'General Hospital' generates most nods among soaps at Daytime Emmys; not much love for Oprah

General Hospital earned 21 Daytime Emmy nominations while The Young and the Restless grabbed 20 today from the Academy of TV Arts and Sciences. Even canceled soaps All My Children and One Life to Live made a respectable showing, each generating 13 and 12 nods, respectively, for the awards fest that’ll air June 19 on CBS from Las Vegas.

As for talk shows, The Ellen DeGeneres Show topped the genre with 12, followed by six for Today Show, six for The View and five for The Oprah Winfrey Show, which ends this month. Overall, ABC lead with 46 nominations, followed by 42 for CBS  and 15 for NBC.

In the best soap race, All My Children will vie for the top prize against The Bold and the Beautiful, The Young and the Restless and General Hospital. For best talk show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show will compete against Live with Regis and Kelly, Rachael Ray and The View.

Susan Lucci didn’t get a nod in the best actress race (though fellow AMC stars Alicia Minshew and Debbi Morgan did). And Dr. Oz will go up against Kelly Ripa and Regis Philbin, Rachael Ray and the MDs on The Doctors and the ladies on The View for the title of best talk show host. For the complete list of nominees, click here.

Wayne Brady will host the live telecast, which will also honor Pat Sajak and Alex Trebek with Lifetime Achievement Awards.

The fact that GH and AMC are nominated for Outstanding Daytime Drama Series and OLTL isn’t says a lot about how out of touch these nominations are. OLTL is by far the best of the three ABC soaps and definitely the one that shouldn’t be axed.

I guess it doesn’t matter that it’s a farce since soaps will be all but gone this time next year.

    • Lois (From Smallville) STINKS!

I’m surprised they’re even doing a daytime emmys show. This was a concept created to recoginse the acting capabilities of the daytime soap actors/actresses. We are now down to 6 soaps, and after January 2012, that will be wittled down to 4. Its almost pointless to do a show next year when your pool for best actor/actress, soap, etc, are going to be from the same soaps.

      • Sarah

        I totally agree!

    • David

I agree 100%, magreeda! OLTL is the best one; I don’t understand why it is being axed. If it was in GH’s timeslot, it would probably do a lot better than GH!

    • Brenda Barrett

AMEN. Unfortunately, the noms are based on only 1-2 submitted eps. OLTL is consistently good, every day, while GH is a huge stinker that manages to pull off a great disaster plot with f/x once or twice a year.

    • Captain

Personal opinion. I think General Hospital is the best ABC soap and seeing as its the highest rated one, I’d say many people agree.

      • sandra

        agreed!

      • Sharyl

        GH is the best!!!!!!!!

      • Ida Seenit

You are mistaken the highest rated soap opera and still best is “Young and the Restless” no question.

    • Lena120

I agree. OLTL is 10 times better than GH will ever be. Don’t get me wrong, all three of shows have their issues but GH is a shadow of its former self. I constantly watch it on fast forward — IF that. At least OLTL has stories and characters I’m interested in. GH is Frons’ pet and it’s skating by on its former glory and prestige, which is lame and unfair. Franco and Brenda’s return were done horribly. And it’s been nothing but boring mob central for the past decade. Yawn.

    • D

It’s OLTL’s own fault. Each soap gets to submit ONE episode for Emmy consideration and OLTL submitted one of their cringe-worthy musical prom episodes from May. OLTL is perpetually idiotic when it comes to submissions.

  • Joe R

I agree, magreeda! FYI, Lynnette Rice, your link to the nominations is a bad one. Please fix.

    • AcaseofGeo

The link is ridiculous. Its the IRS or something???

  • oreo

GH has the most dismal acting on television.

    • Bobby

Exactly. GH is laughably bad to the point it is embarrassing. It always has been.

  • AC

So let me get this straight. Julie Pinson (Janet) gets a nod for doing nothing on the show and Eric Sheffer Stevens who brought people back to As the World Turns did not. Can they just cancel the Daytime Emmys already?

  • efrain

Susan Lucci should of been nominated as a farewell gift to her!

    • Dave

Actually, next year’s awards would be the last hurrah for both AMC and OLTL since they are still airing new episodes.

What I want to know is why the link to the full list of nominees take us to some site where a login and password are needed?

  • Kan

“Not Much Love For Oprah,” is misleading. She hasn’t submitted herself for Best Host, or Best Talk Show for many years.

    • v70w

And she shouldn’t because she isn’t!

      • Kan

        Keep telling yourself that.

    • Lucy

Oprah’s departure is what’s upsetting the apple cart on ABC line-up. And although I like the other two soaps, GH is the best.

  • claudenorth

With soaps being phased out, I’d imagine that the daytime Emmys will eventually be reduced to a non-televised dinner, with highlights added to the prime time ceremony.

  • Alberto

The Emmy’s are a joke. Actors pick the same names on the ballot year after year because they don’t watch other shows. Michael Muhney from The Young and the Restless should have been nominated but, since he’s relatively new, was overlooked. Same goes for all new talent. The Emmy’s don’t do a thing to promote daytime by rewarding the same people year after year.

    • Ida Seenit

I totally agree! The acting on Young and The Restless except for Victor he mumbles too much. But the newer actors and actresses are the best and some of them came from the now defunct “Guiding Light”. I use to watch all the ABC soaps but they are so boring, except OLTL, hey Young and the Resteless casting agents hire some of those actors, especially Rex!

    • jayne

Actually it’s not just the daytime Emmy’s they do that on the other one too. The same 6 or 7 shows year after year, boring as hell. Stopped watching years ago.

  • Beauty

GH, has the best actors in soaps! Jonathan Jackson is simply AMAZING. Even characters I can’t stand i.e. Carly are amazing actors. The character Michael and his rape story was greatly acted out.

The actors of GH deserve this nod. If OLTL was so great it wouldn’t be canceled right now so save your sob stories.

    • Brenda Barrett

You don’t know what you are talking about. GH wasn’t spared the ax because it’s good; it was spared because it’s Frons’ pet and the highest profile soap on the network. It is the worst soap on ABC and, rest assured, Frons will soon ax it, too. Then his “work” will be complete.

      • AER

If you feel that way, why is your screenname the same as a high profile character on GH? That can’t actually be your real name, and if you insist it is, I feel sorry for you.

      • Brenda Barrett

My screen name is my homage to when GH used to be good. I watched the show for 20 years, until it became a misogynistic mess.

      • AER

I agree the the show twenty years ago was better, although I am still a fan. But you pick her? Vanessa Marcil Giovinazzo is a joke when it comes to acting, then and now. Why not pay homage to Anna Devane or Bobbie Spencer? They were fabulous and I would love for them to come back as a part of the regular cast.

      • Brenda Barrett

Anna Devane is my all-time favorite TV character. Not soap character. TV character, period. She was strong and brave and funny, yet human and flawed (e.g. she was not a good mother). I adore Finola Hughes. But I chose Brenda’s name because we share a lot of similarities…remember that Brenda wasn’t always a victim. Remember when she and Lois ran a record label? Ah, the good ol’ days.

    • Oye

Jackson is good the others are lame. The Michael rape story was weird and nowhere near as great as Liz webber’s rape story a decade ago. He was raped in prison. wtf!

      • Beauty

A lot of men get raped in prison. The story was well done.

    • joz

GH IS BAD.IT’S NOT ABOUT THE DOCTORS ANYMORE.THE MOB ALL THE TIME.GIVE ME A BREAK.BRING ANNA ROBERT SEAN TIFFANY ALAN OLIVIA RICK LESLEY BOBBIE GINNY DUKE MONICA HEATHER BACK.PLEASE.

  • Jethro

When I clicked on the see the full list, I got some dumb ad.

Either way, some of you mentioned the Daytime Emmys was started because of soap/actors, then why wasn’t it called the Soap Awards.

Clearly daytime emmy is for a reason, any and all daytime shows and individuals are eligible!

  • butterkup

    “save your sob stories.”

GH will be gone next year too so emjoy it while you can since it doesn’t have much more time then OLTL – which is by far the most consistently best of all of the soaps.

Like seriously Blinkie and Mo can act? JJ is very good at looking weepy but otherwise I sure dont see it.

    • joz

SORRY OLTL IS NOT GOOD.TINA TINA TINA.COME BACK.ANDREA EVANS.PLEASE LET THE SHOW GO OUT WITH SOME CLASS.

      • reecee

Andrea Evans is currently annoying the hell out of me on the Bold and the Beautiful…aka the worst soap on CBS.

  • Oye

Gh is terrible. The two male leads (Burton and Bernard) are not even good looking anymore. One is balding and the other always looks constipated.

    • Bobby’s Robot

Bernard is the worst actor on TV. Can’t believe he actually won once!

  • jt

Ellen gets 12 but none for her as host???!!!!!

    • Rob

      JT,

I think Ellen doesn’t put her name on the ballot for best host as she has won several times already. Oprah did this too. Ellen just put her show in the best show category since this supports the whole staff of the show.

  • joz

WHAT ABOUT DAYS OF OUR LIVES.SURE SOMETIMES THE SHOW IS OUTRAGEOUS.BUT IT STILL DESERVES NOMINATIONS.I WILL NOT MISS ONE LIFE TO LIVE AND ALL MY CHILDREN.THEY’RE SO BORING.OLTL NEEDS TINA BACK LIKE 20 YEARS AGO.LOUSIE SOREL NADIA BJORLIN ALISON SWEENEY CRYSTAL CHAPPELL SUZANNE ROGERS ARIANNE ZUCKER JAMES SCOTT ARE TOO GOOD.NOT TO GET ANY NODS.BY THE WAY DAYS SHOULD SIGN ALOMA WRIGHT TO A CONTRACT.SHE’S FABULOUS.

  • Felicia Scorpio-Jones

It doesn’t surprise me that GH got the most soap nods. They know how to do episodes that scream EMMY NOM. Forget character driven story, lets have the hospital burn down! James Franco running around! Kill little Jake off but make the real victim Luke! Have Michael get raped in prison! Stage a bus crash that involves children (and this wasn’t even related to Jake) The latest terrorist/very bad mobster to hit town! Father of teenage abuser shoots up the ER! The latest Bio-hazard! I used to be the biggest GH fan until they (the braintrust that is Brian Frons) fired executive producer Wendy Riche. She helped bring heart, humor, action, mystery, and family back to GH. Fron’s team of Jill Farren Phelps as EP and Bob Guza as headwriter have totally decimated the essence of the show. GH now is dark, humorless, depressing, mucho violent, and filled with characters we don’t care about anymore due to horrible writing. GH deserves to be canned, not AMC or OLTL. In fact, I think OLTL is beating GH in the most recent ratings. I hope that ABC and Frons regret their decision to cancel AMC & OLTL forever. They deserve no mercy…I mean really, The Chew???? The Revolution???? Katie Couric????

    • joz

OLTL AND AMC ARE JUST AS BAD.

      • Rob

But you praise Days??? Are we watching the same show? I’m not a regular viewer but talk about over-the-top and hammy acting! Some plots on Days make Passions look Emmy worthy. I mean really, Rafe II…enough said. Sami shoots EJ in the head and he still looks like an adonis. The prison plot involving organ stealing? Sure all plots are sometimes campy but Days takes the cake. Also, the characters always talk to themselves…very annoying! Don’t get too sunny about Day’s future. They get renewed annually and it’s ratings are tanking.

    • Brenda Barrett

I have watched one or more of the ABC soaps since I was ten (30 years!). I watch none of ABC’s prime time programming, so when OLTL is gone, the network will lose me forever (I’ll take my 18-49 demographic and strong earning power with me.) I can’t believe Sweeney and Frons have gotten away with this.

      • Misspriss_1

I’m with you all the way, Brenda!! I do not watch any prime time shows on ABC either. And since they cancelled my OLTL, me, and my demographic will be watching ANYTHING else!! Brian Frons will go down as the idiot that killed the soap opera!!
