'American Idol' wins Wednesday, steady with last year

Steady as she goes: Fox’s American Idol delivered 22.4 million viewers and a 6.9 preliminary adults 18-49, winning Wednesday night in the ratings. Those numbers are up slightly from last week and steady with the same night last year. In general, Idol ratings this season have retained 95 percent of its strength compared to last season, despite (or because of?) all the changes on the show.

Dead Sitcom Walking Breaking In (7.6 million, 2.4) was flat. Yup, the cancelled Christian Slater comedy drew a bigger rating than Tuesday’s renewed Raising Hope, which is the double-edged sword of having an Idol lead-in — the reality hit sets you up to win but, darn it, you better win.

The CBS block was mostly on par this week: Survivor: Redemption Island (10.4 million, 3.0), Criminal Minds (13.1 million, 3.3) and Suspect Behavior (9.1 million, 2.1)

ABC’s comedy block made gains, including The Middle (7.2 million, 2.1) up 5 percent, Better With You (6 million, 1.9), which might squeak into another season with that number, up 19 percent, Modern Family (10.1 million, 4.2) up 8 percent, Cougar Town (6.1 million, 2.4) rising 9 percent, and a flat hour of Happy Endings (3.9 million, 1.6).

NBC aired Minute to Win It (3 million, 0.9) and Law & Order: SVU (8 million, 2.4), down 8 percent.

SVU was a great episode last night. This show continues to provide it all every week.

Whre is ANTM is your article, the ratings are so low, it’s not worth mentioning?

Can’t wait for the “way too much coverage of American Idol” to end on May 25, the final show of the season, who will again, crown the wrong Idol!!

Agreed, today is Thursday, yesterday was Wednesday. Unless EW is now into prophecy…

Was just getting ready to tweet a “how can this be” when I saw Jacob beat me to it.

Really happy to see BETTER WITH YOU pulling better numbers. Don’t understand why Happy Endings (which I also do like) is considered a better lock for renewal than BWY when you look at the numbers – and at the comedy itself.

  • tomm

Cougar Town up, suck it “friends curse”.

  • Kelly

    Penny Can!

LOL to Cougar Town scaring away 43% of Modern Family
s audience. Glad to see Better With You up!

Did I miss something or were Tuesday night viewership not mentioned?

I wish that, with all the changes, “American Idol” ratings should go down, down, down… right into its very end!

  • Jose

Happy Endings need to be seen by more people.

After James was voted off I hope you lose thousands of viewers, because its sure not about how good you can sing thats for sure……GOOD LUCK JAMES YOU ARE THE IDOL IN MY BOOK

I hope “Happy Endings” gets renewed for a second season! It’s is very funny for a freshman sitcom. I recommend it to everyone. Especially because former SNLer Casey Wilson is in it.

  • bravo

Those high ratings are about to drop, HARD. After last night’s “debacle” many people will stop watching, including me.
