MTV Movie Awards a hit with teens

Ratings for the MTV Movie Awards are in and — no surprise, it was a hit with teens. The show earned a 5.4 rating in the key demo (that’s a cumulative number across MTV, MTV2, VH1 and Logo), and an 8.3 rating among female teens. It was MTV’s largest audience of teens since 2004.

Among total viewers, it averaged 4.5 million.

Not all of those little pimple poppers stuck around for the Teen Wolf premiere, but the drama still pulled a pretty decent number. Part one of the two-parter earned a 2.1 rating among persons 12-34, and retained 68 percent of those teens with a 3.7 rating. Part 2 airs tonight.

Of course it was a hit with teens. MTV has alienated the rest of their original demographic.

Actually, Teens have always been their target demographic. It may not seem that way because of some of their shows but that’s a whole different story. Look at their jersey Shore numbers, their 12-17 demographic ratings are 3x higher than the 18-49 demographic. It’s quite sad really. People are way too quick to judge todays teen generations, when they should blame parenting and networks like MTV who promote such behaviors.

    • @Monica

Teens have always been their main demo. The people who keep complaining about this are most likely former teens themselves for whom MTV has no use anymore. And I say this as a person in my late thirties. Once upon a time, I was their target demo, but not anymore, and I’m fine with that.

Is 12-15 EW’s key demo? It seems like the only trash they cover these days (effeminite vampires, jersey shore, miley cyrus) is for slow teens.
No wonder this rag is dying.

My question is, why is MTV giving movie awards in the first place? They aren’t a movie channel, they’ve only made a few tentative forays into producing, they don’t show movies. And they (apparently) don’t even consider the vast majority of titles–just those perceived as “teen movies.” It doesn’t get much more shamelessly crass than that.

The Academy Awards don’t produce films. Neither does the Foreign Press Asociation (Golden Globes), neither do all the film critics awards. Should the Oscars only reward other award shows? Should the GGs only reward reporters? Should the critics groups reward only critics?

    • Veronica Mars

Are you simple? MTV has always been shamelessly crass. It’s a kiddie channel. If you’re not a child, change the channel and stop whining.

I’m just sad to see the ratings were so high for such a dismal, boring telecast. Jason Sudeikis had some legitimately funny lines, but the whole thing was a waste of time. If Twilight was in the category, Twilight won. Twilight was the Lord of the Rings of the MTV Movie Awards, except once upon a time movies like LOTR actually won MTV Movie Awards too. I remember when Nicole Kidman actually won two awards for Moulin Rouge, including Best Kiss, because it was HER year, even though she was in her mid-30s. Now Natalie Portman legitimately is a younger starlet and won the Oscar and every other major award but couldn’t get the blasted MTV. There should be some filtering of the nominees so that poorly reviewed films like Twilight, which also win RAZZIES, are not nominated. We already have the Teen Choice Awards and Kids Choice Awards. What happened to award shows for middle-aged America with semi-evolved taste? (And before you say People’s Choice, think about how excessively middle America they are.)

I think it will honestly get better once Twilight, Harry Potter and the Transformer movies are done. I actually like Harry Potter too but once it can go to “cool” movies that don’t get recognized by the Oscars and not the crazed movie series like these…
There were some great stars there last night. I disagree though, Jason’s lines were so canned and his piano thing was a rip-off of Jimmy Fallon and Ed Helms. He didn’t do or say anything original.

The MTV awards are always fun. They push the limits. I love Twilight and most particularly i love Rob Pattisnon. For me the show was fantastic and I am quite a few decades over the MTV teen demographic. As for Razzies, they have to nominate something they know will get a reaction and picking on someone as popular as Rob and or Kristen gets people interested. Their performances were no where near worthy of a Razzie this past year. There were many, many far worse. Don’t forget Sandra Bullock won a Razzie the same year she won an Oscar. It is all a matter of personal choice and personally, I chose Twilight Eclipse over most of the other films I’ve seen this past year.

      • Zach

Yeah, and Sandra was pretty bad in All about Steve, so the award made sense! Of course they’re going to go with high-profile stars and not student films – what do you expect? I respect your comment, but it seriously makes me question your taste in film.

  • Rolo Tomasi

Actually I was a teen once, but when I was, actually good movies won awards.

    • Dave

Very true. Great movies used to be awarded at the MTV Movie Awards. Some of them may not have been Oscar-level films (altough some of them were), but they were still good movies. Pulp Fiction, Seven, Scream, Lord of the Rings, There’s Something About Mary, The Matrix, etc. The Twilight craze over the past few years have turned this into the most pathetic awards show.

  • Carrie U

This article only tells half the story…spinning it to make the Twilight Awards look good. It doesn’t mention that total viewership is down from last year.

    • Veronica Mars

Lynette Rice is the most disingenuous shill on the entire staff. Yellow journalism and pom pom waving. Awful.

  • The Other Guy

I’m ashamed of my fellow teenagers, that’s all I can say.

  • deedeedragons

The MTV Awards were a hit with teens?
…. and in other news the sky is blue.

  • Sia

This Twilight hate is getting old! Come up with something different please.

    • Veronica Mars

Should we hate on fat ugly pigs like you instead? I don’t think that would be very nice.

      • bp

wow, i really hope you are 12 to attack people the way you do.

  • Dani

Can’t teenagers like more “adult” cartoons again? Now those were fun and interesting.

  • Tony Fynan

Isn’t it interesting that a lot of the movies that get nominated or have won in the past are ‘R’ Rated? Most of MTV’s demographic is under 15 years old? What gives?

  • Shamus N.

MTV — rewards bad behavior and bad movies.

  • rap music

I do consider all the ideas you’ve presented in your post. They’re really convincing and can definitely work. Still, the posts are too brief for starters. Could you please prolong them a little from subsequent time? Thank you for the post.

Its such as you read my thoughts! You seem to understand a lot about this, such as you wrote the guide in it or something. I feel that you just could do with a few percent to power the message house a little bit, but other than that, this is fantastic blog. An excellent read. I’ll definitely be back.

  • hastahaneler

Its like you learn my thoughts! You appear to understand so much about this, such as you wrote the guide in it or something. I think that you just can do with some percent to drive the message house a little bit, however instead of that, that is magnificent blog. A great read. I will certainly be back.
