It’s official: Ashton Kutcher has replaced Charlie Sheen as the star of CBS’ Two and a Half Men.

Kutcher joins returning stars Jon Cryer, Angus T. Jones, Holland Taylor, Marin Hinkle and Conchata Ferrell on the top-rated series, which will be back on the air next fall. Production starts this summer.

“I can’t wait to get to work with this ridiculously talented 2.5 team and I believe we can fill the stage with laughter that will echo in viewers’ homes,” said Kutcher in a statement. “I can’t replace Charlie Sheen but I’m going to work my ass off to entertain the hell out of people!” READ FULL STORY »

Chelsea Handler's sitcom gets greenlight at NBC

Chelsea-Handler

Are you there primetime? It’s Chelsea Handler, whose sitcom just got a series order.

The project based on her book, Are You There Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea, has been picked up for next season. The semi-autobiographical comedy is about “a 20-something woman who has a very honest and provocative point of view on dating, friends and family.”

Handler will not star in the show, but will be an executive producer. Laura Prepon (October Road) will star.

NBC picked up some other new comedies. The first is Free Agents, a comedy based on a U.K. format about two co-workers who fall for one another. It stars Hank Azaria. And then there’s Bent, a single camera comedy starring Amanda Peet who falls for a sexy surfer dude she hires to re-do her kitchen. Finally, there’s BFFs, a laugher starring Stephen Schneider that’s about a woman and her live-in boyfriend who take in her pushy and distraught best girlfriend.

You want the good news first or the bad news?

NBC’s Chuck has been renewed for a fifth season. Yay!

But: This is will be the final season of Chuck.

The perpetual bubbliest of the broadcast bubble shows has once again pulled out a victory, securing a fifth round that will air on NBC next season. The network has ordered 13 episodes for Warner Bros. The “final season” part is a bummer, but at least the show will get an ending, which is something most serialized dramas on TV never get.

Creator Josh Schwartz tweeted: “What’s the square root of 25?” (playing off, of course, Ashton Kutcher’s tweet about joining Two and a Half Men). Then he added: The passion of the CHUCK fans has been heard again… We are all truly lucky to have the greatest fan base on tv. Thank you. … I will have more details soon… Very happy for the cast and crew.” READ FULL STORY »

Syfy defends canceling 'Stargate Universe'

stargate_unverse

A Syfy executive has penned an lengthy open letter to Stargate Universe fans defending cancelling the show, whose series finale aired last Friday.

“There is literally no one other than MGM who supported it more than we did,” writes Syfy senior vp Craig Engler. “We were the only network who gave the show a try and the only ones who committed to making and airing 40 episodes before a script had been written. We invested tens of millions of dollars and thousands of hours of work over many years making and supporting the show.”

Engler noted the ratings peaked around 3 million viewers (including DVR) shortly after its series premiere, then sagged to hover near 2 million viewers during season 2, when the show moved to Tuesday and then to Monday nights. Fans slammed the network for “erratic” scheduling and accused Syfy of not promoting the show and cancelling it to make room for wrestling. READ FULL STORY »

'American Idol' exit Q&A with James Durbin: 'I'm so proud that I was able to bring a voice to metal' -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

How does James Durbin feel about his unexpected fourth place exit on American Idol? “Sad, relieved, excited, not disappointed at all,” Durbin told EW backstage about 90 minutes after the results show was over. He added, with a chuckle, “Man, only nine other people can say they got fourth place on American Idol. That’s a great way to look at it.”

While he said he felt “strange” when he got up Thursday morning, as if he may go home, he has no regrets about his performances of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” and “Love Potion No. 9″ by songwriters Leiber & Stoller. Instead, Durbin had another surprise fourth place Idol finisher on his mind. ”I know that when people think someone’s safe, you know, they’ll vote for who they think’s in jeopardy so that everyone’s equal,” he said. “But it ends up not working out that way. You get pushed to the bottom. That’s what happened with Chris Daughtry.”

As for James’ biggest accomplishment on the show, that’s easy: “I’m so proud that I was able to bring a voice to metal, you know, to a ‘dying genre.’” He had hoped, in fact, to return to his metal roots for Top 3 week with the song “Rainbow in the Dark” by Ronnie James Dio. And now? “The ball’s in my court. I’ve just got to run with it.”

Check out the full interview below, for James’ reaction to having to sing his swan song in front of his fiancée Heidi, and what the judges had to say to him after the show:  READ FULL STORY »

Ashton Kutcher: The one million dollar man?

kutcher

It’s not close to Charlie Sheen money but it’s still not a bad payday to take over as a replacement: Ashton Kutcher is reportedly in line to earn nearly $1 million an episode to join Two and a Half Men. It’s not clear whether the salary includes any backend profits from reruns but it’s still hundreds of thousands more than what any A-list star would earn to join a show.

The news, which was reported today in the Wall Street Journal, comes only days after it was revealed that Hugh Grant passed up the chance to take over for Sheen on TV’s No. 1 comedy. It’s unlikely that Warner Bros. TV, which produces the comedy for CBS, will announce the hiring of Kutcher before Wednesday when the network announces its fall lineup to advertisers in New York.

On Thursday, Kutcher playfully seemed to confirm reports on Twitter, giving fans asking him about the reports a wink and tweeting “what’s the square root of 6.25?”

'Glee' scoop: Behind-the-scenes of the New York City season finale

We’re two weeks away from the season 2 finale of Glee, but EW is ready to reveal some scoop on May 24′s episode. Glee fans will be thrilled by what the producers have in store for this epic ender, in which New Directions travel to the Big Apple to compete in nationals. Over the course of a whirlwind week of filming in April, the cast and crew shot at various New York landmarks, including Times Square, Lincoln Center, and Central Park. Many of these locations will be seen in a major musical number that finds the cast singing a mash-up of Madonna’s “I Love New York” and Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York.” Co-creator/exec producer Brad Falchuk, who also directed the episode, says that filming in Manhattan allowed for some expansive shots of the city. “We’re [normally] either shooting inside a soundstage or we’re shooting in Los Angeles, pretending it’s Ohio,” he says. “That means it has to get very small. You can’t get too wide because you might catch a palm tree. So being in New York was like, ‘Hey, man — go big and go wide!’”

So what else can fans expect? READ FULL STORY »

'American Idol': James Durbin's final performance -- VIDEO

Almost every season, there’s a shocking fourth place finisher on American Idol. And, last night, James Durbin was the contestant who joined the ranks of Tamyra Gray, Chris Daughtry, and LaToya London by finishing just short of Idol‘s hometown visits. But he still went out with a crowd pleaser — singing Paul McCartney’s “Maybe I’m Amazed,” season 10′s rocker amped up his audience interaction, even planting an adorable kiss on his fiancée. Check out his exit performance embedded after the jump. Warning: Bring the Kleenex.  READ FULL STORY »

Tonight, with the second part of the two-part Community finale, NBC proved that it really is “More Colorful” as the members of our favorite study group painted Greendale Community every shade of the spectrum. Tonight’s episode capped off a sophomore season filled with stunt guest appearances, too many meta gags to count, and an epic episode that began as a Pulp Fiction spoof but morphed into an homage to My Dinner with Andre. In a chat with EW, creator Dan Harmon recaps the madness/genius of the season and teases what’s in store for one of network TV’s most fearless comedies. [SPOILER ALERT]

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY So you ended the season with a bit of a cliffhanger, as to whether Pierce will come back. There’s been a lot of Pierce drama this year—were you building up to that moment all season?
DAN HARMON:
For the last two seasons, with a few rare exceptions, I’ve never really planned anything more than six episodes in advance because I just was never confident enough to do so. In TV, you’re always roughly six weeks ahead of the all-important experience of watching the show along with the audience. It wasn’t until the paintball episodes that we actually talked about ending the story in that particular way.

Ashton Kutcher is winning.

The actor is just about set to return to primetime TV as the new star of CBS’ Two and a Half Men, according to multiple reports.

First rumored earlier today as a potential replacement for Charlie Sheen, it would mark his return to the sitcom world where he first broke through on That ’70s Show. Hugh Grant was in talks for the role, and he could have been a great choice, but the Brit dropped out.

Kutcher playfully seemed to confirm reports on Twitter, giving fans asking him about the reports a wink and tweeting “what’s the square root of 6.25?” READ FULL STORY »

NBC rejects 'Wonder Woman'

wonder_women

Well that was fun (to make fun of) while it lasted. EW has learned that NBC passed on the much buzzed-about Wonder Woman pilot from David E. Kelley and Warner Bros. TV.

Kelley had penned a script that updated the comic book classic to have Diana Prince as CEO of a major conglomerate by day and a butt-kicking Amazon (with a fleet of cool planes) by night. Kelley’s take asked for lots of heart-thumping, contemporary music, and at one point the Boston Legal writer even requested a commercial-free premiere for the pilot if it aired.
