programming does that network offer? I can only be lectured to so much during a day…she needs to have some entertainment between all those ‘light-bulb moments’.
You go away. If you don’t like Oprah then don’t watch her. You don’t have to wish her malice. You must be a miserable excuse of a human being. There are plenty of us out there that love Oprah.
DD- does reading comprehension completely ESCAPE you? My comment was not remotely a slam towards Oprah. It was an observation that she should grab those cancelled soaps and their ratings for her flailing network. And to you point… I don’t watch Oprah’s network – few are. And that is exactly her problem.
@DD one more thing.. I just LOVE how people who express an opinion opposite yours are “miserable human being[s].” Intolerant, much?
Oprah only popular because soap leadins? That’s absurd, Oprah’s ratings are several times that of the soaps. Also Oprah first became a smash hit in the morning when soaps were not on
The problem with the soaps is not so much the ratings, but how expensive they are to produce with their huge casts, writers, & number of episodes. You could spend that much money on a TV show in the 20th century when the audience was huge, but today the audience is divided between hundreds of cable channels and the internet, & fewer women are home.
From a young age I reebmemr scrubbing my knees trying to get the marks off because I thought they were dirty. Little did I know real people don’t look like that
Glad that her network is bombing. Enough of Oprah, her “reigning over the rest of us like we’re her peons”. Would love her to just…go…away.
Then don’t watch!
newsflash: we’re not watching. That’s her problem. And if she would like to entice us to watch… she needs to change her game plan. Not being a hater…it’s called being a viewer/consumer of the Oprah product (or not, as in this case).
The above response was meant for you “jrs”. You are a hater.
HATER
Oprah will move her show over to OWN. She can’t announce it until her syndicated show ends but I would be shocked if it doesn’t happen.
I wish they would put the shows in HD.
I wish they would not show reruns of Dr Phil from 2008 so dated.
Dear Oprah, I’m truly sorry to hear that OWN is struggling. While you have new shows coming on for next season, I’m sure that not every show can be a hit. ROSIE will do well, as may a few other shows . You should definitely reconsider taking in AMC & OLTL. You will be guaranteed a large audience by their followers. Who knows , these followers (fans) may even tune in to more of the programs you offer on OWN . I don’t know if you ever read my e- mail from last week , so here is the most important piece of it. You remember the books Conversations with God ? We re- create ourselves every moment of every day . This is Gods’ gift to us. You have the power, along with millions of fans to re- create the soaps AMC & OLTL and bring them to your home – OWN. If certain mega stars will not take a cut in pay, they have the option to leave . There are numerous actors on these soaps that are just as talented if not more so, and I’m sure they would be willing to take a cut in pay if it meant keeping their jobs. I truly believe that YOU can do this. Imagine all the jobs you’ll be RE- CREATING. Imagine the loyal fans you will have. Time slots are abundant. You can move shows around as you see fit. I love Susan Lucci, but if she left the show b/c of differences regarding her salary, iwould wish her all the best, but continue to watch the soap. That’s just an example. There are certain stars who make a lot of money& they earned it. But as I said before,, the tars of these soaps have a choice. There’s alot of talent in AMC & OLTL. Please help them & their fans to RE- CREATE ther working lives & bring them home to OWN. You have that power!!! I will continue to pray for you. God bless you, Oprah !
OWN will have some type of “Oprah Winfrey Show” even if it has to be called something else for legal reasons (unless Oprah owns the right to her show, which I don’t believe she does). There is no way that OWN or the financial backer, Discovery Networks, can afford AMC and OLTL. Apparently ABC is looking for $200 million to sell the rights to the shows and no way Discovery will shell that kind of money out.
I personally am up to HERE with Oprah and her “aha moments” along with all the other recycled ideas and phrases. The Oprah ego is astounding. Please go away for a few years already.
I hope he will shape the network up. For me, what’s good is great (Oprah BTS, Lisa Ling America, The Judds) but there are too many repeats and too many similar shows. Also, there should be more movies that inspire (Shine, The Notebook, The Blind Side, Pay It Forward etc.). It would be nice to have one film every day.Maybe a block of syndicated classics that fit OWN’s mold would be good too (Touched By an Angel, Designing Women,Life Goes On, Good Times etc.)It might even be fun to air the previous 25 years of Oprah episodes somewhere on the schedule.
don’t they already call that the Lifetime Channel for Women?
I watched her station and I didn’t like it. Her old show had dysfunctional people, but OWN takes it to a new level. The Judds? They are screwed up and not very intelligent. Chaz Bono? She/He needs a good shrink, not an operation.
Other stations show dysfunctional people, but Oprah tries to make them seem normal. No thanks!
Please stick to your plan and don’t take on the soaps. It is not worth it.
I don’t get why people are so upset. Starting a new network takes time. You need to build a viewer base and that won’t happen overnight. I’m sure they will eventually have some good content that people will gravitate too. Look how long it took other cable channels to have a hit show or find its niche. Give it time.
why on earth would oprah hire that imbecile rosie o’donnell…she is the most hateful ignorant stupid person to ever be on tv….o should get Katie Couric to host a talk show like the old Larry King Live show….KC would be great in a forum like that.
i love gayle king…but her time slot keeps changing…we need her scheduled in the late afternoon…
Good gracious…. the only person more nauseating than Oprah to watch with her “Tom CRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUISE”…. “Tcikets to Disneylannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd” vomit is Rosie O’Cow who is one the most ignorant and pretentious morons on the planet. Count me out! I’ll push needles into my brain thru my eyeballs before I subject my self to that dumbing down.
One success doesn’t automatically beget another. We just saw Paul Reiser experience a show that failed to catch on. Bob Newhart’s last sitcom “George and Leo” was a ratings loser and lasted just 22 weeks. Oprah’s success, as great as it has been, “is no guarantee of future performance,” a line I just stole from an investment company ad.

I stopped watching Oprah when she slobbered all over Obama. How can Oprah, who has gotten rich from Capitalism, be so snug with a president who attacks the rich and promotes redistribution of wealth? It makes no sense to me.
