Olivia Munn has joined Aaron Sorkin’s HBO drama pilot, which centers on a fictional cable news network. A source close to the deal confirmed Munn’s involvement in the still-untitled series. Munn, who most recently starred on the canceled NBC sitcom Perfect Couples, already has some experience in the field of fake cable news, with a recurring role as a correspondent for The Daily Show.

Mary McDonnell on 'The Closer' spin-off: 'It would be foolish ... to try to recreate such an iconic character' -- EXCLUSIVE

The Closer spin-off may have been referred to as the worst-kept secret in entertainment this morning at the TNT/TBS Upfront presentation, but the lack of surprise has done nothing to quell fans excitement about the official announcement of Major Crimes. In fact, the show’s star (and Closer’s Capt. Raydor) Mary McDonnell says fans have much to look forward to about the yet-to-be-written project. “It will be similar to The Closer in its gravitas, humor, and its tone. It’s the major crimes world, but exactly how the evolution occurs, we’re not sure,” she told EW exclusively backstage at the event. “I know it’s going to be looking at the concept of justice through a different lens.” READ FULL STORY »

MTV's 'Challenges': Watch the trailer here

When MTV’s newest, Costa Rica-set iteration of the show formerly known as Real World/Road Rules Challenge — now simply called The Challenges — premieres June 22 at 10 p.m. on MTV, viewers will see plenty of familiar faces. Think Wes, Aneesa, and a still-angry CT (who seems to live for this stuff), but unlike past seasons, the 14 male and 14 female contestants will be paired up with their sworn enemies. Check out all the drama — from punched mirrors to plenty of brawls — in the trailer below before it hits MTV later today: READ FULL STORY »

'Castle' creator Andrew Marlowe on finale shooting: 'She was not wearing a vest.'

While Castle fans were weeping over Monday night’s season finale (Beckett! Nooooo!), creator Andrew Marlowe was in Hawaii, oblivious to the emotional turmoil he’d just inflicted upon us. To get back at him (kidding!), EW interrupted the executive producer’s much-deserved vacation (not kidding…) to ask some of our — and your — burning questions.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: I know you’re sitting sea side right now, but have you seen any of the Internet reaction to the finale?
ANDREW MARLOWE: Yeah, I was on Twitter and a lot of the fans were nice enough to leave their thoughts with me on Twitter, so that was very exciting.

I’m not getting the sense that they’re as angry as you thought they might be.
[Laughs] Well, I didn’t know. I knew that I was going to give them something emotionally satisfying, but I also wanted them to be prepared going in that it was going to end on a cliffhanger. But I think that for the ‘shippers, there was some sense of relief that Castle got to say what he wanted to say and that in the argument they were able to put their cards on the table. Then when we get to the final scene, he’s able to admit his feelings for her. So I think there was some really good resolution in that while we had all the other stuff. I think if we didn’t have that resolution, people would have felt a little unsatisfied. READ FULL STORY »

TBS and TNT unveil new shows: 'Closer' spin-off and Eric McCormack drama in the mix

The Closer will officially get a spinoff — Major Crimes, starring Mary McDonnell as Brenda Johnson’s nemesis, Capt. Raydor — as TNT’s breakthrough hit comes to an end with its seventh season next summer, Turner networks announced at its (problem-plagued) upfront presentation to advertisers Wednesday morning in New York. The cable group also unveiled sneak peeks at some of its upcoming new shows: TBS’ The Wedding Band, a promising comedy about just that starring Brian Austin Green, Lost‘s Harold Perrineau (he gets to be funny!) and The Office‘s always-hilarious Melora Hardin; TNT’s big-budget, Steven Spielberg-produced Falling Skies, a drama about a world that must rebuild post-alien-invasion, starring Noah Wyle; wisecracking-lawyer dramedy Franklin & Bash, starring Mark-Paul Gosselaar and and Breckin Meyer; and the possibly awesome, possibly baffling Perception, a drama about a hallucinating neuroscientist who solves crimes, played by a scruffy Eric McCormack. 'How I Met Your Mother' boss Craig Thomas talks weddings, Ted's dating future, and the scene that made the crew cry

How I Met Your Mother fans are likely not yet recovered from Monday’s season finale. I’m not, at least. And after you read our Q&A with executive producer Craig Thomas, in which he talks about the finale and what to expect from next season (Robin and Barney!?!), you’ll probably be left wanting new episodes of Mother more than you already do. Sorry in advance. Hey, at least we suffer through this hiatus together.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: First, that wedding. You’re pretty cruel leaving it there. But I love that you’re going there with Barney. How did you decide that?
CRAIG THOMAS: Well it was really fun this season to see Barney looking forward a little bit. This is a guy who’s kind of trapped in one mode all his adult life of just being awesome and legendary and a horrible womanizer. It meant a lot to him to reconnect with his father and see another possible future, someone genetically related to him who found contentment in family life. It got under his skin a little bit. That wedding is taking place at an indeterminate time in the future that we are being incredibly and annoyingly vague about — but we can’t quite tell anybody exactly when that’s happening. Barney Stinson, for the first time in his life, is looking into the future and going, “Maybe there is something more out there for me than what I’ve done.” So it’s fun to write, and I will say this: The premiere of season 7 starts off at the same future wedding where we learn a little bit more, though I can’t say exactly what we learn cause that one doesn’t air until September. We just learned one half of the equation in the finale, that it’s Barney, and we don’t know who the other person is, but in season 7 we’ll — I can’t say exactly when or how — but we will obviously learn the other half the that equation in season 7. For sure. READ FULL STORY »

'The Voice' gives NBC a Tuesday win

Another great performance by The Voice gave NBC a win on Tuesday among adults 18-49. The singing competition was down 4 percent from last week to a 4.5 rating/11 share (that later time slot doesn’t help matters), but the Peacock still finished with a winning rating of 3.4/9 for the night, according to early results.

Get this: The show also dominated its time slot among persons 6-11 with a 1.9/10. (Guess the later hour doesn’t matter that much after all.) The Voice also was tops among young men and women 21-49 (6.0/14).

The NCIS finale beat Glee in the 8 p.m. hour (3.8/11 versus 3.5/10). READ FULL STORY »

J.J. Abrams talks 'Alcatraz': How a secret document led to Fox pickup, will keep writers from getting 'Lost'

Can J.J. Abrams do it again?

Like some sort of pilot godfather who makes networks a show they can’t refuse, the prolific producer-director has two new shows hitting primetime next season. One, Fox’s Alcatraz, is drawing inevitable comparisons to Lost. There’s another island, another mystery, with Lost scribe Elizabeth Sarnoff running the show and Jorge Garcia on board in a starring role. But you only need to watch Fox’s trailer (below) to know Alcatraz is very much its own series. “The premise from the very beginning is something I knew I would watch,” Abrams tells EW. “And that’s certainly not an arbitrator of what anyone else would watch, but I knew it was a good place to start.”

The show’s details have been kept under wraps until recently: Alcatraz follows a San Francisco police detective (Sarah Jones) who teams with an expert on the prison (Garcia) after a murder suspect turns out to be a Alcatraz prisoner who disappeared from the island about 50 years ago. It seems the killer wasn’t the only prisoner to vanish — or the only one to return. And now they must stop the Alcatraz escapees as they re-enter modern society without having aged — and try to solve the mystery of how this is happening, and why.

“There’s a kind of intrigue about Alcatraz,” Abrams said. “I heard the name and I thought, ‘How could there never have been a show called Alcatraz?’ I liked the idea of a show looking backwards in order to prevent what’s going to happen looking forwards. The idea of the worst of the worst being sent to that place. What happens if they all disappeared one day, and what happens if they suddenly came back and had not aged a day? That notion was so kick ass.” READ FULL STORY »

Power outage at TNT-TBS presentation

Categories: 2011 Upfronts

Oops, this isn’t the kind of message about stability that you want to send to advertisers: Power problems brought the TNT-TBS upfront presentation to a halt in New York today. The network dimmed the house lights in preparation to air some TBS clips but they never played in the Hammerstein Ballroom. The crowd sat in the dark for a minute or two before the house lights came up.

“You know, I love working for TBS,” quipped Conan O’Brien, who was on stage to introduce the clips.

Turner programming topper Steve Koonin then took the stage and kept the crowd in stitches by joking “we’re not changing our rates” while the cabler raced to restore the video. Ray Romano — star of TNT’s Men of a Certain Age — also did a little improv.

The video was restored after 25 minutes. TNT/TBS then released this statement: “A power surge caused a temporary disruption to video elements at the upfront this morning. Turner executives and show talent rose to the occasion and the show continued after a brief interruption.”

A few minutes later, the power went out again during a promo for Falling Skies starring Noah Wyle. When Mark Paul Gosselaar came up to introduce his new dramedy Franklin and Bash, he joked, “Here’s a clip….hopefully.”

Afterwards, Koonin told EW, “I’m actually very proud of today. We’re not the smartest, we’re not the best, we don’t get everything done right. But we care. We are passionate.” – With reporting from Sandra Gonzalez

You know about vampires and werewolves and zombies. But do you know about the succubus?

Syfy is about to introduce you to this lesser known, but definitely intriguing, supernatural entity. The network is adding to its lineup two seasons of a Canadian supernatural series called Lost Girl, starring Anna Silk (The Ghost Whisperer) as Bo, a demon seductress who feeds off sexual energy. Raised by human parents, Bo had no idea she was any different until she accidentally “drained” her first boyfriend to death (hey, it happens).

She hits the road and discovers she’s a member of a group that feeds off human energy, and she must choose between joining the light and dark clans. Other characters include a homicide detective/Bo’s love interest, a human confidante and street-smart survivor, a doctor who competes for Bo’s heart, and a handsome male “Siren” who is the eternal bachelor (and ultimate wingman).
