'Family Guy' rules on a night of finales

Categories: Family Guy, TV Ratings

The real cartoon characters on Fox were much more interesting than the figurative ones on Celebrity Apprentice on Sunday, as Family Guy finished the last Sunday of the 2010-11 season as the most popular show among adults 18-49, according to preliminary results.

Family Guy earned a 3.0 rating/7 share in the demo — down 3 percent from last season’s finale but still tops among the broadcast competition. It also ruled among 18-34 and teens. The Simpsons finale pulled a 2.5/7. Each 18-49 ratings point equals 1.3 million viewers.

The finale for NBC’s Celebrity Apprentice earned a  2.9/7, down 15 percent from its last season finale and the lowest spring finale ever for the franchise, star versions or otherwise. It averaged 8.3 million viewers.  The Billboard Music Awards showed some signs of life for ABC: It posted a 2.9/8 and 7.8 million viewers. READ FULL STORY »

Claire Danes in Showtime's 'Homeland': Watch the trailer here!

Categories: Showtime

Showtime’s new series Homeland (air date TBD) has a premise that could’ve been a great Tom Clancy novel: A CIA officer (Claire Danes) suspects that a recovered American P.O.W. (Damian Lewis) may actually be an al-Qaeda operative. Judging by this trailer, the show promises plenty of clock-ticking suspense and paranoid drama — no surprise there, since it’s produced by 24 alums Alex Gansa, Howard Gordon and Michael Klick. Our only question: Will they be able to sustain this one plotline for the entire run of the series? Or is this just a jumping off point for Danes’ character as a female Jack Ryan? Check out the official teaser trailer below, then let us know what you think in the comments.

The country crooner chatted with EW.com about his experience on the show, being hit on by Star Jones, burying the hatchet with Busey, and his “hardest task of all,” which had nothing to do with 7UP. 'Game of Thrones' producers on Episode 6: The Eyrie, Catelyn bashing and adding backstory

Categories:

Game of Thrones showrunner wizards Dan Weiss and David Benioff talk to EW about this week’s rollicking sixth episode, how much backstory from the books is too much, and whether fans are right to hate on Catelyn.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Loved the Eyrie sequence. Can you talk about staging that?
DAVID BENIOFF:
Gemma Jackson our production designer did a fantastic job with very little time and budget. The Eyrie is definitely one of our favorite sets. That Moon Door, the level of detail—you see a shot of these two guys turning a wheel, you see the door open, you assume it’s the magic of photography making that happen. But in fact she designed it so the wheel really does open the door. Just like it’s a real working elevator up at The Wall.
DAN WEISS:
The Moon Door was real enough for Jerome Flynn playing Bronn to have fallen through it and nearly killed himself … thankfully, he emerged unscathed.

One character that’s been drawing some online hostility has been Catelyn, perhaps more so than when readers encountered her in the book. READ FULL STORY »

Billboard Music Awards scoop: Ken Jeong to jam ... with Eric Stonestreet?

Categories: Awards Shows, Music Biz

ken-jeongImage Credit: Kevin Mazur/WireImage.comRemember Ken Jeong’s emotional acceptance at last year’s MTV Movie Awards? Yeah, we don’t expect him to get all teary-eyed tomorrow at the Billboard Music Awards. On the contrary, Jeong – who will serve as the host of the kudofest that’ll air live on ABC — is expected to mix things up with a couple of the artists.

Since Jeong fancies himself a “musician,” the star of Hangover 2 will square off against the likes of Nicki Minaj, Keith Urban, Travis Barker, and Cam — er, we mean Modern Family’s Stonestreet at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Hilarity is sure to ensue.

Also at Sunday’s awards ceremony: Lil Wayne will join Mary J. Blige on stage for her single, “Someone to Love Me.” Far East Movement will perform “Rocketeer” with OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder, and will also team up with Snoop Dogg on “If I Was You (OMG).” Finally, Pitbull will sing “Give Me Everything” with Ne-Yo and Nayer.

The show starts at 8:00 E.T. And in case you’ve already forgotten about Jeong’s genius, check out this trailer for Hangover 2. READ FULL STORY »

Laid off TV stars: Who is out of job next season

wonder-woman-3

Charlie Sheen isn’t the only high-profile actor who’s out of job next season.

Networks chased after a slew of stars during pilot season, then left a bunch out in the cold once they decided which series were making their schedule. Among the survivors are Tim Allen (Last Man Standing), James Van Der Beek (Apartment 23), Christina Applegate (Up All Night) and Sarah Michelle Gellar (Ringer). But for every name that made the cut, there’s at least two that are back to pounding the pavement for work.

One of the biggest names left in the cold is Ethan Hawke, whose Fox action pilot Exit Strategy was passed over. There’s still a chance it could get retooled or salvaged, but chances seem slim.

Another big get, Angela Bassett, was expected to make ABC primetime in her police drama Identity, but the network picked up 13 other projects instead. READ FULL STORY »

Ed Asner talks Warren Buffett, Betty White, and the possibility of an 'Up 2'

Categories: Royal Pains, Television

Ed Asner defies all Hollywood rules about aging — specifically the one that says age and the ability to snag roles are inversely proportional. At 81, he’s working enough to make even his former Mary Tyler Moore co-star Betty White a little envious (and he’s hoping to reunite with the equally prolific senior citizen sometime soon as well). To wit: He’s spending this summer appearing as investment guru (and Office finale star) Warren Buffett in HBO’s movie Too Big to Fail (airing Monday at 9 p.m.), shooting a guest arc on USA’s guilty-pleasure hit Royal Pains, prepping a half dozen other movies, touring the country with his one-man show FDR, and even finding time to fly to suburban New Jersey this weekend to star in a play written by a friend’s teenage son. (Seriously. You can buy tickets here.) The erstwhile Lou Grant chatted with EW about all that — and the possibility of reprising the voice role of Carl Fredricksen in a sequel to the 2009 animated gem Up. READ FULL STORY »

Top time-period battles next fall (and who will win)

Categories: 2011 Upfronts
desperate_housewives_good_wife_320.jpg

Right after the fall schedule was announced last May, I posted a rundown of the most intriguing time-period battles and who I thought would win. Been a lot of buzz and fresh intel about these shows since, but I’m keeping my predictions the same — plus adding a several new entries. So here they are, below, and be sure to check the Inside TV blog every morning for the ratings to see how your favorite shows performed (of course, in today’s DVR era, time periods are less important than they were five years ago, but don’t be fooled: The slots still matter — just ask any show that faced off against American Idol, or one that had the pleasure of airing after it):

Who: CBS’ Hawaii Five-0 vs. NBC’s Playboy Club vs. ABC’s Castle
When
: Mondays at 10 p.m.
Verdict: Castle pulled off a surprise victory in this slot by the end of last season against the first year of Five-0, gradually conquering a time period that it always lost to CBS when CSI: Miami was there (Castle was especially aided by Charlie Sheen’s freak out and Two and a Half Men going into repeats — thus weakening CBS’ 9 p.m. hour’s lead into Hawaii). So this is the rematch, with Hawaii bulking up with a ton of guest stars and adding Terry O’Quinn to the cast. Expectations are modest for Playboy Club. Hawaii will go big tonight when Men returns tonight, but in the coming weeks Castle will probably end up slightly on top. And now on Friday nights, it’s Chuck vs… READ FULL STORY »

'The Office' wins Thursday finale ratings showdown

Categories: TV Ratings

Nine season finales aired Thursday night and NBC’s one-hour celebrity-stuffed The Office closer came out on top.

The Office delivered 7.1 million viewers and a 3.8 preliminary rating among the adults 18-49 demographic, rising 12 percent from its finale last year (and only had to cast half of Hollywood to do it!). That beat the finales for Fox’s Bones (10 million, 3.2) ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy (9.6 million, 3.4) and CBS’ two-hour Red John showdown on The Mentalist (13.7 million, 2.7).

The Office was the only finale to post an increase compared to last year’s closer, though. Most ranged from being down a mild 9 percent (Parks & Recreation) to a steep 37 percent (Grey’s Anatomy). READ FULL STORY »

'American Idol' exit Q&A: Haley Reinhart says she's 'feeling at ease' -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

Haley Reinhart, the 20-year-old jazz lover from Illinois who was eliminated from American Idol Thursday night, wasn’t too bummed about her fate. “I’m feeling at ease,” Reinhart told EW in a backstage interview after the show. “You have to take everything in stride, realize what a great thing [Idol] has been, and keep going.” When asked about her favorite Idol memory, Reinhart mentioned pushing the show’s boundaries by singing Bobby Timmons’ “Moanin” with fellow contestant Casey Abrams. “We’re both huge jazz-heads,” said Reinhart, “and I’m glad America actually took it in and liked it.”

Reinhart also addressed her staircase tumble from this week’s performance of Led Zeppelin’s “What Is and What Should Never Be,” pointing out that she had planned to wear platform shoes instead of high heels. “I was nervous about the big stairs, and it ended up being the small stairs,” she laughed.

Check out the full interview below, during which Reinhart discusses why she believes the judges were tough on her and reveals her two favorite musicians: READ FULL STORY »
