HBO renews 'Treme' for third season

Treme

HBO has decided to pick up David Simon and Eric Overmyer’s acclaimed drama series Treme for a third season, sources say.

The pickup comes as a bit of a surprise — the show has averaged only about 1 million viewers during its premiere runs on Sunday night (freshman fantasy series Game of Thrones is doing about 2.4 million).

But HBO is all about having high-quality exclusive content, and Treme is very much on brand for the network.

'Fringe': Exec producers Jeff Pinkner, J.H. Wyman answer fan questions about the finale -- EXCLUSIVE

Categories: EW Exclusive, Fringe

One week after Fringe’s time-traveling, parallel world-bridging, and thoroughly brain melting season 3 finale, fans of the Fox sci-fi series are still steaming with burning questions. Did Peter (Joshua Jackson) erase himself from history? Who took the doomsday machine back into the paleolithic past? And whatever happened to the Blimp Guy that Olivia (Anna Torv) predicted would one day kill her? We culled our message boards for the most frequently-posed inquiries and then presented them to Fringe masterminds Jeff Pinkner and J.H. Wyman. They were kind enough to respond, even if they acknowledged that for now, there’s little they can actually say. After all: There is going to be fourth season.  READ FULL STORY »

ABC picks up Tim Allen comedy, renews 'Happy Endings'

tim-allenImage Credit: FilmMagic Inc/FilmMagic.comTim Allen’s return to primetime is a go: ABC ordered a new comedy that will star the Home Improvement star as a traditional manly-man in a progressive world. The laugher also will feature Nancy Travis, who will play Allen’s “smart and loving wife who doesn’t miss much.” Hector Elizondo will serve as Allen’s boss Ed.

The comedy is titled Last Man Standing and is from the Emmy-winning Jack Burditt (The Mike O’Malley Show, Inside Schwartz). ABC also picked up Apartment 23 (which previously had the rather great but ultimately doomed title Don’t Trust the Bitch in Apartment 23).

ABC also renewed Happy Endings, the freshman laugher that stars Eliza Coupe (Scrubs), Elisha Cuthbert (24), Zachary Knighton (FlashForward), and Damon Wayans, Jr. (The Underground).

Attention 'Murder, She Wrote' fans: Angela Lansbury says she'd return to Cabot Cove! -- EXCLUSIVE

Apparently, I’m not the only one hoping that some day Jessica Fletcher will return to Cabot Cove. So is Angela Lansbury. The 85-year-old acting legend, who spent 12 seasons as Maine mystery writer and all-around buttinski, recently told EW that not only would  she be open to reprising her role on Murder, She Wrote, she’s stumped why no one has approached her about it. The CBS hit show, which aired from 1984 to 1996, was a staple of the network’s Sunday night lineup and a perennial hit with CBS’ grayer, Matlock-friendly audience. But thanks to Lansbury’s plucky portrayal, a cast of recurring New England yokel characters like Tom Bosley’s Sheriff Amos Tupper, and a deliciously twisty rash of murders that always seemed to follow in Fletcher’s wake, the show found a legion of younger fans, too. (Guilty, as charged). READ FULL STORY »

ABC renews 'Shark Tank' for third season

Yes! ABC has picked up Mark Burnett’s Shark Tank for a third season. The show has held up solidly on ultra tough Friday nights this season. And in fact, Burnett tells EW he’s offered to appear on the show next season as a guest shark.

“If we get a season three, I’ll personally go on it — as long as its legal,” the producer said. “I would not be able to know who the people were pitching. When I’m producing Shark Tank I’m kicking myself, why didn’t I have a shot at these ideas.”

Next season may also see a continuation of having other high-profile guest sharks, and everybody seems interested in having Mark Cuban, who was a stand out during his two guest spots this season, continue to participate. Shark Tank airs its second season finale tonight.

Hello Angels: ABC has officially ordered a new version of Charlie’s Angels to series.

Angels, which stars Minka Kelly, Annie Ilonzeh and Rachael Taylor, will land a spot on the network’s schedule next season (likely in the fall, and probably a choice time slot).

ABC cancels 'Brothers & Sisters,' 'V,' 'Off the Map,' more

ABC cancelled a number of dramas today to make way for new ones. Gone are Brothers & SistersV, No Ordinary Family, Detroit 1-8-7 and Off the Map. The latter three aren’t necessarily a surprise; all three freshman dramas had disappointing ratings this season.

Genre fans were hoping V would make the cut for another season, but the ratings just weren’t up to snuff. As for the Walker family, the actors were even ready to say goodbye to their show that first launched in 2006. Matthew Rhys told EW in January that ”we’ve run a lot of extreme stories and big stories, so I personally wouldn’t want to be a writer if I had to stretch it another season.” Brothers and Sisters already aired its finale a week ago. ABC series orders: 'Good Christian,' 'Pan Am,' 'The River'; 'Body of Proof' renewed

Kristen-Chenoweth

Next fall, ABC could look like a whole new network. Not only has the broadcaster just dumped Brothers & Sisters, V, No Ordinary Family, Detroit 1-8-7 and Off the Map, but its adding seven new drama titles.

They are: The Texas-set soap Good Christian Belles (previously titled Good Christian Bitches), the remake of the 1970s hit Charlie’s Angels, the fairy tale drama Once Upon A Time, the 1960s pilots-n-stewardesses drama Pan Am, the soap Revenge, Shonda Rhimes drama about political consultants Scandal, and the documentary-style thriller The River (that’s the one I’m looking forward to the most). InsideTV Podcast: Can Haley win 'American Idol'? Plus: previewing the 'Survivor' and 'Glee' season finales!

She was a permanent resident in the bottom three for the first month of the live shows, but now Haley Reinhart has made it all the way to a different kind of three — the final three! Does the guttural growler stand a chance of beating country crooners Scotty and Lauren? Kristen Baldwin and Annie Barrett join me on this week’s edition of the InsideTV Podcast to discuss and debate the issue. Speaking of debates, Kristen and I get into one final no-holds-barred battle about the recently departed James Durbin. (It’s obvious Kristen simply hates metal and pianos being lit on fire.) NBC cancels 'The Event' and 'Law & Order: L.A.'

I’ll tell you what The Event is not: A second season renewal.

NBC is passing on picking up its sci-fi action-drama for another round.

Though the series about aliens covertly living among us started strongly for the network, it faded gradually in the ratings and, after its winter hiatus, fell below the line. Event averaged 7.4 million viewers and a 2.5 adults 18-49 rating once you add in DVR use, which just wasn’t enough for a costly and serialized show. On the other hand, Chuck just got a pickup.

Meanwhile, Dick Wolf’s attempt to move his franchise to the City of Angels failed, too: NBC has dropped Law & Order: Los Angeles. The show was hastily reworked midseason but the ratings continued to fall.

Also: India-set comedy Outsourced is getting the ax. The show has been trying to prop up NBC’s 10 p.m. hour on Thursday nights.
