NBC renews 'Parenthood,' 'Harry's Law'

parenthood

NBC solidly performing family dramedy Parenthood is going to raise a third season.

The network picked up the show for a third round, with fellow bubble show Chuck also looking likely to come back for season five.

Parenthood didn’t do as well this season as its first, averaging 6.7 million viewers and a 2.7 adult demo rating including DVR use, down about 21 percent from last year. Still, that’s good enough for NBC, which along with ABC has had trouble filling its 10 p.m. slots in recent years.

The network also picked up the modestly performing Harry’s Law for a second season. The show had a fairly large audience of 11.6 million viewers, but was weak in the adult demo, averaging 2.3.

Also in the current NBC news-pocalypse pre-upfront frenzy: NBC has renewed Chuck for a final season, has cancelled The Event, has rejected Wonder Woman,  greenlit Chelsea Handler’s sitcom and ordered dramas about Playboy and others.

NBC orders 'The Playboy Club,' other pilots to series

Playboy-Amber-Heard

Next season, the Peacock and the bunny are going to get it on.

NBC has picked up the potentially controversial project The Playboy Club to series.

The drama is set in 1963 and centers on the opening of the first Playboy Club in Chicago. The pilot from Chad Hodge raised eyebrows when the cast, which includes Amber Heard, David Krumholtz and Eddie Cibrian, was asked to agree to nudity clause — typically unheard of on broadcast TV. The nude scenes are expected to only be used (if at all) for DVD and international versions of the show.

NBC also gave the greenlight to two other dramas today – Awake is from Kyle Killen follows the simultaneous and parallel lives of a detective who can not let go of any aspect of his fractured family after a horrible car accident (it’s been described as Inception for TV). Besides Isaacs, it also features Wilmer Valderrama and Steve Harris. READ FULL STORY »

Brian Williams in his own NBC newsmagazine?

Categories: TV Biz

This sounds a heckuva lot more interesting than just slapping up more editions of Dateline: NBC is developing a newsmagazine for the 2011-12 schedule that could involve Nightly News anchor Brian Williams. Multiple reports say the project is in the early stages so its unclear whether NBC will be ready to unveil the new show at its upfront presentation in New York Monday.

NBC’s new owners at Comcast are reportedly interested in showcasing the network’s top news talent. And newsmagazines can fire up quickly for fall, especially if a new drama fizzles quickly.

'Vampire Diaries': Daniel Gillies talks Elijah's betrayal (and softening)

Daniel-GilliesImage Credit: Quantrell Colbert/The CWWhen EW first talked to Daniel Gillies last January, he explained that as an actor, he had to make certain guesses about Elijah’s motivations in order to play The Vampire Diaries‘ new villain. As we approach tonight’s season finale (The CW, 8 p.m. ET), it’s a good time to ask: How close was he? “You know, I suspected the ties of family between Klaus and Elijah, and I’m grateful that I went in that direction. I also suspected a deeper relationship and history with Katherine, and interestingly enough, that played out also,” he says. Executive producer Julie Plec did end up revealing that Elijah and Klaus were half-brothers before Gillies had to read it in a script. “She trusted me,” he says. “She didn’t even ask me to keep it under my hat, but I did anyway because I didn’t want to ruin it for the other cast members or in case anything got leaked.’”

Gillies is equally tight-lipped about Elijah’s involvement in season 2′s final hour, but he confirms that we will see him. “It’s furthering this pact that Klaus has made that he knows where the family is and he’ll reunite me. We’re gonna explore that,” he teases.  READ FULL STORY »

Check out the latest promo and a season 3 clip featuring a smart-mouthed Frankie — who’s apparently still pining for Gigi – and his acrylic-nailed mom Carla, who decides to get up in his grill for not calling some gal. Ashton Kutcher is latest rumored Charlie Sheen 'Men' replacement

Is Ashton Kutcher taking over for Charlie Sheen, or are we being punk’d?

Kutcher is the latest rumored name to surface as a possible new star of CBS’ Two and a Half Men, says trade publication B&C. CBS and Warner Bros. are hustling to find a suitable big-name comedic star to replace Sheen since the clock is ticking until the network’s upfront presentation to advertisers next week. If Kutcher lands the role, it would mark his return to the sitcom world where he first broke through on That ’70s Show. Hugh Grant was in talks for the role, and he could have been a great choice, but the Brit dropped out. WB, huddled in meetings readying for the upfronts, had no comment.

Of course they are!

Given how strong The Voice has performed in the ratings, NBC is expanding the talent show to two hours next month and will pair the show with the return of America’s Got Talent.

The Voice will have two-hour live shows starting June 7 following original episodes of Got Talent (which premieres May 31). The show’s one-hour “battle rounds” will continue at Tuesdays at 10 p.m. through May 31, then switch to two-hour live episodes through June 28.

'Community' scoop: Watch Joel McHale and Donald Glover butt heads from tonight's season finale -- VIDEO

You know what they say: It paint over ‘til it’s over. Well, tonight… it’s over. In just a few short hours — at the stroke of 8:00 p.m. ET — NBC’s Community will unveil the conclusion to its two-part paintball season finale. Who will emerge victorious? Who will get splattered? And who will get to the bottom of this ice cream company conspiracy? (Pistol Patty, you looked tasty, but I never trusted you.) Last week, we saw Josh Holloway’s Black Rider shake up the game before getting Pierced. This week, according to series creator Dan Harmon, “the Western motif falls away and an out-and-out war happens. There’s a kind of an epic, wartime, band-of-rebels-against-a-larger-force Star Wars feel to the second one.” All right, enough wordballs. Time for paintballs. Click below to see Jeff and Troy argue over the master plan, take notice of a few folks in the background of the photo above (Cougar crossover!), and then lock in your prediction: How does it all end tonight?  READ FULL STORY »

'American Idol' wins Wednesday, steady with last year

Categories: TV Ratings

Steady as she goes: Fox’s American Idol delivered 22.4 million viewers and a 6.9 preliminary adults 18-49, winning Wednesday night in the ratings. Those numbers are up slightly from last week and steady with the same night last year. In general, Idol ratings this season have retained 95 percent of its strength compared to last season, despite (or because of?) all the changes on the show.

Dead Sitcom Walking Breaking In (7.6 million, 2.4) was flat. Yup, the cancelled Christian Slater comedy drew a bigger rating than Tuesday’s renewed Raising Hope, which is the double-edged sword of having an Idol lead-in — the reality hit sets you up to win but, darn it, you better win.
