CBS cancels 'The Defenders' and William Shatner

sht-my-dad-saysImage Credit: Ron P. Jaffe/CBSHey Hollywood, The Shat is officially up for grabs!

EW has learned that CBS handed out pink slips to the William Shatner starrer $#*! My Dad Says, along with The Defenders and the comedy Mad Love to make room for a new crop of fall shows. Despite attracting unfavorable headlines because of the faux expletive in the title, $#*! broke out of the gate strong last fall before its ratings started to tumble. The same went for Defenders, which took an additional shot in the arm after it moved time slots.

Despite its strong creative auspices (it’s from the talented Matt Tarses of Worst Week), Mad Love never caught on with viewers.

What shows will replace them? Well, we already know CBS ordered Person of Interest, a new drama from J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk that centers on an ex-CIA agent, presumed dead, who teams up with a mysterious billionaire to prevent violent crimes in NYC. It stars Michael Emerson and James Caviezel. The network also gave a thumbs up to Two Broke Girls, which is from Michael Patrick King and Whitney Cummings, and follows two broke 22-year old gals in Brooklyn. It’s a multi-camera laugher that features Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs.

CBS will announce its fall lineup on Wednesday in New York.

Bummer. I really liked The Defenders. Fun show for a Friday night.

    • CBS used to do Friday right

I missed Now and Again, Numb3rs, etc. They need another semi scifi show in that slot. I suggest bringing back “Legend of The Seeker”

      • MattS

I agree about Legend of the Seeker. Really going to miss that show. Great cast, stories and special effects.

      • Sgt Fuzzy Boots

legend of the seeker rocked I loved that show

      • Leah C

I agree. I bet Legend of the Seeker would have a wider audience if they ran it on network tv instead of syndication like it’s first and only two seasons. It was an awesome show!

      • ks

        Great Idea!

    • Kim from Texas

I really liked “The Defenders.” It was a really upbeat television series like “The Mentalist”. They didn’t give it much of a chance to succeed.

      • Shannon

Agreed. I really enjoyed the show and had hoped CBS would give it a shot, but somehow I knew they wouldn’t.

      • Beverly from Ga.

I enjoyed and looked forward to “The Defenders” each week!!!! Why do they keep adding more reality shows and take away all the good ones? I for one am sick of reality shows!

      • Scott A

They get rid of good shows like “The Defenders” and replace them with reality shows and game shows because network execs believe viewers to be stupid and have a short attention span. So far we haven’t done enough to convince them otherwise.

      • tom

This is ridiculous! “The Defenders” was one show I truly hoped would make it. CBS needs to stop with all these moronic reality shows like “Survivor”, “Amazing Race”, and “Big Brother” and start keeping good dramatic series that are just starting. If CSI:NY has been canceled, CBS just lost a permanent viewer. They might as well try to revive “M*A*S*H”, seeing as they had such good luck with “Hawai’i 5-0″.

      • Pat G

I really liked ‘the defenders’. It was a lot of fun, & the actors had good chemistry together. Moving it to Friday night is what killed it, after a 6 week break.

      • stuart

Loved the defenders gits 4 cancelling it .

      • Rod J

The networks keep driving us to FX and TBS/TNT and SyFy with their programming choices.

      • John

Tom.nothing moronic about SURVIVOR: plotting, planning, and dealing with the elements. Great show. There are reasons why it has been on the air for over a decade, and this carbon-copy lawyer drama was cut after one weak season. I’m not a fan of the other “moronic” shows you listed, but SURVIVOR is intelligent and entertaining, Love it still.

      • Jay

I loved the Defenders!!! I watched every single episode (while strongly suspecting it wouldn’t get another season)
Idots who watch reality TV are ruining TV entertainment for the rest of us. If people stop watching that crap, they will stop giving it to us.
Please!!!! Be part of the SOLUTION and BOYCOTT REALITY TV!!!!!!!!

      • Edie

This show was one of the best I have seen come along. I looked at the shows that are coming back and never saw most of them.

      • Angela

WOW I had been scanning my TV for the show and just found out at work it was cancelled. What is cbs doing to all their shows?

    • Solange

I liked the Defenders! It was good and the cast was great as well as the story lines! Sucks!

      • julia

        i like the defenders…too bad it’s gone.

      • Jenna

Nooooooo!!!!! I am so sad The Defenders got cancelled…how is this possible?? It was the best new show out there, and I am very, very upset! I also loved Mad Love, but that move didn’t surprise me as much as The Defenders. BOO CBS!

    • Dayna

I agree. I loved the show. After I first watched it, I never found It again.

      • mcfly

This show didn’t deserve to get cancelled. I’m really disappointed.

    • Nona

I was really surprised @ the terrific chemestry. The Defenders was fun and had a great spirit. I never really was a fan of either of the leads but their good natured bantering really gave a new life to the same old story line. I was really hoping for season two.

      • kurt collins

RIP Defenders, I loved the show!!! I do have to admit that NBC/Universal found viewers for shows like the Defenders through cable. Hopefully CBS can do the same.

    • Valley Girl

Yeah, it’s too bad. I was pleasantly surprised with the chemistry between the cast. After what seemed like so such promotion when the show started, it wasn’t good news when they shifted this show to Friday nights, and now, cancellation.

    • Ladyj

Defenders was a great show and the two actors worked well together and was great humor. I do not understnd when a show premeirs strong and great reviews and ratings, some doornob thinks “hmmmm lets change them to a differnt night and screw everything up”. Lets hope both stars are picked up quickly and their talent is used to its fullest.

    • Andrew Z

im glad “what the bleep my dad says”was canceled!did not think it was funny..good people in a bad show!but i feel sorry about”The Defenders”..was a good show

    • KikiD

I wonder if another network will pick it up for a midseason offering. It actually had decent numbers, but < what CBS expects for every show.

    • Rush

I almost shat myself when I read this news.

  • Lydia Roberts

Whether they admit it or not, when J.J. Abrams, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman came up with the alternative reality idea, they automatically came up with a way to include William Shatner in the film series. As this is an alternative reality, this new James Kirk can go on to live a long, full, rich and happy life, get married and have a family. A flashforward of an old James Kirk played by William Shatner would suffice just like when Harrison Ford made a special guest appearance on The Indiana Jones Chronicles television series.

  • Shelby Coman

Damn it, woman! “Starrer” is not a word!! Quick trying to make it work!!!

    • ryan

nobody cares conan. This is america and we love fake words so rott in hell.

      • AcaseofGeo

Ryan, I hate it when they use the word “starrer” too. Its clumsy and awkward. Maybe we love fake words, but at least make them good. As for the cancellations, all 3 were mediocre at best.

      • Monica

I am American and I find it annoying. It used to be clever now it’s anything but.

    • chocolateislove

Quit trying to make “starrer” happen. It’s not going to happen.

      • JayNYC

Well, just don’t go read Variety then.

    • Rush

I agree. Vehicle is a much more understandable word choice.

  • Lauren

    Good cancellation choices

    • Scott A

Well good except for The Defenders you mean.

  • But what I REALLY meant to say is…

    I think she meant: “vehicle.”

  • Ravie

    I love The Defenders. Bummer!

  • A

They forgot to cancel all of Chuck Lorre’s garbage.

    • Javadude54

Which would include The Big Bang Theory, the funniest show on TV?

      • The Man

umm….because Big Bang is a piece of crap.

      • Dave

The funniest show on TV? Haha, that’s a good one.

      • Dr. Linus

“Which would include The Big Bang Theory, the funniest show on TV?”

To answer your question, no, it’s not the funniest show on TV.

      • AcaseofGeo

Modern Family is the funniest show on TV with Big Bang Theory a close second. That’s my opinion. @ The Man, to say its a piece of crap is ridiculous by any standard. You might not like the show but to say its “crap” causes you to lose all credibility.

    • LOL

      Chuck Lorre is crap.

      • Kilmer

        Oh, shut up Charlie!

      • Meli

Go smoke some more Meth, Charlie.

    • BJG

Garbage or not, they get ratings and won’t be canceled anytime soon.

      • judy

I despise Chuck Lorre for the most part (the guy is not well known by average audience and media always portray him in a good light but in the business it is well known that he is not the most “kind” of guy..i will stop at that) but we can’t deny that his shows (above all Two and a half Men and now Big Bang Theory) are network tv powerhouses..the guy is very rich and CBS loves him and his ratings magnet shows..Hey even movie stars want to work with him..

      • @judy

I probably have about as much ‘in the biz’ cred as you, and Lorre is no villain.

    • Sam

Hey! The Big Bang Theory is a good show! Just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean you have to watch it!

      • What?

That’s like saying if people don’t want to watch a show, you can’t stop them. Gibberish.

    • Cat

  • Pat D.

Ironic the ratings fell later on when Shatner’s show actually started getting GOOD. The earliest episodes were painfully unfunny.

    • AcaseofGeo

I agree! Once they added Jean Smart, it actually sorta got almost good. I even wrote that on a past EW post and lots of people agreed.

    • Steve

Yea, I’ve enjoyed the show. The actors are good and the stories are fine; but I wish they’d pushed things a bit more. With the title it has I kinda wanted to see an Archie Bunker for the new century – I like how they had him be an ass but still have a heart – I just wanted him to be more outrageous. Sadly, we have another case of a show cancelled too soon. Honestly, I can’t think of many shows that become instant hits.

    • tom hunter

How I woulda retooled — My Dad Says:

Ditch the daughter in law. Brash, overacted, not funny, obnoxious.

Played up the chemistry between the brothers more, with Dad serving as the “Greek chorus” for their goings on.

Keep Jean Smart, she softened up Shatner’s character.

Keep the housekeeper guy to a part time role so it didn’t become overbearing.

I think those tweaks would have really made for a better show.

  • AB

NOOOOOOO!!!! I love The Defenders! I can’t believe they cancelled it. Crappy decision CBS.

  • Tractornuts

To bad they could not find a niche for Cpt. Kirk, But I dont feel sorry for him he has to much going for him.

  • Barry

I guess Belushi can stay on Broadway now.

    • Sam

oh Belushi is so boring, very dull actor bring back Jim from the death please, he was the talented one..miss you Jim Belushi.

      • Barry

        John is the dead one.

      • Scott A

Don’t diss Jim Belushi. He isn’t boring. He’s just as funny as his brother was – he just shows it in different ways. And just because he decided to go into drama doesn’t make him “boring”.

      • Sam

Haha sorry i was tired i meant JOHN Belushi of course, the talented one of course.

      • Kevin

I think you mean John Belushi, Sam.

      • Cass

        U mean John

      • Jim

Jim is the star it dimwit non chicago bear idiot. Yes his best was according to jim, but I never missed defenders! I can not believe u brought john up…. really? That’s his brother that’s gone u hope URLACHER, SINGLTERY, BUTKIS AND DITA GO TO UR HOUSE, FIND U, AND and give u a jim beat down. Disrespectin terd! Lunch time JERRYLEE! LOVE U JIM AND AND IM SORRY FOR THESE IDIOTS.

      • Jim

Sorry drinking and they cut my words out. Jim is the star. John was great in his own right. But to bring up his dead brother has as much class as the terd in ur bed. Jim my wife loves ur shows, I love ur shows, and any packersmacker cheese head the brings john up to criticized u should have jerry lee have lunch on there balls. God how disrespectful. Hope to c u on the tube soon ur way better then broadway…..

  • Craig

It’s a shame Mad Love couldn’t work with all the talent they had behind and in front of the camera. It was just never very good.

    • Eva

I agree. Mad Love just always felt like a very poorly done HIMYM knock off.

      • April

Even the bar shots looked the same

      • Heather

I agree. Judy Greer is a great actress, very charming and funny but this show was bad. She should have came back on Two and a half last year when Charlie Sheen was still on HIS show, her character with Sheen character were a great potential couple, very cute and funny and great chemistry..instead we had the awful Chelsea..and now we will never have the chance to see that..grrr..

    • Sara

I soooo wanted to like Mad Love. I mean, I love Sarah Chalke and Judy Greer. I even kept watching when it was really just, meh…hoping it would pick up. But it never really did. Hoping this means they can move on to better projects.

    • bootsycolumbia

Amen. That whole cast is so charming and talented, and so wasted on that lame show. I’m actually relieved that CBS put it out of its misery. Now maybe Judy Greer can find a project worthy of her.

    • Joe

Great actors and chemistry between them, terrible stories and it was never funny. I was just happy to see Sock and Elliot again.

  • Roland

How about bringing “Cold Case” back?

    • Carol

Oh my God, NO. Watch The Killing instead. The same group that made Cold Case dull is doing the same thing to its remake of a great Danish series.

      • MattS

Are you saying that The Killing is dull? I love that show and it is far from dull.

      • Scott A

Cold Case wasn’t dull. Yeesh, all these people making bad comments who never even watched the show. What did you want from Cold Case, dancing and singing? It was a drama about closing cold cases – how exciting did you want it to be?

    • Sue1

Oh my God YES. I loved Cold Case, still miss it, and am thankful for reruns.

    • JD

NAH Veena Sud’s doing The Killing, which is one of the best shows on TV. And @Carol it isn’t dull, its just realistic and focusses on character. Maybe you should take some ADD pills?

    • My son is also named Bort

The only good thing about Cold Case was the soundtrack each week.

  • Kim from Texas

I watched all 3 shows. Clearly, my interest somehow curses shows. Another show that I watch: Two and a Half Men.

    • Strepsi

Ohhhh, Kim honey, you’re not cursed, you’re not magic…. you just have terrible terrible taste in TV.

I just thought I’d get the truth out there fast, like ripping a Band-Aid

      • Buffy Freak

      • @Strepsi

Do you feel better? Smarter? Better looking? Sad.

  • Erin

I know I’m probably only one of about 10, but I loved Mad Love. I’m disappointed it never caught on.

    • Heather

I’m the second person then : ) I started watching it because I watch HIMYM and Mike&Molly. My issue with the show is that Ben and Kate really aren’t that interesting to watch, but I love watching Larry and Connie interact.

      • Purpleslog

Yep, “Larry and Connie” are the true main story line…they needed another 10 episodes to get us there though. Oh well.

    • kelsey

Count me as #3. I really liked where that show was going, and I love all four leads. (Plus, it taught me to appreciate Jason Biggs as more than the guy who f*cked a pie.)

    • Cass

I liked the cast of Mad Love and some scenes but it was a little too all over the place.

      • Auth

This was a truly quite great submit. In teorhy I’d like to write like this also getting time and actual effort to make a terrific piece of writing… but what can I say… I procrastinate alot and by no means appear to obtain some thing done.
