'American Idol': Scotty McCreery's crowning performance -- VIDEO

“SCOTTY WINS!” “SCOTTY WINS!” screamed the giant video screen. Scotty McCreery, the 17-year-old North Carolina boy with the deep voice, is your American Idol, and if this final lacked real suspense, the show made up for it with genuine emotion. Scotty’s crowning performance, the debut of his first single, “I Love You This Big,” seemed to encapsulate his journey, with opening lyrics of, “I know I’m still young, but I know how I feel. I might not have much experience…”

He struggled through the song, inserting aw-shucks chuckles to keep himself together while he embraced his family and the other singers. No one seemed to mind. In hindsight, maybe it’s how a song like this ought to be expressed. Take a look.

  • If You Ask Me

I thought the performance was very sweet.

    • Msflorida

He is a very sweet boy. The rest of the night make me sick to my stomach, with all the vulgar performances by Jlo, Beyonce and GaGa.

      • Strangepork

Vulgar? Are you serious? Either you’re 60+ years old or you have been sheltered your whole life. Get a clue.

      • Billy

Are you kidding? GaGa was the best part of the show. There was nothing vulgar about it. Just fabulousness. I called my 65 year old mother, who loves Idol, after her performance and asked her if she even know who Lady GaGa was. She said, “Yes, your father and I are two of her little monsters.”

      • elizabeth

You and I are on the same page!!

      • Diogo

Grow up. People have sex, people like sex, that’s not a problem.

      • marty

to have lady gaga on the show and jloto send that tye of message to our young people is a disgrace and it was awful jlo a mother of two children shaking her tail in front millons of people is a disgrace I wpould never dom anything that inlater years that would embarass myn children I thought she was better than that

      • Hilda

The show was over the top and I do agree with you. We do need a wholesome Idol, which we got. America got it right.

      • Heidi

Msflorida you made a good point. Sex is being used to sell things………
that’s why Scotty was a breath of fresh air.

      • Sheryi

I agree that Idol has gone to the dogs, except for Scott I WILL NEVER watchit again, clean it up for families, and yes I am 60 plus and my grandkids cant watch this show due to some of those porno acts, and that is NOT worthy of AMer. Idol but should be on MTV where none of our kids were ever allowed to watch. WHEN did poor taste become talent? OMG i cant believe people pay to see those ‘entertainers’, what a waste of money… could be put to better use in homeless shelters and veterans lives! what is left of them….

  • 3reddogs

I found myself crying all the tears he was trying so hard to hold back.

  • deb

    how funny is Jack Black!

    • Msflorida

      He was cracking me up!

    • SallyinChicago

      Jack Black was silly.

  • gene kimbro

im very happy that scotty won =onother one for COUNTRY MUSIC

  • Kat

I’d laugh my way through singing the phrase “I love you this big” too. What a horrible song. I’ll forgive him for singing waaaaay out of tune because it was a super emotional time and he was distracted by hugging everyone (which was pretty sweet)…but I can’t forgive that godawful song. I don’t know what they were thinking, picking that. (Though at least it spawned some joking over at the AVclub about how the song must be about an erection.) I have a hard time believing that many country radio stations will really want to play it. Lauren’s song was way better, so at least from that perspective, it’s kind of a shame she didn’t win.

    • Ann

Yes! That is an awful song!! It sounds like something a 5 year old would say, “I love you this big, mommy” (with arms stretched out), which was exactly the way Scotty sand it on the Tuesday night performance. Awful song. Lol, after reading your comment…yes, I think it is an erection song. I wouldn’t be able to sing it with a straight face.

      • Gran in Can

Your mind is in the gutter Ann.

    • marty

if you listen to the words of the song you will understand the song and what it says just listen for goodness sake

  • Farrah Munoz

    He so creepy!

    • marty

scotty is not creepy he has stayed true to country that is what he is and I love him for that be true to what you are and america liked it to so choke on that

    • JJ

Farrah Munoz I like to know what is not creepy in your eyes or mind.
      I feel sorry for you.

    • Kate from Canada

      He’s a sweetie – I can’t think why you find him creepy.

    • Courtney Jones

He is not a creepy guy. He is a sweet guy. Sincerely, courtney jones.

  • Jennifer flukes

I loved that Scotty won!!! I wish they both could’ve won Lauren was awesome to!!

  • Mimi

    Worst song EVER!!!!

  • patti Escabi

Can not believe AI this time around. All the real talent was voted off, by who, I have no idea and we were left with two yahoos, who have no talent. Let’s not forget the winner. Mr. Alfred E Newman himself. Anyone with half a brain would realize this is a fixed program. Not watching anymore. X Factor he I come.

    • abi

you think American Idol’s a fixed program? news for you. x factors an even more of a fixed show. not sure if you’ve watched british x factor but that show was ridiculously Fixed! American Idols so much better!

  • AC

For the biggest show in the world, you would think that they could hire someone to write an actual good song for the winner. I Love You This Big is something that even Rebecca Black wouldn’t touch.

  • SteveL

Both of them are so boring! I think Scotty is probably the first country boy that has a chance at a post-idol country career. And country is perfect for him and his stuck up judgemental ways. What they need to do is change the vote around. Instead of voting your favorite to stay, vote for the worst to leave. I bet that would correct some of the weird votes.

  • dave j

I was very happy with the final show. A lot of talent from all over. Country, pop, rock, rap, latino it had it all. Great job! Scotty and Lauren what wonderful kids. Its nice to see that there is great kids out there. You have to think if you went to a high school concert and heard Scotty or Lauren sing you would be on your feet clapping. What a great job by both Scotty and Lauren. We should be proud to have great talent like this in America. Talent like this coming from our teenagers. What a wonderful thing.

  • opus

I am very very excited that Scotty won but everyone has to admit that this song is truly awful. Now that Scotty has won despite producers’ efforts to find the worst song possible for him, I hope they will reconsider this song as Scotty’s first single and find something good for him to sing.

    • marty

the song is not awful just listen to it and it has a message to itgive it a chance please people

    • chacha grandma

Obviously is not so awful that it has climbed the charts so fast it has peoples heads spinning. GREAT SONG SCOTTY – LOVE IT

  • asmiralda

Ya, if the those half naked performers, dancing with those kind of movements are not vulgar then I don’t know what are those???? No wonder so many teenagers got pregnant because they thought that those vulgar singers/dancers/performers were their idols.

    • marty

i agree completly it was awaful

      • Hilda

I am with you Marty, nice to read someone else still has values.
America voted for the right IDOL. Scotty will make it big.

  • hill

SNAP! That voice! I have not watched American Idol at all-but that voice-reminds of Josh Turner
