Fox orders Zooey Deschanel's 'The New Girl,' Jaime Pressly's 'Teenage Daughter' to series

In the first official pickup for the fall 2011-12 TV season, on Tuesday Fox snagged the pilot for The New Girl, a comedy about sexual politics starring Zooey Deschanel and up-and-coming comic actor Jake M. Johnson. The show was created by Liz Meriwether (screenwriter of last January’s No Strings Attached) and produced by 20th Century Fox Television.

UPDATE: Fox has also ordered I Hate My Teenage Daughter to series, starring Jaime Pressly and Katie Finneran as two women who were tormented by mean girls when they were younger, from the makers of The New Adventures of Old Christine.

Fox is in the middle of a flurry of activity tonight in prep for upfronts, canceling Human Target and Breaking In, while ordering dramas The Finder and Alcatraz.

I don’t recognize her in that picture. Did they get the right one?

    • Liz

Maybe they accidentally grabbed a picture of Katy Perry — that comparison never dies apparently.

I can see it now…in the fall I’ll read comments of “wait, since when did Katy Perry start acting?”

    • Cygnus

Zooey is a doll. One of the cutest actresses in Hollywood.

      • John

I’d like to move to Utah and marry both Katy and Zooey.

      • Garry

I thought Emily was gorgeous (still do) until I saw Zooey. She has the most gorgeous eyes I’ve ever seen.

  • ks

    I know-whos is this?

  • Roncon

I like the names of the people involved.

    • tom

rocco the pet monkey and a dart board

  • lana

I’m not a fan of Zooey Dechanel. Personal opinion is that she’s just a block of wood. Pass.

    • GLR

Why can’t all blocks of wood look like her?

    • Gepetto

      She gives me a pinocchio.
      I’d pinocchio her.
      etc.
      etc…

      • Don

Mayb she wants 2 play pinochio. She sits on my face and I tell lies!

    • @Lana

Your head must be a block of wood, Lana.

    • Solange

Agreed. I don’t like her as an actress.I like her sister Emily much better. All of Zooey’s movies, she has the same expressions in her face and voice. Pass!

  • Mary Brady

Glad to see I’m not alone!

  • Tha Phoenix

I always wait to see the trailer before I judge a pilot.

    • Joe

Why don’t you wait to see the actual pilot before judging the pilot?

I think what is really imntroapt to understand is that the characters selected are not being portrayed as being because of their physical traits (although that plays in to it). The reason they are viewed as being unattractive, especially in the case of Liz Lemon or Rachel Berry, is that they are strong, ambitious women who know what they want from their career and don’t make allowances for what is considered conventional beauty to attract men (and when they do, these scenarios blow up in their faces because they don’t suit their characters). In movies and television for decades, any woman who has been portrayed as being smart, talented, ambitious, confident or slightly unusual is always the ugly girl , regardless of whether or not the person who is playing the role actually is. And it’s a bit ridiculous to say that someone is finally acknowledging this issue of unbelievable standards, because it has been a topic if hot discussion for a long time. The problem is that unfortunately, sex sells, and if people who were really considered to be unattractive played these roles, no one would be watching.Remember to watch shows television critically and remind yourself that these are actresses who have an entire arsenal of people to make them look amazing, and also that the reason these are considered ugly characters has little to do with the physical appearance, and more to do with the characterization.

  • My son is also named Bort

That’s not fair Iana & Mary Brady she could also play a log, a tree stump, some lumber…

  • Anth

Six comments already and not ONE of them is gushing over the amazing adorableness of Zooey Deschanel? What’s wrong with the world?

    • charmer1

I like her since “500 Days Of Summer”.

      • Joan

Was that the ridiculously pretentious indie film in which she broke the heart of that other “actor” from Third Rock from the Sun?

      • Captain

Joan you are so right. That movie was incredibly pretentious. When I watched it, all I could think was ‘oh no, Garden State 2.0′ (although I love Natalie Portman).

      • mary q contrary

It kind of seems like you guys are labeling those films as ‘similar’ with no real reason to do so. Just because something has a lot of buzz, a good soundtrack and some neat gimmicks doesn’t mean it’s crap. And I love seeing the word actor in quotations in reference to Levitt, who is apparently not a real performer? Have you seen any of his indie work? I would most certainly call him an ACTOR, no quotations needed. Shall we call you a “troll”, Joan?

      • Krystal

Levitt is a fantastic actor. Mysterious Skin anyone?

      • Bartman

I just caught an old episode of “Roseanne” with a VERY young JGL playing DJ’s friend. He was talented even then!

    • Templar

Fell in love with her in “Failure To Launch’, and “Tin Man”. Her sister is the block of wood. Zooey is a sweetheart.

      • mary q contrary

Thank you! She has a quirky, mild-mannered, almost whimsical air about her, and the whole block of wood thing I just don’t get. I happen to find most of her roles very satisfying, and hardly ever wooden (though I have run across a few films in which she was given so little to do, it would have been hard for ANYONE to inject life into the character). I don’t know if I’d call her sister wooden, but that’s only because I don’t watch Bones and have never been aware of any roles for her outside of it.

      • Jenna

Do not speak of emily in such a manner! I like zooey, a lot, but her sister is the better actress. rename fox the Deschanel Network

      • Darvy

The only thing I’ve seen Emily in before and besides Bones was Stephen Kings TV movie Rose Red. And she was the first of the group to die. I love Zooey a lot, but I’ll have to see about this pilot. I did not like Zooey when she guested on Bones, I’m not sure she can pull of a weekly tv show but we shall see.

    • TJ. Church

She’s great, but sounds like a garbage show.

    • Garry

See my comment above. Zooey is beyond adorable!

  • Terry

She may be “adorable”, but she can’t act to save her life. Unless it’s playing the above-mentioned blocks of wood.

    • bobbyh

      Terry, I agree – lol.

      • PJ

I agree Terry! Just because her sister is on a great show, doesn’t mean she can act, and she can’t.

    • Garry

      Ahhhh, shaddup!

  • ellie

    Zooey Deschanel is SOOOO PRETTTYYYY.
there ya go, Anth =) I was already planning on saying that before I saw your comment.

  • Mary Brady

Correction! I LOVE Zooey but I don’t like that picture. Is that her?

    • Liv

EW has the habit of picking the worst pictures in the entire world of an actor/actress. This isn’t even a clear shot! It’s blurry! Come on EW I know you aren’t reporting world news but couldn’t you at least put a little heart into it?

  • Barry

Another comedy? What’s the status of “Human Target”?

    • Templar

      HT cancelled

  • Peng9803

Damon Wayans Jr. and Max Greenfield alongside Zooey? Sold! (Unless Happy Endings is picked up and Wayans sticks with that.)

    • LJHand

Max Greenfield!?! I loved him as Leo on Veronica Mars. I’ll watch.

  • Gregory

Love Zooey! Too bad I had to surf elsewhere to get more info about the premise of the series.

  • Jiji Moran

Is she related Emily Deschanel’s sister (Also Known As: Bones.) I will check it out, but will not watch if it isn’t funny – not watching just because she is in it.

    • Jeremy

      Emily is Zooey’s older sister.
