NBC orders Spielberg's 'Glee'-style musical, 'Prime Suspect' to series

Maria-Bello

NBC’s fall series orders have begun!

The Peacock has picked up Prime Suspect, the series adaption of the acclaimed Brit miniseries, with Maria Bello (pictured) stepping into the role made famous by Helen Mirren.

NBC also ordered Steven Spielberg’s musical drama Smash. It stars Debra Messing, Katharine McPhee, Jack Davenport and Anjelica Huston, and follows a cross-section of characters who come together to put on a Broadway musical.

Chuck and Parenthood are also looking good for pickups, though nothing is official yet.

On the comedy side, Christina Applegate is returning to TV. NBC ordered her comedy about being a working mother, along with another laugher from stand-up comic Whitney Cummings. It’s about a young couple in a committed relationship in “today’s complicated world.”

What about Playboy? Awake? And … Wonder Woman? NBC is done for the night, I’m told. We’ll pick this back up tomorrow.

I don’t remember where I read this, but I am positive that I read Jonathan Groff was possible joining Smash. I am sure it is not true because we would have heard something definitive by now. He would be perfect though. I Glee won’t make him a regular, I hope another show will soon. I need my weekly dose of Mr. Groff.

    Yay

    • not cool

Prime suspect wont do well, the reason for its BBC success was the age of Helen Mirren, also America tends to ruin British shows, why not just come up with their own ideas?

      • june

I hope the writers of Prime Suspect are watching The Killing. That series has taken a beautiful woman and allowed her to play a real police officer instead of a jiggling bimbo who solves crimes.

What about Are You There Vodka?

    • Captain

Is that on NBC? I thought it was ABC?

  • TVLINE.COM

FYI – Chuck has been renewed.

    • LMFAO

      CHUCK ME!

    • Crystal

TV Line has the same info. EW does – pretty desperate move.

      • Emily

Oh my gosh! You mean two sites devoted to entertainment news are reporting on entertainment news? No way!

      • Crystal

@Emily – see the comment above mine that I was responding to, please. Your reply makes no sense. I have no problem with two sites reporting news, I have a problem with one deliberately trolling the other.

    • Barry

Once again NBC renews that crap but cancels The Event & Chase.

      • Avie

Because The Event & Chase ARE crap. I’ll admit to watching The Event though…it’s crap but at least I’m guaranteed violence and death on a huge scale every week.

As for Chase. Really? You liked that?

      • mrbilliam

Can we bemoan the loss of shows we like without bashing everyone else’s? Especially when the shows being renewed are much more critically celebrated than the ones you are bemoaning.

      • Nick K.

To be or not to bemoan…that is the question!

  • Jason

Um, so I totally read that headline as though they were bringing Prime Suspect to the US as a Glee-style musical. I was worried.

    • tipsy

      Lol! I know,right?

That said, Glee-style Broadway musical has zero chance of survival. How many people out there is interested in Broadway? Not many. Plus this doesn`t have teenagers in it like HSM and Glee. Nice try Spielberg but this has canbcellation written all over.

      • Mycatsleepstoomuch

Gays Gays Gays! Gays will watch what is sure to be a wonderful show. Hopefully enough to keep it on.

      • LaLoLa

typical teenager who thinks the world is all about them.

      • Kat

I’d watch it! There’s basically a 100% chance it will be a better-written show than “Glee”, which drives me nuts but I keep watching because there are no other musicals on TV….until this one. I bet you there will be at least 80% fewer dropped storylines, rebooted characters, and general reality-manipulation-to-service-the-plot-and-theme-of-the-week. CAN’T WAIT.

      • Johnification

Just because it’s a musical series doesn’t mean it’s Glee-style…it sounds much more like Slings and Arrows, just with music.

      • tipsy

@LaLoLa, the wolrd may not be but entertainment industry is because we are the most important demogrpahics.

@Kat I hope you are right “80% fewer dropped storylines, rebooted characters, and general reality-manipulation-to-service-the-plot-and-theme-of-the-week. “

      • @tipsy

hate to break it to you but 18-49 is the most important demographic.

      • Alli

Didn’t the networks learn anything from Viva Laughlin?!

  • Kelly

Really hope 17th Precinct gets picked up

  • bmospr04

Excited about Prime Suspect even though The Closer is the exact same show…WTF about Chuck? it won’t die…The show has 9 lives

    • DN

“Chuck” is quality entertainment that some people just can’t recognize. I feel sorry for you. Really.

      • Jakson

and maybe you can’t recognize that a lot of people just don’t care for the show. Deal with it.

    • Lois

I doubt they’ll be able to come close to the quality of the original, brilliant “Prime Suspect” starring Helen Mirren. “The Closer” is awesome in it’s own right, but it’s still not “Prime Suspect.”

    • 3reddogs

But Kyra Sedwick has announced this will be the last season for The Closer.

  • Stella

Playboy? E! already did that with the girls next door, right? One thing is for sure, the show can’t be based in reality.

    • Mycatsleepstoomuch

It’s a drama about Playboy bunnies in the Chicago club in the 1960s. It’s like Mad Men with naked ladies.

  • graeme

I hope Applegate’s show is good. She’s awesome and needs the proper vehicle.

  • Rodolfo

Well I don’t see anything original out of NBC they have no creative ideas anymore greatvacationspots.net and gossipmagazineonline.com they will keep sinking in ratings like all network TV i the US.

  • Michael

Chase was for people who understand it

  • Jeff from Jersey; yes New Jersey

The Debra Messing project sounds great. Prime Suspect has some big expectations to fill. Let*s see what else NBC has on its mind.

I wonder if Smash will steal glees viewers. They say the pilot is great and glee has been declining for awhile now.

    • Dax

That will only matter if they put it on at the exact same time as Glee. I get the feeling that this will be more of a 9:00 show.

  • manom

    Yayyy!! SMASH, SMASH !!
