Daytime Emmys: Who should win! Who will win!

It’s Emmy time this Sunday, soap fans! Though the TV Academy also uses the annual ceremony (airing live on CBS at 8 p.m. ET) to honor game and talk shows, the real competition lies in the drama categories. Will James Franco’s much-ballyhooed appearance on General Hospital help the ABC soap take the top prize? Will the soon-to-canceled All My Children earn a sympathy trophy?

We asked some on the industry’s top soap experts — Editorial Director Stephanie Sloane and Managing Editor Editor Gabrielle Winkel of Soap Opera Digest/Soap Opera Weekly, and Soap Opera Network  Co-founder Xavier Toups — to pick who should win and who will win in the major categories.

OUTSTANDING DRAMA SERIES
Nominees: All My Children, The Bold and the Beautiful, The Young and the Restless and General Hospital.
Who should win: Sloane says GH, Toups and Winkel says B&B.

Who will win: Everyone is in agreement — the CBS half-hour (pictured, left) will win its third consecutive Emmy. Toups explains it best: “The show submitted two episodes where Stephanie, who was recently diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, finds her way to L.A.’s Skid Row and sees how people are living in a poverty stricken area. Stephanie devotes herself to helping those who are living there.” Social change! See: Winners circle.

Who should win: Sloane says Stafford; Winkel says Wright, and Toups picks Morgan.
Who will win: A split! Sloane still goes with Stafford while Winkel thinks Flannery. Toups? Morgan.

  • Hoboken Breaking Bad

I have never even seen General Hospital, but the actor pictured for Supporting Actor, Jonathan Jackson is a dead ringer for Breaking Bad’s Jesse Pinkman played by Aaron Paul.

Any General Hospital fans that also watch Breaking Bad? Agree?

    • Heather

I watch both and I can only see it a little bit, but I think I knew who Jonathan Jackson was for so long it separates them pretty far in my mind

      • boy meets world

I only know him from his appearance on Boy Meets World, when he should have started dating topanga, that way Cory could have been with Lauren and the show would have been a lot better

      • Captain

        Topanga and Cory are soulmates.

    • vxcb

I love my boy friend, a nice black man.

i met him via —-Black’ White ‘Fli rt. C óM—- the most effective interracial da-t_ing s i_te. If you are tired of dat_ing sit_es that don’t work, don’t hesitate to check this one !!

You will meet your “milk” or “chocolate” soon !! d

    • Flip

      TRICIA CAST deserves to win!!!

    • Lyndsey

I watch both (will the new BB season ever start?? LOL) & they do indeed favor! Though their characters are worlds apart.
I’ve watched Jackson since he was just a kid on GH & even then he was the only one who could really hold his own with Tony Geary (Luke)! He definitely deserves to win this year with the “Jake” storyline (his dad accidentally ran over his 4 year-old adopted son while driving intoxicated)!

      • Captain

Agreed. Although I don’t know if that was filmed before the submission deadline. Was it? If it was he DEFINITELY deserves it. His performances were amazing and it was probably the only time I wasn’t missing Greg Vaughan. If he doesn’t win its a travesty.

    • Tim

I watch both and I agree with you Hoboken.

    • bootsycolumbia

I watch both and I don’t see the resemblance. Both are good actors, though.

  • Kevin

How long Y&R and B&B will last? Will season 40 of THE PRICE IS RIGHT be its last ’cause contestants are indeed CHARLIE SHEEN wannabes and could it be the end of GENERAL HOSPITAL now that Katie Couric has her own talk show next year on ABC?

    • Matt

If you think Price is Right is going to end, you’re smoking some seriously strong crack. Run along now, the adults are having a conversation.

    • WTF?!?!?

All the networks are scrambling for Oprah’s audience so talk shows are in and soaps are out…even Oprah wants to save the All MY Children!

I just can’t believe they keep nominating the same actors every year….Really?!?!? There aren’t any other actors on Y&R and B&B than Flannery, Stafford, LeBlanc and Thom?

Seriously the lamest actors get nominated…Heather Thom is barely on B&B and the guy who plays Liam is truly terrible! Barely better than Ronn Moss who reads his lines from cue cards, yeah, he’s that bad!

Katherine Kelly Lang is criminally overdue…she’s carried Ronn Moss waaaaaaaay too long!

On Y&R, Melody Thomas Scott, Eileen Davidson, Amelia Heinle (Victoria), Marcy Faith (Abby), Peter Bergman, Michael Graziadei all have done better work than most of those nominees…at least Billy Miller won last year. There are too many other deserving actors on these soaps.

      • WTF?!?!?

Oh yeah forgot Doug Davidson…so has the audience cuz he’s barely on…why was he nominated? C’mon people!!!

      • cattyfan

The Emmy period used for consideration includes the aftermath of Paul’s sister Patty going completely crazy…hence Doug Davidson’s nomination. He was OUTSTANDING, and deserves to win.

      • Captain

I must agree. I get that she’s a wonderful actress but does Laura Wright have to be nominated every year? Most will disagree but I wish that Kelly Monaco had been nominated this year. She’s given some truly outstanding performances that went unrecognized.

      • Scott M

Captain, I do not believe Laura Wright has ever been nominated while on GH.

  • Rebecca

Alicia Minshew should win. Other than Susan Lucci, she carries AMC. Debbi Morgan is great, but doesn’t have as much of an impact.

    • Tess

You’re so right – Alicia Minshew should totally win. Her scenes after Zach’s death were so powerful and moving, how anyone could not pick her to win is beyond me. I love Debbi Morgan too, but her storyline last year was so contrived and annoying it wasn’t even worthy of her acting talent and doesn’t match Minshew’s excellence this past year.

Melissa Claire Egan should win too because nobody does crazy better than she did.

I can’t believe the “experts” didn’t even consider these women as possible winners.

      • Tim

Not hating on her for the sake of it but I really thought Minshew’s acting was lacking in many emotional scenes. I don’t even think she should be nominated. I think she’s strong just not at the emotional stuff.

  • Beauty

Jonathan Jackson HANDS DOWN!!!!! He is simply AMAZING!

    • Tim

I heard about the “original Lucky” from other fans for years. When he finally returned to GH, I saw what all the fuss was about. He has some real acting chops.

  • DJ

I’m rooting for Stafford, Cast, and Bergman. Not so much for LeBlanc. He didn’t have much of a story this year.

    • DJ

I meant Billy Miller. Not Bergman. He didnt get a nom. But he should have. I love LeBlanc but he gets a nom every year.

  • Dee Jones

Can someone please tell me why on earth wasn`t Stacy Haiduk from Y&R wasn`t nominated? She stole the show with Patty Williams/Emily. She was definately robbed. Good luck to Tricia Cast though. She`s always good.

  • Debbie M

Jonathan Jackson hands down for the win. He is simply the best actor on TV, daytime or otherwise.

  • LM

I agree, Jonathan Jackson is the best actor on daytime TV and definitely deserves this award. I first saw him in a movie several years ago – On The Edge. If you think he’s good on GH, you will love him in this. It’s about teen suicide filmed in Ireland. Best part, he plays a supporting role with my all time favorite, Cillian Murphy. Jonathan even got the Irish accent down pretty good.

    • pai

I’ve added On the Edge to my Netflix queue, thanks for the heads up, LM.

    • Melly

kednra326 on September 4, 2011 I just had a baby girl about a month ago and so I love that they offer beautiful organic burp cloths. The bubblegum chocolate mouse colors are absolutely adorable. I love that their products are organic because we are a green family as much as we can be.

  • Pilar

I hope Alicia Minshew wins the award. She was great in her scenes where Zach dies.

  • Robbyrob

B&B’s skid row storyline was a joke…let alone award worthy. Didn’t Stephanie have a PRIOR skid row storyline? Remember when she had amnesia years ago and ended up there? Talk about repeating yourself. Meanwhile, a show set in the fashion world in Los Angeles has NO gay characters yet. BUT, they can up with 101 ways to have Brooke sleep with younger men…who may be related to her or dating her daughters.

Hopefully, GH will NOT win for best show. Guza has turned that show into a crap filled hour. Katie Couric is the least of GH’s problems. New Head writer Garin Wolf is hardly left with anything by Guza to work with. Meanwhile, all of GH’s viewers have deserted it in droves over the past decade.

I’ll watch the Emmys as they might not be on again…I mean, who will they nominate when only 3 soaps are left? Most of the viewers of the Emmys are fans of the soaps, not talk shows (even though I love Ellen), game shows, childrens shows, or who gets the Lifetime Achievement award. I hope Brian Frons attends and he is booed the whole night!

    • reece

Ohhh..totally agree with B&Bs lack of gay characters. Such a great point about B&B.

    • Lola

I agree totally about Brooke. She is a HO! Either sleeps with a guy who’s last name is Forrester or sleeps with one of her daughters’ boyfriends and gets pregnant by them! Even though I thought she & Deacon had more chemistry than the tired and can not act Ridge.

      • Robbyrob

        Lola,

I agree! A big problem with B&B is that they rush so many storylines. So many characters fall in love at the blink of an eye. Wouldn’t it be more interesting to have Thomas be gay? What would this mean to Ridge? Taylor? The storylines would be endless and put an end to the constant Brooke sleeping around mantra. The island plot with Brooke and Thomas was stupid. Brad Bell is smart, but hallucinagenic berries???? Really?! Are they that desperate to demonize Brooke? BTW, I Zzzz during Thomas and Daisy’s scenes.

    • Sunny

Well I guess I’m not alone! As I metioned (on 6/19/11/)the story line is so stupid and stuck on the hullucinogenic berries, that I am not going to continue to waste my time watching it any longer!!!….I do watch the Y&R and am never bored…I was so used to a good soap opera, I assumed the the B&B would offer the same enjoyment, but not so…BROING…all the way, anyway you look at it….Just can’t figure out what the story line is…Something is missing, but I can’t put my finger on it….

  • reece

I think Laura Wright has been snubbed for way too long! Give her the Emmy!! Johnathan Jackson has either cried or has been on the verge of tears in every episode he’s in. Give him the Emmy! I would love for Michael Park and Tricia cast to see Emmy gold. And I’ll agree B&B had a good season last year. This year…not so much. Magic mushrooms? Really?

  • Kevin

CBS better cancel THE PRICE IS RIGHT by next year or we riot just like what happens in Vancouver.

  • Flip

Tricia Cast for the win! She’s the only deserving Y&R nominee.

  • Derrick

    B&B better win Best Drama!!!!
Tricia Cast for the win and Michelle Stafford, too!!!

  • Spike

Sorry, but COLLEEN ZENK deserves to win Best Actress. If anyone else wins, it’s just a popularity contest and no one is actually judging reels anymore.

    TEAM COLLEEN!!

    • AC

Really? Because she played so well with the plastic clown for a month.
