NBC renews 'Parenthood,' 'Harry's Law'

parenthood

NBC solidly performing family dramedy Parenthood is going to raise a third season.

The network picked up the show for a third round, with fellow bubble show Chuck also looking likely to come back for season five.

Parenthood didn’t do as well this season as its first, averaging 6.7 million viewers and a 2.7 adult demo rating including DVR use, down about 21 percent from last year. Still, that’s good enough for NBC, which along with ABC has had trouble filling its 10 p.m. slots in recent years.

The network also picked up the modestly performing Harry’s Law for a second season. The show had a fairly large audience of 11.6 million viewers, but was weak in the adult demo, averaging 2.3.

Also in the current NBC news-pocalypse pre-upfront frenzy: NBC has renewed Chuck for a final season, has cancelled The Event, has rejected Wonder Woman,  greenlit Chelsea Handler’s sitcom and ordered dramas about Playboy and others.

Yay! I love this show…I can’t wait to see wht the do next. Especially w/ the Hatie & Alex relationship…

    • parkR

Good, I was worried that if it was cancelled I was going to post “STRING… WHERE THE F*** IS WALLACE”

    • Ally

      YAYY!!!!

  • de

    super good news!

    • Parker

FANTASTIC news! Parenthood is perfectly cast and acted. The writing and characters are complex and sentimental without being saccharine. I completely buy the Bravermans as a family and never miss this show. Love Harry’s Law as well. Bravo NBC!!

      • Caren

Parenthood is awesome!!! And I like Harry’s Law too…..

  • Anne

Ugh no. I was hoping it would be cancelled so Lauren Graham and Peter Krause could move on to a show worth their time.

    • TJ. Church

Maybe Lauren… But after Sports Night, Peter’s luck doesn’t look good.

Oh, & ask K. Bell why everyone likes Dax!

      • PhilipDC

Umm, Krause did pretty well with Six Feet AFTER Sports Night…

      • jrs

Whatcha talkin about Willis? Peter had a great run on Six Feet Under

    • Michael

This is actually a well written and produced show. The cast is very talented. It’s because it’s a family drama that it might be looked down upon, but there are really great performances every episode.

      • Anne

I disagree with you about the cast being talented. I would say 4 actors out of the entire cast are talented (Lauren, Peter, Mae and Craig T.). The rest are mediocre. And the writing is predictable, saccharine garbage.

      • ej

I agree that because it is considered a family drama it doesn’t get the respect it deserves. Saying 4 of the entire cast is talented is garbage. You obviously don’t even watch the show. It leaves me moved every week and if the characters weren’t believable that wouldn’t happen. Lauren Graham is my least favorite actually. The kid who plays Max is amazing.

      • Anne

lol I watch the show every week because I love Lauren and Peter so yes I can say what I said. It’s my opinion, get over it.

      • ej

The writing is predictable, saccharine garbage. Yet I watch it every week. Obviously you are entitled to your own opinion-as shown by your multiple moronic posts. I’m officially “over it” lol douche

      • Caren

Lauren Graham is my least favorite. Followed by Hattie, she is soooo bland! Love Max, the DAD, Peter Krause, Christina and Julia.

  • Harlow

Woohoo! That’s excellent news. All my favorite shows weren’t canceled this year, including Fringe.

    • stip

Fringe was renewed for next season

  • Fundi

Great news – This is certainly one of the most well cast, well acted, interesting dramas that’s graced TV recently. Good luck to cast and crew, keep up the good work!

  • JK

    THIS MADE MY DAY!

    • Michael

Seriously! Me too! Thank God, I was really going to be sad if it wasn’t renewed; I LOVE this show!!!

  • chrisz

    Hurray!! Love this show.

  • CarrieL

Best show ever! Beautifully acted, produced, and written. Yay for the BRAVERMANS! This show is of amazing quality. So happy!
Anne, you’ve clearly recently suffered a blow to the head. Hope your brain trauma recovery is quick.

    • KEVIN

Agreed; the chemistry on Parenthood is the most organic of any show of recent memory. It has quietly became the best show on tv of any genre. If NBC could give it a decent timeslot and/or lead in, I think it could perform better. In a perfect World it would follow Community, Parks & Rec, The Office and 30 Rock on Thursdays, it’d be NBC’s best Thursday lineup since Seinfeld, Friends and ER were all on at the same time

      • ej

Couldn’t have said it better myself…I LOVE this idea!

  • Brigette

YES! One of the best shows on television right now, and without a doubt, one of the most amazing casts EVER!

  • Rach

    Best news of the day!!!

  • Otis

This show is a breath of fresh air in a world of reality television junk. Thanks for renewing it, NBC!!

  • carrie

Harry’s Law got renewed? Pity. I tried to hard to like it but just could not get into it. I will not be watching this season. Parenthood is OK. I will give it another chance.

    • Lucy

      Harry’s Law is good!

    • j

I love Harry’s Law. Nice to have talented Kathy Bates on the small screen.

  • bmospr04

shocked about harry’s law, good call on parenthood hope they tone down the dramatized promos…Let’s see if the new shows can take NBC out of 4th place
