The Critics’ Choice Television Awards — created by the recently established Broadcast Television Critics Association — were designed in part to be a counterpoint to the annual Emmy Awards (and the more established TCA Awards). The winners of the first annual CCTAs, however, echoed several Emmy winners of the recent past: AMC’s Mad Men took home Best Drama; ABC’s Modern Family won Best Comedy; Best Actress in a Comedy went to 30 Rock‘s Tina Fey; and The Big Bang Theory‘s Jim Parsons earned Best Actor in a Comedy.

The majority of winners, however, have not snagged an Emmy award — or, in some cases, even a nomination — but remain long-standing fan favorites. Mad Men‘s Jon Hamm and Christina Hendricks won Best Actor and Supporting Actress in a Drama, respectively; Hendricks actually tied in her category with Margo Martindale from FX’s Justified. John Noble of Fringe won Best Supporting Actor in a Drama, and Cougar Town‘s Busy Philipps won Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy. Check out the full list of winners below:

John Noble is overdue as is Kyle Chandler from Friday Night Lights

    • Thurston Howell

Hendricks was an obvious win too.

    • Holla

I agree! Its high time Noble won some recognition for his wonderful work on Fringe.

  • Rob

Modern Family and Tina Fey. Again. Seems like it’s right out of the Emmy playbook. Boring. Thank god for Busy Phillips.

    • HD

      Busy Phillips!!!!

    • Isla

SO happy Busy Phillips won! bug hooker.

      • Lindsay

        LAUGH

    • bob

I agree, both 30 Rock (no offense to Fey) and Modern Family were not even in my top 3 for good comedies this year. What about Parks and Rec? It was much better this year.

    • McProphet

FINALLY some Cougar Town love! She’s brilliant on that show, and I agree that I’m over the Mad Men/30 Rock lovefest that we witness EVERY YEAR. 30 rock stopped being funny like 3 seasons ago.

    • MrBilliam

This season of Modern Family was, in my opinion, not as good as last season’s. I personally would have put Parks and Recreation, Community, and Cougar Town all above it (probably in that order), though I know not everyone agrees.

  • wendy

    John Noble, yeah!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Burton Guster

I’m so glad Noble is getting SOME recognition. But Jim Parson’s for best comedy actor?? Heck no!! This season he was totally over the top, and he really wasn’t that funny. I watch that show every week, but even I know he didn’t do a great job this season. Should’ve given it to Steve Carrell, or heck, any one else!

      • tracy bluth

I’m happy he’s finally getting recognition too!!! In my perfect world Anna Torv would’ve won as well.
Of the episodes I’ve seen I’ve never found The Big Bang Theory or Jim Parson to be funny at all.

      • Nikki

I so agree. I did not enjoy the fourth season at all.

  • Thurston Howell

Hendricks for the win!!! What a babe!

  • Molly

    No Community wins? Fail

  • Derek Thompson

Sounds like they tried to sneak in a few underdogs but felt like they had to put in a few mainstream “automatic” answers from the Emmies so that they would look “credible”.

  • fbdbpw

Glad modern family won but when doesnt mad men win best drama series

    • Anna

The last Golden Globes and SAG.

      • Jacob

        Anna, he was being facetious.

      • Jacob

        @ ANNA

        Oops, nevermind.

    • Jacob

This is the first year when Mad Men actually deserved to win. I have a love/hate relationship with the show cuz its beating out LOST the last couple of years, but even I have to admit that season 4 was freaking amazing.

  • sam

Would have liked to see more love for Justified, but at least there were nominations and Margo Martindale wonn.

  • sam

    that’s “won.”

  • psyche

Aside from John Noble and Busy Phillips this is pretty dull – all these people/shows are at least nominated for Emmys year after year. It would have been nice to see some true underdogs/people/shows under the radar get some love.

(But yay! for John Noble anyway — love Walter and love to hate Walternate)

  • tvgirl48

This is great to see for Cougar Town. The show is gaining momentum with critics but has yet to get recognized at large as the quality comedy it is. The role of Laurie could have easily been too irritating and hackneyed, but Busy Phillips makes her a unique, lovable character.

  • Chloe

What the heck does Elisabeth Moss have to do to win an award?! I know everyone loves The Good Wife, but Moss was amazing on Mad Men this past season.

    • Barry

And Julianna Margulies was nothing short of spectacular.

    • tracy bluth

I don’t watch The Good Wife so I probably can’t judge, but I would’ve loved the see the award either go to Elizabeth Moss or Anna Torv.

    • Ray

I love the work Elisabeth Moss does on that show, but Julianna Margulies is miles past everyone else this year, male or female.

    • sam

She has to sex herself up. They obviously only give awards to the mad men actors they want to sleep with.

      • guest

The 3 actresses from Mad Men who get all the media attention are the ones tht do, in the series and outside.Women on Tv still have to wear tons of make-up apparentle and high heels with tight skirts.
When I saw clips of the Good Wife i was looking for Juliana Marguilis face underneath all that make-up,I remmbered her from ER.

I have read a lot of criticism directed at Anna Torv, simply because Olivia Dunham wears a suit, flat sensible shoes and a pony tail, not much make-up. A bit sad that women on TV are still looked at that way.

      • Sal

You’re comparing an FBI agent who is chasing and beating down bad guys with a lawyer and secretaries? I’m hoping this isn’t your personal opinion.

      • rhonda reinhold

Margo Martindale didn’t wear make-up (or comb her hair), high heels, and tight clothing but won the best supporting actress award for her portrayal as a terrifying hillbilly crime lord matriarch.

  • Lunna

    John Noble! Finally something!!

  • Amy

So disappointed by the lack of Parks and Rec love! I thought this would be the one awards show that would give Amy Poehler and Parks and Rec the due it deserves.

  • Michael

    that’s disappointing
