'Bones' EP Stephen Nathan talks finale's big Brennan twist, teases season 7

SPOILER ALERT! If you haven’t yet watched the Bones season finale — or been spoiled by a Canadian fan who saw it a day before it aired in the U.S. — then stop reading now. Executive producer Stephen Nathan phoned EW after the East Coast airing to talk about the real change in the game…

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: So I just spent five minutes yelling “WHAT?” at my TV — in a good way. I can’t believe Brennan is pregnant. Some fans are worried that because Angela used the word “dream” in conversation with Brennan, Brennan’s conversation with Booth was just a dream. But she really is pregnant, correct?
STEPHEN NATHAN: Absolutely. This is not a dream.

Would this be happening now in the story if Emily Deschanel hadn’t become pregnant in real life?
Yes. This was something that we had been discussing even before Emily found out she was pregnant. It’s very difficult to find a way to deal with two characters who everybody knows should be together without embracing what everybody calls the Moonlighting curse. We had to find a way to keep the integrity of those characters intact, and yet move them along because you can only wait so long. So we wanted to avoid that part of the relationship where you first get together and the fresh glow of love, and you’re sharing dessert, and you’re overly polite. We didn’t want to do that. Booth and Brennan have disagreed about fundamentally everything — except each other — for six years. That will continue. Their characters will remain the same: Booth and Brennan will have completely different ways of dealing with the pregnancy, completely different ways of dealing with where their life goes from here. Booth is the marrying kind as we know, and Brennan is not. Where are they gonna live? How are they gonna raise the child? How are they gonna continue to catch murderers together when they have a baby hanging around? So all of these issues will be dealt with in the way that they’re always dealt with — from opposite sides. The ultimate pragmatist meets this romantic who has faith that everything will be worked out as long as you look at it the right way. These are issues that won’t die. We hopefully have found a way to continue what everyone loves about Bones while really kicking it up a notch and adding a whole new set of complications now that these two people actually find themselves together.

Do you anticipate a time jump when the show returns in the fall?
It’s not gonna be two weeks later. We’ll see them a little bit further along. Exactly how far along remains to be seen. We’re working that out now.

What was the time jump between Nigel-Murray’s death last week and this week when she told Booth that she was pregnant?
It’s probably at least a month.

Did they sleep together just that once, or have they been sleeping together since that night?
I think that’s up to every viewer. I have my little feeling about it, but I don’t want to impose my opinion on that on anyone.

After last week’s episode aired, some fans felt cheated that if there was a real love scene, we didn’t get to see it. Will we ever get to see that moment, or will we just move forward?
Well, we’ll now see them as a couple — whatever a couple means to Booth and Brennan. [Laughs] It will be that unique couple. It won’t be what you expect.

Another question fans had is the significance of 4:47, which we’ve seen on clocks in the season 4 finale, the season 5 finale, and last week’s episode.
It’s just a little consistency that we try to string through the series, just [to mark] important moments: 4:47 was when they slept together in the alternate reality, and 4:47 was when she walked into the bedroom last week. So, you know, I guess it’s our little smoke monster. [Laughs] It’s Bones‘ stab at being Lost.

Moving on to Angela and Hodgins: watching the finale, I was like, “She really should have been training someone to take over for her during her maternity leave.” But if you do that little time jump, you can skip over that as well.
They’ll be back to work. Bones is still Bones. We’re still gonna have gruesome murders and find the killer. That’s still always the main thrust of the show. We’ll follow their lives and follow the progression of relationships, but that’s always gonna be the backdrop against killing people. [Laughs] The babies will definitely factor in the show. Every week? I can’t imagine. But it will be a part of their lives. We’ve known these people for six years. We’ve seen them grow. This is what happens when people this age get married. They have children and their lives progress and evolve, and we’ll see a part of that while we’re, you know, tearing the flesh off of a horrendously decomposed body.

I know The Finder will sub for Bones at some point next season to allow for Emily’s maternity leave. Do you know how many Bones episodes we’ll get next season?
We’re gonna do as many episodes of Bones as we possibly can. There are realities that we’re dealing with: Emily’s going to be having her baby and taking some time off to enjoy that moment, as she should. And then when she comes back, we’ll do as many episodes as we possibly can. We have a number we hope to achieve, but we just don’t know. Those things are a bit up in the air.

Last question: What would you like to say to fans who are weary of the show bringing a baby into the Booth and Brennan dynamic?
It’s not like Alf has come into their lives, it’s something real. We want that to affect the show, but it’s not gonna be a show about having babies. It’s not Parenthood. I’m sure there are gonna be some viewers who are upset. “Oh, the baby’s gonna do this and do that.” A lot of viewers always make up their mind on how we’re gonna ruin the show before it happens. [Laughs] And hopefully we will disappoint those viewers. And the viewers who have faith that we’ll be able to take the show into new territory well, we hope we won’t disappoint them. We’re very, very excited about being able to do the show that we love doing, but do it with fresh eyes.

    This is going to be extremely interesting. Did anyone else squeal when Booth cracked a smile?

    • Taylor

      Total X-Files copy the last two episodes.

      Chemistry non-existent compared to hot, hot finale for Castle and The Good Wife.

      • B in big D

        Could not agree more!

      • Tina

        You almost made me choke on my drink. No other two characters have better chemistry than Booth and Brennan. What David and Emily have is unique on TV.

      • melita

        castle really ?? when do they have any moments
        the kiss was hot i agree
        but b and b are awesome
        they have so many eye sex moments i cant even count
        and a very deep emotional attachment

      • Jodi

        You blasphemy sir! Booth and Bones are the only couple who have come even CLOSE to touching Mulder and Scully’s chemistry. Yes, it sucked that we didn’t find out until the 2nd movie that they had been together a long time as a romantic pair, but their chemistry was undeniable. Booth and Bones are the same way.

      • Chris

        I couldn’t agree more…sigh…

      • Sue1

        Your opinion, of course, Taylor, but I think they Have incredible chemistry, possible the best TV couple ever.

      • Brittany

        Castle’s finale was AWESOME. Castle and Beckett’s chemistry is unbelievable. When Castle said, “I love you” I was sold. Can’t wait to see how the next season begins.

      • Dave

        Anybody else find it odd how in the finale there was zero talk or emotion of the guy who was killed in the previous episode?

      • Shawn

        I think the final was a let down. They acted so distant the whole episode. Not like a couple that just slept together. I hate that she is pregnant because it force the relationship forward to quickly.

      • Peter Bishop

        The reveal next season will be that Booth has butt cancer, will spend the rest of the season passing foul and offensive gas, but it will allow him to solve crime. Then he will poo and pass away, Bones will eat some in grief – totally Mulder/Scully, Romeo/Juliet

        ~~~~~~~~
        —-I did! I was so nervous when she told him. But then, that smile….I melted…
      • Diva D
        I can’t believe that after 6 years we didn’t get so much as a kiss and suddenly they are pregnant. I have never seen a promise in writing so horribly undelivered. The writers should be slapped for that. I get that they don’t want to drag out the whole new couple gushiness, but seriously one good kiss so at least we had a hint of the fact that they migh possibly have gotten together off camera? LAME cop out. Don’t know if I’ll keep watching if they are going go so extremely the other direction with the romantic element.
        In contrast Angela and Hodgins were adorable about their baby and very poignant.
      • Heather
        Hey Dave,
        Micheal Staccato VINCENT Hodges
        Mr. Nigel-Murray’s first name was “Vincent”. Duh. There is the talk about “the dead guy”.
      • BrianFromTheCape
        Quite possibly the best romance the T.V screen has ever seen. It gets my vote. They have grown as best friends and trusted confidants, all the while looking at each other with a gleem in their eye. It’s been nothing short of brlliant writing for brilliant actors who have pulled it off through 6 seasons perfectly. Couldn’t be any more chemistry between two people — you just have to look in their eyes!
      • Kayla
        i disagree about the whole baby forceing the relationship to move forward too fast. they are complete oppisites. She already confessed she loved him, and at one point he did too. She wanted to have a baby last season and wanted it to be his at one point. so it was enevitable that they would hook up at least once. and if they went into a typical relationship at this point the series would probably end. so im sure that its going to be a intresting and great next season. and i wouldnt forsee bones beiliveing that just because your knocked up you have to be with the person.
    • Midi
      I love it They looked so happy can’t wait for the fall!!!!
      • YMa
        Squee!!! I’m excited for next season, too!
    • Rachel
      YES! I think i woke up my little sister with my scream of joy. Lol. I am eccstatic. Couldn’t stop smiling for like an hour after. =D
      • Brittany
        I could not agree more!!! i rewatched the end of the episode just watching Booth’s reaction to the news. I can’t wait to see what happens!!!
      • Betsy
        Me too=D
      • Ashley
        i re-watched the end so many time, when she said “you’re the father..” he lit up! AAAHHHH so effiinn cute.<3 I could'nt be more happy for them. I just hope Hart Hanson let's them kiss on camera and show there a happy couple with a baby on the way!
    • Frances
      I did! I was so nervous when she told him. But then, that smile….I melted….
      • Sheila
        that is so true i did not know what his reaction was going to be because at first he was in shock and you were like the episode is almost over DO SOMETHING i was so happy when i saw that smile
    • gokarm
      it was more of an awwwww that rose into a squeal. David has such a strong furrowed brow that it’s adorable when he smiles. It completely changes his normal features.
    • Gata
      I had already started getting emotional at the point where Angela and Hodgins found out the baby was fine, so when Booth started smiling, I SMILED too.
      I am not at all disappointed, I am still a fan.
      My problem is the under usage of Tamara Taylor (Cam) what’s up with this, is there some significant budget cuts. These people are hardly ever in the same room together. Do they only work 3-4 days a month while filming???
      • Laurie
        Mmm…I totally agree. Probably the biggest reason why I love this show is because of the strong cast. Definitely would love to see them highlight Cam a little more next season. Probably because of the Angela and Hodgins’ baby that got most of the backstory.
      • JB in GP
        Cam is horrible. I kept hoping the sniper would target her. I would like to see the boss from Season 1 back on the show.
      • Sarah
        I like the boss from season one better also but he was an archeologist. They hired Cam when they moved to murders primarily because the old boss wasn’t as experienced in that field if at all.
    • BJohnson
      Fell in love all over again with Booth when he flashed that smile at her. OMG, I think I rewound that about 10 times. I loved her smile back when she realized he was happy.
      • KL
        Totally makes up for the season 3,4,5 sucky finales.
      • Katie
        I loved the suspense. I was waiting to get a reaction, and my smile was lifted as Booth had a smile. It was so cute.
      • bobbi
        Saw the show late on DVR. That smile of Booth. wow.
    • E
      YES I did!!
    • L B
      still squealling! EEEEEEEEEE
    • Samantha
      I screamed at my tv, with joy. It was like “what”, “oh my gosh”, “I can’t believe this” all in one long squeel! So excited for next season, especially with the confirmation that they are a couple now, yeah!
    • Steph
      I admit I did hear a small squeal slip out of my own mouth when he smiled. I think it’s the perfect end….or should I say beginning.
      • Kim
        I agree…would have loved to see a big hug along with the big smile though. It was sweet to see the relief on her face after his reaction too.
      • Erika
        Mine wasn’t actually a squeal as much as I stood up and jumped up and down and danced. I felt like squealing but I wasnt at home and didnt want to look like a freak. When I got to privacy I called my friend and squealed like a little pig. I was sooo excied!!!
    • belle
      oh you know there were. I cracked a smile since I couldn’t squeal. Shh, babies sleeping.
    • allie
      Yes Yes yes!Loved how he smiles at that.
      I don’t mind they didnt show the sex scene… I mean that happens in EVERY show.
    • bella
      oh yes!!!
    • Billie
      My husband an I have watched the show from start an we’re pleased and can’t wait for season #7 to start. MURDER MAYHEM EXCITMENT &KIDS (great finish) EEEEK!
    • Sally
      totally squealed:)Can’t wait for next season!!
    • Rebecca
      Let me just say… HOLY CRAP ANOTHER BABY for the bones team to spoil xD and how will this effect the rest of the team?
    • melissa
      i yelled really loud WHAT?!!!! AND THEN LIKE FELL OVER
    • Megan
      I totally squealed and did a little dance.
    • kateyp
      OOO. I was watching on my tv and my brother comes in singing and I completely missed what she said. I had to rewind and watch it all again. And then again because I didn’t belive it. But I was so jumping up and down when I saw him smile.
    • Grapes
      Yes! It was AWESOME!
    • rock
      OMG!!! I was like Holy Sh@@! I couldnt believe it althou I had feeling when I saw Brennan asking Angela about it. Yes I was “Booth is happy” FINALLY. I was teary eyed!!!
    • Beth
      Did anyone notice how terrified and uncertain SHE was?? Very un-Brennann-like! Where were “The Dancing Phalanges”?
    • Krysta
      yes i did. My husband actually came running the room. This is great news.
    • joann
      yes and boy was I happy
    • melissa carter
      i know,i saw that soo awsome.love the show.
    • Claudiree
      You Bet!! I cannot imagine my life without Bones!! This is one of the BEST, BEST shows created ever!! being 60 yrs old, I know! Hats off to creator, director, producers, and EVERYONE involved. Including The BEST cast I have ever seen. THANK YOU, and keep them episodes coming!!
    • haily
      OMG i almost cried when i saw booths face light up!!
    • Vic
      I did I did!!!
    • Lex
      OMG YES!!! I looked at his face and I was likee aaahhahhwwww!!!!!!!!!!!!
    • Einzi
      Why did she have a nose job and mouth job?She was such a beautiful woman now she tilts more to the ugly side.why do actors always think they have to get a duck bill and a nose job that does not fit their face?
  • amy
    How can you not show us their love scene? Come onnnnn. I’m not unhappy about the pregnancy story line, but I just didn’t want it to have happened off screen.
    • Hi
      Couldn’t agree MORE!!! I feel so cheated!!! lol (Although very happy!!)
    • elr
      I feel cheated too. Are we going to get any more kisses? I’m not unhappy about the pregnancy either but it is mean to deprive us and show nothing of the night of conception.
    • amc
      I totally agree with you…they spent 6 years building up this relationship for them to just SKIP the love scene?!?
    • Brittany
      I would have liked to see at least a kiss on the night Vincent past.
      • allie
        I didnt mind the no sex.. but yeah a kiss so it was more like omg they are gonna do it FINALLY..
    • fish eye no miko
      It’s like my friend said, “They yada-yada’d over the best part!”
      /I’m sure someone will get that ref…
    • Tiffani
      I think that the assumed sex was better because they already showed them getting down and dirty in the alternate universe of Booth’s mind, so it’s kind of been there done that…plus there was so much raw emotion going on with Brennann thinking Vincent was asking her if he could stay and Booth wound so tight about the sniper that the actual act of sex would have taken away from all that…with all that being said Emily is pregnant and showing so a sex scene for preggers is not going to happen.
  • loli
    DANCING PHLANGES!!!
    • Annie
      Yes! I so loved that; thought it was adorable.
    • sarah d
      You like spatial distortion don’t you!
      • abacon912
        I entirely forgot about that… This oughtta be fun.
    • bella
      omg thats is awsome!
    • Rayd
      Yes! Dancing phalanges! I can totally see her doing that to babyBooth. Yay!
  • Lex
    I am so excited!
    • Aiden
      Same! Regardless they take this storyline, I’m just happy they’re moving forward the Booth/Brennan relationship.
  • Megs
    47 is everywhere!!!!!!!!
  • Feverish
    My daughter & i both yelled “what?” at the same time. I love season finale cliffhanger because i hate how they make me feel. If that makes any sense. Also i have to comment later about “The Mentalist” season finale (another “what?” moment).
    • Liv
      I wish this had been a surprise and hadn’t been spoiled by all of the Canadian fans posting on EW yesterday. It was a real punk move.
      • the beaver
        im a canadian but im disappointed that someone from here would be that douchie! expecially about something so epic… jerks
      • Liv
        Yea, it wasn’t even a Bones related article where I saw the first spoiler, it was a Parks and Rec. Then they posted something about Bones and 90% of the first page of comments were from viewers in Canada that had already seen it. It was disappointing that EW didn’t warn that the comments had spoilers (or even attempt to stop them from spoiling like TVline did). I blame EW just as much as I blame Canada.
      • Mo
        Funny that the article contains a “spoiler alert”, but if you have a couple of tabs open in your browser, the tab reads “Bone pregnant season 6 finale”. Oops.
      • Mo
        Oops for myself too. That should read “Bones”, not “Bone”.
      • K.
        I am Canadian and had no idea it was on a different night up here until I made my way to the Boneyard on Fox’s website last night, so please don’t blame all of us!!!!!!!
  • Nicole
    So now Bones is really trying to mimic The X Files, huh? Oh well, at least DB isn’t leaving the show. I don’t for see season 7 being any better than this dreadful season 6.
    • Feverish
      For see= foresee?
  • sd
    the canadians totally ruined it for me this afternoon in the comments in todays earlier (non spoilery lame canadians. but even though i knew it was coming the smile on booth’s face totally got me. excited to see how they handle this.
    • MJ
      Darn Canadians!!
      • Darn Canadian
        Ya, well, you ruined the American Idol finale for me by not voting for Haley, so quid pro quo darn yankees!
  • Alrisha6
    It’s was just the rigth time. They were around been/no been together, that is going to be really interesting to watch them handle the baby. I’m looking forward foe the scene where everyone find out about the baby, I’m imagining their faces already
    • Mo
      I am excited, and there are a lot of possibilities for this, but I hope it doesn’t turn into something like Friends, where after the baby was born, she seemed to have no bearing whatsoever in anything that was going on (she just came out modeling cutesy outfits now and then). Rachel could do whatever the hell she wanted, when she wanted, have the exact same life as before the baby, and even when she planned to move to Paris or wherever the hell that was, Ross was all about “Rachel can’t go! I’ll miss you, Rachel!” while I yelled at the TV “WHAT ABOUT YOUR DAUGHTER?! WON’T YOU MISS YOUR DAUGHTER?! WHERE THE HELL IS SHE, ANYWAY?” Children change their parents’ lives radically, but on some TV shows they just exist to create a plot complication and then they are conveniently forgotten otherwise. I’m not sure why this bugs me so much, except that it seems like lazy writing. I really hope that’s not the case for Bones.
      • tgirly
        Dude! friends was a decade ago! get over it.Although you have a valid point though
      • Tiffani
        What did you expect from a show that hardly ever mentioned Ross’s son Ben after the 5th or 6 th season.
  • squirrellygirl
    I’m sorry – I thought “The X-Files” ended years ago…? BOO on them for not showing us a love scene after six seasons of build-up. Just – BOO.
    • Bob
      Oh, get over it, squirrelly. It’s called building suspense in a show. Did they, didn’t they? And then, BAM, she’s pregnant. Beautifully executed. Bleep Canada!
    • BJohnson
      I got the sex in the dream episode, I can get over it. Maybe not showing it will not have a take on a Moonlighting curse.
      • Sue1
        I agree, BJohnson, we’ve gotten to see them together, and even though it was a ‘dream’, it was actually quite real, wasn’t it. A flashback might be nice, but not necessary, and this is nothing like The X Files. They discussed having a baby together, so this is a natural progression.
  • lindsey
    They better show a flashback. I have not waited all these years to not see them finally get together! It would not have changed the dynamic at all to at least see them kiss!? I am so bummed.
    • Rachel
      they will kiss now. they’re together right? i kinda like that they let whether or not they got together a mystery until this week and hit us with the pregnancy news. it was awesome and i actually don’t feel cheated at all. i feel pretty satisfied with the really cute “bones-falling-into-booths-arms-no-telling-where-this-is-leading” moment. haha
  • Feverish
    Would the love scene looked anything different than the dream love scene a couple seasons back? I have to check my dvds
  • normalheart
    I know I’m in the vast minority, but I’ve watched “Bones” from the beginning as I like crime shows and got involved with the way the forensics team worked together to solve the mystery…but I HATED the romance between Booth and Bones. It was EVERY character’s job to get them into bed together. If it weren’t for that subplot, there was no reason for Dr. Sweets to be in the series. The way the writers have written Bones’ character, she is the dumbest, naive woman to so many college degrees and supposedly the best in her field. Why would Booth fall in love or want to sleep with such a dumb bell? He’s been married with a kid, Bones would make a terrible stepmother for him. Nothing about their attraction to one another rings true. I wish now that they’d cancel the series…it’s like,”Gray’s Anatomy”..EVERYBODY has slept with EVERYBODY…but what about the patients and their stories. Romance between characters belongs on Soap Operas but as shown recently, even the networks and viewers are tired of the sick romantic plots.
    • Feverish
      Booth never married his baby mama oh “person whose watched it from the begining”
      • Feverish
        “who’s” sorry..i hate misspells. Even when i do them.
    • Lauren
      Are you INSANE? Brennan and Parker get along well, he likes her and he’s interested in science and the Jeffersonian. Brennan has grown a lot but she can’t radically change from one day to the next, people don’t change that easily, try to think of someone you know that has changed for better. See? You should be watching other procedural shows if you’re in only for the cases.
    • Fridge
      I think you have to take into consideration that Brennan is very literal and very book smart, but doesn’t have the street smarts. My younger sister is like that. People that don’t know her might think she’s a “dumb bell” because she doesn’t have street smarts and comes across as a little naive at times. However, just like Bones she’s a very intelligent person. I don’t think it’s a stretch that Bones is like that on the show or is at the top of her field. Besides, Hart has hinted that Bones may have Asperger’s, which would make emotional connections difficult. I’ve watched the show from the beginning too and I love the way they’ve handled B&B–albeit somewhat slow at times.
  • Kacey
    Since ED is pregnant in real life, I guessed this pregnancy would happen on the show, but I liked how they handled it.
    • JB
      Exactly.
      The show wouldn’t be able to hide Emily’s pregnancy like other shows can.
  • Alana
    wait… i’m confused… so are they a couple?
    • skylark66
      See that is the problem. If you have to ask if they are a couple, the storytelling failed. It should have been made crystal clear. Too much of this show in played off camera.
      • Sam
        Storytelling fails if it leaves something open to interpretation?!? Totally disagree, some of the best stories are ones that let your imagination run free.
      • Sue1
        Agree with Sam. The story was told perfectly. They are now a different kind of couple than they were before, and I’ll repeat what I’ve said before, they’ve been ‘a couple’ for a long time.
      • Mitzi
        It’s called a cliffhanger.
    • Mellissa
      I don’t see Bones as the type to openly flaunt a relationship. It’s things like the subtle arm link at the end of last weeks episode that make me thing they ARE a couple–just not a PDA, get a room couple.
      • Andy
        I totally agree. I think they are very subtle but it was a definite shift in their dynamic at the end of last week and this week. It was subtle but it was there. I LOVE IT!
      • Betsy
        Yes, you knew she got into bed with Booth last week, but you didn’t know for sure they became a couple until the arm link. It was a perfect episode.
      • Annie
        That’s nonsense. She linked arms with Booth in last year’s finale–after she told him she couldn’t be with him.
        MASSIVE STORYTELLING FAIL.
