Kirstie Alley on life after 'DWTS': Is a Broadway show in her future?

Kirstie Alley may be at the bottom of the leader board going into Tuesday’s finale of Dancing with the Stars, but she’s already got a prize (or two) waiting in the wings: Broadway is calling!

“I was offered a Broadway play,” the actress told reporters after Monday’s show. “I’m not going to do it, because my friends said, `don’t do one if you can’t get a Tony!’  But I am tempted. There a couple I want to do.”

When Alley declined to give details about her Broadway ambitions, a reporter prodded her about some other post-DWTS possibilities — like, maybe, appearing on The Bachelorette? “F–k no! Are you crazy?” she said, laughing. “I would be so f–king mean. Are you kidding me? It would be bad!”

Maybe, maybe not — but that’s a question for another day. Before she does another ABC show, or vies for a Tony, Alley would like a mirror ball for all the hard work she’s done on DWTS. Take those two lifts during Monday’s freestyle dance: To prepare his partner for going sky high, Maksim Chermovskiy tricked Alley into thinking he was doing something else during rehearsals. (Their final dance, like the samba before it, earned 27 out of a total 30 points). “I had pulled my back so he goes, `put your hand here.’ I thought he was going to stretch me out but he had no intention of that. He just started flying me around. And for another one he goes, `how high can you kick?’ And then he goes wooooo (pretends to fly around).

“It would have freaked me out [had he said he wanted to do lifts],” Alley continued. “I have this bizarre thing with height. I’m 5 foot 8, and I have this phobia. When I did Look Who’s Talking with John Travolta, I weighed 114 pounds, and the director goes, `John, pick her up and take her to the bedroom.’ I’m like, no! I’m 5 feet 8! It’s going to be too much. I only think 5 foot 1 girls can fly around.”

As for the cart-wheel, Alley said it was the lesser of two evils. “I wanted to do a hand spring because I wanted to do a hand spring my whole life! But at the last minute I thought, `do you really want to try that during this last week? Because I could land flat on my back.” Good call, girl.

Alley didn’t have any final predictions going into Tuesday’s show, other than how she’s going to be “flat a– drunk during the whole damn” finale. “That’s the way to do it, right?”

We think she was kidding. — With reporting from Carrie Borzillo

LOL. I love her plan to be drunk during the finale. It seems exactly appropriate for DWTS. Anyways, I’ve enjoyed watching her dance, but I do hope she doesn’t win, since the other two have performed better. I don’t find either Chelsea or Hines nearly as compelling as the judges do, but I know they deserve the win more than Kirstie does. Still, much love to Kirstie Alley for her ballsy dancing (she did some crazy stuff for a 60-year-old!), her ability to deal with Maks’ moody and surly style, and her determined and persistent battle to be as healthy as she can be. She’s been a fun presence on the show.

She acts drunk most of the time on the show anyway! I’ve always wondered why she sounds so incoherent every time she opens her mouth. It’s bizarre.

I give her all the credit in the world for going for it the way she did tonight. Even the cartwheel… I’m 20+ years younger than she is and after doing just one cartwheel with my kids recently, I thought I pulled a muscle! I really enjoyed watching Kirstie and she really brought out the best in Maks too – it was great to see him so happy. I think she should absolutely go for Broadway, she’d be awesome!

Kirstie was AMAZING! I can’t believe she was flipping around and doing those lifts at 60 years old! There are 30 year olds who can’t do that! I never thought she deserved to be in the finale but she does! BRAVO!

  • Barack Palin

She would be perfect to be the first woman to play the role of Edna Turnblad in a revival of “Hairspray”.

  • Billl

I could see Kirstie as a dynamite Mama Rose!

  • Dee Jones

I hope she wins for the sake of Max, because he deserves it and he always been a bridesmaid but never the bride, get it? lol

  • Zach

She better have a good career resurgence after DWTS cuz she was the only reason a LOT of people were watching this dull season.

I love Kirstie and have been rooting for her, but I double-cringed at the “don’t do Broadway if you can’t win a Tony!” I know it was her ‘friends’ who said that and not her, but… wow, that’s obnoxious.

I know, that whole sentence is wrong on so many levels, I can only hope it’s a joke.

Kirstie has inspired us all to get out there and move our bodies to stay fit. Combined with a “I’ll try that” attitude, Mirror Ball trophy or not, Kirstie thank you, you’re a winner!

I love Kirstie and have been behind her all the way this season BUT a 60 yr old Bachelorette??? Those are some men I DON’T want to see unless she’d be playing the cougar! She has done a great job and inspired a lot of people to get active b/c if she can do it at 60, then I can damn well do it at 40!

  • Trezza

Kirstie should definitely do Broadway. She’s got the drive and acting ability, and I think she really should keep dancing. It will maintain and improve her physical condition. Imagine how well she could be doing a year from me, if she keeps it up.

Broadway would require a commitment of eight shows a week — no crushing of partners, no missing shoes, no “low blood sugar” excuses. She wouldn’t last through the previews. So if she won’t do a Broadway show unless she is guaranteed a Tony, then no motion picture unless she is guaranteed an Oscar? No television show unless she is guaranteed an Emmy? She needs a reality check — not inflated scores by these judges nor “advice” from other B- and C-level celebrities who enable these delusions… So sad.

    • Beverly

Totally agree. Sometimes I think she’s still on drugs.

  • Beverly

“Don’t do Broadway unless you can win a Tony”. Somehow I don’t believe anyone’s telling her that. Come on, her career has been in the toilet for a while now…something is better than nothing.

  • G8tr

I say give the lady a hand. She isn’t sitting on her backside, eating chips and watching television, and criticizing like the majority of people who post here..she’s out trying to be a healthy weight and exercising…You folks oughta try it sometime..might improve your dispositions.

    • Natalie

Actually, she’s also trying to be a “healthy weight” by crash dieting and depriving her body of enough calories and nutrients to function. She has publicly said that she was taking in less than 1000 calories for the majority of the show while dancing several hours a day. That’s called starvation coupled with that kind of physical activity. Yo-yo dieting and deprivation should not make anyone a role model. I applaud what she has done on the show as a 60 year-old, but her weight loss methods should not be emulated or held up as a role model.

If Ms. Alley will only do Broadway if she can win a Tony Award, then she needs to stay home. This is Broadway, not summer camp where everyone wins an award for just showing up. Her so called friends are idiots. AJ is absolutely right.
