CNN's Don Lemon comes out

CNN’s weekend anchor Don Lemon reveals that he is gay in his new memoir, Transparent. “I abhor hypocrisy,” Lemon told the New York Times. “I think if you’re going to be in the business of news, and telling people the truth, of trying to shed light in dark places, then you’ve got to be honest. You’ve got to have the same rules for yourself as you do for everyone else.”

Lemon admitted he is scared by peoples’ reaction, but that CNN has assured him of their support. “I think it would be great if everybody could be out,” he said to the paper. “But it’s such a personal choice. People have to do it at their own speed. I respect that. I do have to say that the more people who come out, the better it is for everyone, certainly for the Tyler Clementis of the world.”

Don Lemon is my favorite anchor. Didn’t ask, don’t care. What he does in his private life doesn’t affect his job.

    • SteevoNYC

You know what comes next, right? Lemon Party. dub dub dub dot lemonparty dot com

      • Jason

Now it’s time for Anderson Cooper to finally come out

      • Ann-Margret

And then they should kiss on camera. In slow-motion. In the shower.

      • Matt

    • shirl

I so agree with Dede. I enjoy Don Lemon’s CNN segment. He is great at his job. Don’t think Anderson Cooper is gay, is he? This comment is directed to Steevo I’m NYC

  • trystan

Good for him. Still the man on CNN

  • just me

Well, more proof I have no gaydar. Whatever. He’s a good journalist and that’s what he was hired to do at CNN.

    • Daily

I heard that someone in the news media would come out today. Everyone speculated Oprah or Cooper – was not expecting this.

But I don’t know how this is supposed to affect me since I’m fine with it.

  • Abspy

He and Silver Fox should should totally get together. They would do the whole reporter power couple thing so much better than Connie and Maury did back in the 80s.

    • Elizabeth

Wow… only 4 comments until this one showed up.

    • Rush

So THIS is the CNN anchor Rachel Maddow was talking about?

      • jmo

Nah, it’s gotta be AC he was referring to.

    • Fishpaw

Yeah but I hear Anderson is into Latin men.

      • Anderson

        Ay, papí.

      • Dennis

@Fishpaw; and Don Lemon is into white men. His lover is a white CNN producer.

  • JavaHUT

I always knew. Theres been rumors for years. I’m glad he came out more should!

  • Sadie

I already thought Don Lemon was a man of great talent and integrity and now I have even more respect for him. A true role model.

    • AllieBoBallie

      Ditto!

    • Anderson

      Sadie = Don Lemon.

  • Al

Is he trying to send a message to Anderson Cooper with the “you’ve got to be honest” quote?

    • Mark

I doubt it. It’s a well-known fact Cooper is gay. Everyone knows it. No one cares that he doesn’t want to talk about it except those obsessed with other people so they can be distracted by how much they hate their own lives. No one HAS to talk about anything.

      • Hermione

I thought cooper was married?? To a woman.

      • Jason

No way. He has a boyfriend. Use the Google and you’ll find pics of him and his boyfriend on vacation.

      • me

I heard that Anderson Cooper had it written in his contract with CNN not to discus his sexuality. But he lives and openly gay life, it’s just never reported.

I wonder if he’ll come out when he starts his new daytime talk show. Hope so.

    • Kat

I wondered that too, but then he acknowledged that you can’t push someone to come out, that they have to do it in their own time because it’s so personal. (And then he implied that the more people who come out, the greater the chance of preventing gay teen suicides, so…that’s potentially a message to AC, I guess.) Anyways, I really don’t care about Anderson Cooper – it’s pretty well accepted that he’s gay and not especially trying to hide it. He just doesn’t talk about it. I think that’s a perfectly valid way to handle something that is basically very private, very personal business. I HATE when people try to force other gay people into coming out before they’re ready, especially when it involves public shaming (as opposed to a private conversation between close friends). So I’m glad this guy didn’t specifically call out AC.

      • wakeforce

What happened folks who like to imply that certain reality-show contestants are really gay? There have been rumors about Jake and Brad Womack being secretly gay.

    • mickey

Everyone already knows Anderson is gay. Why do gay people feel they need to announce it anyway. If you live your private life the way you want thats all that matters. Straight people don’t announce their straight.

      • wakeforce

        What happened= what about.

      • Nikkivap

Gay people come out because society calls for the basic asumption that we are all straight people, though things continue to get better in the area of gay acceptance. Gay people come out in an effort to claim themselves, to stop lying to themselves and others… To get to simply live their lives as they were born to live. Maybe one day I will not be asked the question of whether I am a lesbian because it does not matter

      • AdamA

Straight people absolutely, positively do announce that they are straight. Every day. Straight celebrities may not alert the media the same way a celebrity who is coming out might, but that is because of the expectation of straightness we have for movie stars, news anchors, etc.

      • MJ

Because it is just assumed that people are straight unless they identify themselves as otherwise.

    • Alan

How could he not be? I take his comments to be a very VERY thinly veiled “nudge” at Anderson to follow his lead.

      • MASTER

dayyzz on May 29, 2008 great pacmony, definitely helped me with my credit score. If you need help improving yours you should check out high rise credit consulting.

  • Belle

Great! Another cutie who plays for the other team! Must the gays have all the cute ones? LOL. His personal life is none of my business. Bravo for him being brave and coming out. And yes, I could totally see him and Anderson (another I had a crush on) together.

  • Arthur Tweedle

    Where did he go to?

  • lauren

i was shocked to see that he is 45! looking good!

    • Black dont crack

who cares that he’s gay. I watch the news to hear news. I dont care if they are gay or not. But yeah Black dont care. He looks excellent for 45!

      • curious

Don looks great for 45 years old, but I think he is lying about his age (I think he is 35 years old). And he is great at his job too.

    • Alan

I am more surprised and shocked that he’s 45 than that he’s gay!

    • Hermione

Shutup! He’s 45?!?! No way– he looks 30. Damn! Keep doin what your doin Don!

  • JPX

Good for him! It’s 2011, people should be able to come out without worrying about the opinions of people who embrace Bronze Age mentality (i.e. religious nuts).

    • Monica

      Wow you sound really tolerant

  • Monique RL

AHHHHH He was my boo… How many more are there… there are no more men. I can’t take it. These are the last days. Romans 1

    • Matt

      Oh, please…get over yourself.

    • Artur
