Is there still hope for 'Locke & Key'?

The producers of Locke & Key aren’t giving up without a fight. Though Fox passed on the buzzworthy pilot that’s based on a comic book by Joe Hill, sources say 20th Century Fox TV is talking to Syfy and The CW about picking up the project.

The latter seems less likely, since the fifth broadcast network tends to skew toward young female viewers and next season’s schedule is pretty locked in at this point. But the project is completely on brand for Syfy, if the economics could make the show work on basic cable. Don’t get your hopes up, though, fans: Making the leap from broadcast pilot to a cable network doesn’t happen very often, and Locke isn’t the only busted genre pilot to approach the cable network. But know there’s still attempts being made to get this on the air.

Jerry Lewis retires as host of MDA Labor Day telethon

Categories: Television, TV Biz

Jerry Lewis announced on Monday that he is retiring as the longtime emcee of the annual Muscular Dystrophy Association Labor Day Telethon. “As a labor of love, I’ve hosted the annual Telethon since 1966, and I’ll be making my final appearance on the show this year by performing my signature song, ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’,” the legendary 85-year-old comedy entertainer said in a statement on the MDA website. “I’ll continue to serve MDA as its National Chairman – as I’ve done since the early 1950′s. I’ll never desert MDA and my kids.”

According to the MDA, Lewis has logged more than 900 hours helping the organization raise money to fund research for treatments and cures for muscular dystrophy and ALS. “It’s time for an all new Telethon era,” he added. “This year’s six hour prime-time Telethon on September 4 will be spectacular, and I’m thrilled to be part of it.” UPDATE: The cohosts for the 2011 show will be Nigel Lythgoe (American IdolSo You Think You Can Dance), Alison Sweeney (The Biggest Loser), Nancy O’Dell (Entertainment Tonight), and Jann Carl (Entertainment Tonight).

Tonight’s episode House is one of the most intense hours of the entire season. As teased in this week’s Spoiler Room, the episode takes viewers behind the medicine and into the personal lives of the docs at Princeton-Plainsboro, which (wouldn’t you know) still have a lot to do with medicine.

But beyond the medicine and blood — and there’s a lot of it tonight — executive producer Greg Yaitanes says the episode “sets up the collisions of events that are about to happen” in the season finale, which airs next week.  READ FULL STORY »

Debra Messing on 'Smash': Similar to 'Glee' because of singing, but that's it!

NBC knows what you’re all thinking: Smash is just a ripoff of Glee, right? Well, star Debra Messing has something to say about that. “I think Glee is extraordinary and original and fabulous,”  the Will & Grace actress told EW after NBC’s presentation to advertisers Monday. The drama will bow on the Peacock’s 2011-12 midseason schedule. “I think Smash is similar in that there is singing, but I think that’s where the similarities end. Glee is a comedy and ours is a drama. And Glee is in a fantastic sort of elevated world and Smash is completely naturalistic, a very real look at life in New York as an actor, producer, composer, lyricist, what have you.” READ FULL STORY »

Yabba dabba do, Seth MacFarlane will finally achieve his dream! The mastermind behind Family Guy will reboot the classic animated series The Flintstones for Fox.

Fox execs made the announcement at the network’s presentation today in New York. The show will go in production this fall for a 2013 launch. “One of the first things I ever drew was Fred Flintstone,” MacFarlane told advertisers. As for his re-imagination, he said the show has to keep up with the times but some things will remain familiar for old fans. “The characters will look the same but the only thing that will change is the stories,” he said. “What’s the [prehistoric] version of an iPod?”

Dan Palladino (Gilmore Girls) and Kara Vallow (Family Guy) will also serve as exec producers.

In case you’ve been living under a rock (d’oh!), The Flintstones follows two hard-working middle-class families living with the “contemporary conveniences” in the dinosaur-era town of Bedrock. The series centers on Fred Flintstone and his best friend and sidekick Barney.

CBS orders two more dramas, a comedy

CBS placed more orders today for fall shows, including a new drama from Robert De Niro and another one that was previously dubbed The Rememberer (thank God, though, the title was changed).

The 2-2, which was previously called Rookies, is from De Niro and follows six NYPD rookies as they balance their personal lives with learning the beat on the streets of Manhattan. It stars Adam Goldberg, Leelee Sobieski, Tom Reed, Terry Kinney, and Stark Sands. Unforgettable features Poppy Montgomery and is about a  female NYPD detective who possesses the special ability to remember everything (because, she’s the rememberer!).

The net also picked up How to be a Gentleman, a comedy based on the book of the same name that follows an unlikely friendship between a traditional, uptight columnist and his rough-around-the-edges friend and trainer.
