Fox picks up 'Bones' spin-off 'The Finder,' J.J. Abrams 'Alcatraz' to series

UPDATED: Fox just picked up two dramas to series: The Finder, a spin-off of its hit drama Bones starring Geoff Stults, and Alcatraz, the J.J. Abrams mystery featuring Lost co-star Jorge Garcia.

Finder has Stults as a former military policeman whose brain damage from two tours in Iraq have given him the ability to locate anything or anyone. The 13-episode order comes despite the fact that ratings for the backdoor pilot episode of Bones featuring Stults (and costars Saffron Burrows and Michael Clarke Duncan) were down 9 percent from the previous week’s episode.

The Alcatraz pilot had soft industry buzz after its screenings, but Abrams’ pedigree  (and some of that Lost magic?) probably helped it snag a spot on the Fox schedule.

Here are some of the higher profile projects we are hearing that are not expected to be on Fox’s schedule next season:

Locke & Key, the promising supernatural thriller based on Joe Hill’s comic book, Bellevue (which sounded a bit like a psychiatric version of House) and Ethan Hawke’s global CIA action drama Exit Strategy. None have been confirmed dead by the network, as they could be retooled for a later release or picked up by another outlet. But they’re not expected to show up on Fox this fall.

Also not mentioned above: Kiefer Sutherland’s drama Touch, about a man who’s autistic son can predict the future. This show is expected to make it, but its pilot doesn’t shoot until June and so it hasn’t been officially picked up.

The network will unveil its fall schedule Monday in New York City.

please recast the saffron burrows part. did not like her. otherwise, worth checking out

    • Alice

I agree. You know the writing is terrible when Saffron Burrows can’t pull it off.

      • Fido

they don’t need to recast, just have her drop the accent.

      • Anonymous10

I agree Fido. I like her but the accent is terrible. It sounds so false. She needs to drop the accent. Either way I’m still not tuning in. Lie to me, Human Target, The Chicago Code, shows that I’ve come to love, are not returning, they’re being axed. Why should I invest in something new. I’m barely keeping up these nights with the shows I already watch. I can’t even watch Desperate Housewives and Game of Thrones’ last episode yet as I’m so busy. Why would I want to invest in a new show when I can hardly keep up with the ones I already love? I’m not watching The Finder or any new ones, especially on Fox after they just dropped three of my favs?

    • Katie

I could not agree more! Either recast or change the horrible accent. She made what could have been a pretty good episode almost impossible to watch.

    • Jen Jen

Can we all agree that a one episode storyline does not make it a spin-off. Now if Angela and Hodgins were to go off and do their own show – that would be a spin-off.

Chucking a random self-contained trio into a popular show and then claiming spin-off status is just annoying.

The accent felt forced and the “Burn Notice” homage was downright embarrassing.

Fox stupidly throws The Chicago Code and Lie to Me out but OKs a Burn Notice rip-off. SMRT.

      • Patricia

My thoughts EXACTLY. It’s not a spin-off. Call it what it is- a new show.

      • Nicole

I totally agree!! “The Finder” was like, the worst episode of bones over, and I am so upset that Lie to Me is gone, the only other show I loved besides bones =(

    • Maria

Thank you!!! My thoughts exactly. Her performance is horrible! I vote for recasting.

      • Carol

I am also upset that Lie to Me is gone. If they ever take Bones off the air I will realy be upset…

  • sam

I hated this show. I won’t be watching.

  • michelle

    really with that picture?

    • Eurydice

Yes, sadly enough. I was so bored during this episode that I only thought, “huh, naked guy.”

  • Mike

    Alcatraz! Awesome news.

    • Kate

      like!

      • Laura

        Yay Hurley!

    • Dave

So happy Alcatraz was picked up! It’s one of the few shows I’ve heard about that I was really rooting for.

  • Vago

I rather enjoyed The Finder but MDC needs meatier lines and the girl’s gotta go…or just have her speak sans accent. It’s got potential and I’ll stick around to see how it evolves.

  • My son is also named Bort

Get rid of Burrows & her female version of Bert from Mary Poppins voice, what happened? It wasn’t that annoying on Boston Legal.

    • Barry

      She IS British.

      • Alice

That’s not her accent though. She’s trying to use a kind of London accent that she is not pulling off well. Catherine Tate does it better.

      • Mia

She should use her own accent. Americans will not distinguish what part of the UK she comes from. Or was that Austrailian accent she was trying? Any way, she should ditch it and use her own accent.

  • ToxicMunkee

Ditch the girl on The Finder. I couldn’t stand her. Too abrasive and negative next to a crazy guy who doesn’t take much of anything seriously.

  • skylark66

Real classy, the Finder sitting on the pot talking to the heroine. Hope they grow up this character. ugh

  • Lily

Gross! I hated that episode. I definitely WON’T watch Finder.

  • ggny

tone down the girl and change her character a bit, give MCD a meater part and make Danny Trejo a regular and i think The Finder could be very good

  • Jiji Moran

It’s a good thing for Fox, trying new waters. But, let’s wager… how many episodes before it is canceled?

    • Pippi

I’ll give them 5 episodes before being cancelled.

  • noeladd

Didn’t particularly like the Finder episode of Bones but I’m willing to give the series another chance. I’m really looking forward to Alcatraz though, I want Jorge back on my tv!

  • DS

I knew within 6 minutes of watching this episode of Bones that the Finder was going to spin off. All 3 characters are perfect. There is some contrast which I like. Not sure why some people say they did not like Saffron. I can’t wait for this to come out

    • pattijean

you’re right. It was immediately obvious that this episode of bones (which wasn’t really a bones episode) was an introduction to a NEW show. no spin-off here. a good example of a spin-off is private practice. grey’s anatomy moved one of it’s main characters to a different show, while still having contact back and forth between the characters of both shows. I wasn’t impressed with the finder at all.

  • Dwayne

Good to hear The Finder got picked up! I think it is definitely a unique show…let’s see how long Fox decides to let it grow tho!

  • Molly

    JORGE GARCIA IS BACK! YES!
