Sports czar Dick Ebersol resigns from NBC
Here’s another high-profile departure in the wake of Comcast’s takeover of NBC Universal: The New York Times is reporting today that NBC Sports guru Dick Ebersol resigned today after he couldn’t hammer out a new deal. Ebersol has been with the division since 1989 and was primarily reponsible for securing the rights for all those highly-viewed — but pretty pricey — Olympic telecasts.
Ebersol reportedly denied that he didn’t get along with his new bosses.
It is unclear what Ebersol’s departure means to the future of the Olympics on NBC, and whether Comcast is interest in going after the rights to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, and the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro. Ebersol will stay on the job until June.
Sarah Michelle Gellar talks new show 'Ringer,' returning to TV, and her 'Buffy' fans

We all remember: Buffy saved the world… a lot. But in her new CW show, The Ringer, Sarah Michelle Gellar’s characters are mostly trying to save themselves. That’s right, characters. Identical twins to be exact. In the series, Gellar plays a woman, who, after witnessing a murder, goes on the run and hides out by assuming the life of her wealthy identical twin sister — only to learn that her sister’s seemingly idyllic life is just as complicated and dangerous as the one she’s trying to leave behind, according to the logline released by the network.
For Gellar, who has largely been absent from the television landscape since Buffy the Vampire Slayer went off the air in 2003, playing two characters was just about the only thing she hadn’t done in her seven seasons on the UPN/WB show. “With Buffy, I got to do so much,” the actress told EW this morning at the CW Upfront presentation. “So what do you do next? What do you do that an audience hasn’t seen you do? But bringing to life two characters and making them different, but at the same time interesting, and [showing] the similarities is definitely a challenge I’ve never done.” READ FULL STORY »
'One Tree Hill' will end next year

It wasn’t entirely unexpected, but CW topper Dawn Ostroff told advertisers today in New York that One Tree Hill will return to the network’s midseason lineup next year for its final 13 episodes. It will be the drama’s ninth (!!!) season.
Miraculously, the long-running series was given the greenlight for another year — a pretty remarkable feat, since the drama has set some sort of record for having been a bubble show every season for the past eight years.
The CW will attempt to lure Chad Michael Murray (Lucas) and Hilarie Burton (Peyton), both of whom left in 2009, back for the show’s final episodes.
'The Mentalist' season finale tonight: The word is 'game-changer.' Who's your pick for Red John?

CBS’ hit drama The Mentalist, starring Simon Baker as tragedy-marked super-sleuth Patrick Jane, reaches the end of its third season this evening. This is about the time in the life of a successful television enterprise that showrunners like to shake things up with a move that profoundly marks the characters and even fundamentally alters the storytelling m.o., at least for a season or two, all for the sake of extending said life of said TV enterprise. See: Fringe, which concluded its third season a couple weeks ago with a time-travel twist that may have created a whole new version of history for the writers to explore. Also recall: Lost, which concluded its third season by abandoning flashback storytelling and introducing flash-forward storytelling. READ FULL STORY »
New 'True Blood' promo: 'Oh great, now I have to deal with witches?'
Summer is coming. And with it, more promos for True Blood‘s fourth season, which begins June 26. The latest shows the new coven of witches in town. If they can control the dead, then they can control vampires, Bill says. Did they make him put on guyliner? (Not complaining, totally hot.) We also see that amnesia-stricken Eric will still have some bite this season. And that, as Pam says, Sookie may have to choose to be somebody’s if she wants to be, period. Oh, and there will be plenty of sex on this show, as always. Watch it below. READ FULL STORY »

(Not that Kutcher went to the party, mind you; he hit the carpet then scooted.) Everybody’s all smiles… What do you think? Is the idea of Kutcher on this show starting to gel for you? Or is it still weird? READ FULL STORY »
The CW unveils 2011-12 fall schedule
And finally, we have The CW. Today, the fifth broadcast network unveiled a fall schedule that includes pairing Sarah Michelle Gellar’s new drama Ringer with the sudsy 90210 on Tuesdays (the same night Buffy the Vampire Slayer aired on during much of its run) and shoving Nikita to Fridays with Supernatural.
The lineup also introduces Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage’s new medical drama Hart of Dixie on Mondays, pairing the show with their other CW program Gossip Girl. Reality show H8R, where celebrities try to win over their harshest non-fans, is on Wednesdays. And supernatural series The Witch Diaries The Secret Circle airs on Thursdays. One Tree Hill returns midseason. What’s a strong trend in this schedule is that all the new scripted shows are getting supported time periods, with the veterans having to do the heavy lifting to launch the nights.
Here’s your schedule, below (and here’s the schedule for the other four broadcast networks). READ FULL STORY »
Watch CBS fall trailers: 'Person of Interest,' more
Unlike some of its rivals, CBS only has a handful of new shows (the network’s entertainment president uses the term “luxury problem” every year), but there’s a couple ones here that got a very positive reaction at their presentation to advertisers today. Check out these previews of J.J. Abrams’ latest, Person of Interest, as well as new comedy 2 Broke Girls. Plus there’s the very CBSsy dramas Unforgotten and A Gifted Man, plus the comedy bromance How to be a Gentleman.

ABC announced today that Garin Wolf was named the head writer of General Hospital, effective immediately. “Garin is a talented writer and storyteller who has been a part of the General Hospital family for nearly 15 years,” said Brian Frons, ABC’s daytime president. “His in-depth knowledge and adoration for the show’s legacy will help make a smooth transition and an immediate impact on story. I’m sure he will succeed in taking General Hospital to new heights as he develops characters and storylines that will engage and thrill our viewers.”
Wolf replaces Robert Guza, Jr., who had been with the ABC soap on and off since the ’80s. Wolf has been on GH since 1997.
GH is currently up for 21 Daytime Emmys — the most of any sudser this year.

Ashton Kutcher takes CBS stage: 'I won the lotto'

Welcome to CBS, Ashton Kutcher: The “actor, producer and social media mogul” was officially introduced by CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler today at the network’s upfront presentation in New York. Kutcher — wearing a very casual beige jacket and slacks – said it was “awesome to be there” and “for some reason they are letting us talk.” (See the first photos of the cast here.)
Kutcher, as well as Jon Cryer and Angus T. Jones (both of whom showed up in conservative, dark suits) came out on stage while snapping to the comedy’s theme song. But when Kutcher didn’t get the “men men men” lyrics just right, he quipped, “I’m still learning my lines.” READ FULL STORY »
