    EPIC.

    • Lily

Amazing. How awesome is Daenerys Targaryen? WOW.

    • sarah

Emilia Clarke did an amazing job with Dany. And the bebe dragons were adorable! Here’s to killing the season 2 budget with cgi dragons!

      • wino

she really has impressed me. really, one of the most fascinating characters on this show. and now she has dragons?! oh, cant wait for the fun to begin.

      • Tim W

She impressed me as well. She has a way of looking vulnerable while also being strong and determined. This is the exact way I pictured Dany from the books.

    • tim

LOVE IT. am i the only one who wants her to fall in love with jorah though?? team jorah!

      • Blunt

I’m predicting Dragons > White Walkers = Danny + Jon Snow rescuing the kingdom & thereby winning back the crown.

        Spoiler:

        book 3 ruins your hopes

      • Linda

ABSOLUTELY!! He’scertainly already in love with her.

      • JD

Yeah dragons would be the perfect solution to white walkers. I also agree that’s where it’s heading…or WOULD be heading, unless George decides to add a few cruel twists for us…

      • Kelsey

The only way to get rid of a wight is to burn it, so … yes, dragons would work!

      • Kayla

Don’t stop at Book 3 though! Book 4 brings back hope in my mind! lol

      • jim

I’m going to agree with part of what blunt says; Jon + Dany will cement everything south of the wall. I don’t want to put any spoilers out, but GRRM still has much to do with the people still around when Dance comes out July 12th. There are some interesting possibilities north of the wall, and with what dany accomplishes before she returns to westeros.

    • marin

I know. I love it. I cannot wait.

    • steph

the dragon is like “COME AT ME BRO”

    • Trenton

Rhargar Targaryan should be played by Tom Welling!

      • Kelsey

He’d have to dye his hair and it could only be in flashbacks, but sure.

  • Brad in Vancouver

What the f@ck is this image supposed to signify???? Can you give some context for those of us that don’t waste our time with this show ??

    • PNNC

If you don’t waste your time with the show, then why do you give a f@uck what the image signifies?

      • DW

        Excellent point!

      • stacy

        great response PNNC!!!! ROFL!!!!

      • Tony Stark

        Exactly!!!

    • Really?

Yeah, I have to ask if you don’t watch the show, (and clearly haven’t read the books), then why are you taking the time to post borderline offensive (and over-the-border stupid) comments?

      • Melissa

        LMAO @Really? “over-the-border stupid”

      • xxc

borderline = might be, might not be
        over-the-border = definitely is

      • steph

There’s a difference between offensive and stupid people! sheesh. Something can be not quite offensive, but can definitely be stupid. That’s what “really?” was saying. It’s not rocket science.

    • eddard

I believe it signifies that you’re a tool.

      • boom!

I was thinking more along the lines of douchebag or jackass.

      • AJ

        Agree!!

      • Hen

        THIS!

      • Larry

        It is known!

      • Tony Stark

        CHURCH!!!

    • Krauss

Brad must have gotten his head smashed in when his fellow citizens freaked out and rioted over losing a dumb hockey game.

      • District 12

        lol, best comment here

      • Elle

Here in Europe we always hear that Canadians are “so much nicer and friendlier and more laid-back than Americans”…
        So much for that…

      • Really???

Sure, let’s stereotype all Canadians because of a bunch of drunk jackasses obsessed with an overly violent sport. Don’t for one minute think that the rest of Canadians weren’t just as upset as anyone else over that stupidity.

      • Victor

Hey, don’t bring hockey into this, The guy is just an idiot, but don’t assume that folks who follow hockey are violent morons.

      • ZoeStars

the people who rioted were there to riot. They would’ve rioted regardless of us winning or losing. They came with all the supplies needed and just wanted to cause chaos. And believe me, Vancouver is PISSED about it. That was not our city. And if you checked the internet at all, you would see what we’re trying to do to catch the people who were rioting and how we’re cleaning up the city. How about instead of saying we’re all hockey obsessed rioting freaks, you actually take a lot at what the MAJORITY of vancouverites and Canadians think about the riots. Most people were just trying to escape the downtown core, not destroy it.

      • GoT fan

It’s amazing how people can let one idiot with a stupid comment, ruin the rest of the post, and everyone stops commenting about the show or the picture, and starts feeding the frenzy of the idiotic.

I really find that Dany is coming into her own and her character is getting stronger and stronger. Some ppl commented before that they didn’t like her; I bet they’re changing their minds now.

    • k

Go back to burning you city down.

    • Sal

@Brad in Vancouver – if you don’t want to waste your time with the show… don’t waste my time with your idiocy!

    • darthwilson

Why the hell are you posting in here if you don’t waste your time with this show!

    • crispy

@Brad: Since no one else will give you a proper answer, the blond chick is a princess living in exile. She’s descended from a long line of kings who used dragons to conquer their kingdom, but all the dragons died out centuries ago. She’s been carrying around 3 dragon eggs that were given to her as a wedding gift, and in the cliffhanger season finale the eggs hatched into 3 baby dragons.
Pick it up when it comes out on DVD. It’s a phenomenal story.

      • L

Thank you, Crispy. I was wondering the same thing. Alas, no HBO.

      • watergirl

I do feel it is important to point out that when the three dragon eggs were presented to Daenerys Targaryen during the wedding feast, there were described very specifically. The book text is “Dragon’s eggs, from the Shadow Lands beyond the As$hai. The eons have turned them to stone yet still they burn bright with beauty”. In the HBO show, the phrase is “Dragon’s eggs, Daenerys, from the Shadow Lands beyond the As$hai. The ages have turned them to stone but they will always be beautiful”. Herein lies the wow factor: her actions which caused the eggs to hatch, and the fact that the eggs were stone prior to her act.

        Plus, she’s stunningly breathtaking.
        ~watergirl~

      • jim

I’ve read the series twice so far. I recently started the first book again to refresh myself for Dance next month. I’m continually amazed at how true to the series they are. Of course there are some minor differences, but they are irrelevant. A friend of mine called bull on Dany not being burned to death. I had to take the time to explain that her line comes from the blood of dragons which allows Dany to crossover to the mother of dragons. Overall I’m looking forward to the next book and Season 2.

    • cjm

Please, Please Brad be from Vancouver, WA, not BC.

      • tlw

I don’t think WA wants him either

    • BookWorm

      Troll.

    • Adam Selene

It’s your mom and dad. Geez, go away.

    • ETM

      Troll-feeding time.

    • Bob

Not to pile on, but Troll. Major league troll. Troll of the highest order. Troll infinity.

    • LOLZ Kat

All your Stanley Cups now belong to us!

    • MaMaG

If you need an explination then watch the show! How simple is that!

    • Mark

It’s one of the climaxes of the first book, a ritual where Daenerys put herself and those closest to her in a raging fire pit. They traded their lives to give life to petrified dragon eggs. Daenerys rises from the ashes, her clothes burned off but herself unharmed, with three new baby dragons (which have been extinct for a couple of generations at this point)

    • Amazon woman

Funny, if he had watched the show he would have probably appreciated the lower half of this picture! (but then he would have probably wasted his energy with some frat-boy wise-acre slobber comment.

    • Nathan

Brad is more likely to waste his time watching a hockey team that chokes every single year, Loooooooooo-ser.

    • Dragon fan

Wow, Brad, if you really are from Vancouver, it seems impossible, but you make the city look even worse.

    • Atom Manhattan

Isn’t it obvious Vancouver’s full of retards? I haven’t watched the show but this intrigues the hell outta me…

    • Lester

Wow! Did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed or did your team just lose the Stanley Cup? I guess this is what you can expect from a city that chants USA s*#@% at the World Junior Hockey Championsip after 9/11, and the U.S. Junior team wasn’t even playing.

    • GDI

She just ‘gave birth’ to 3 dragons. In the tv clip she is naked (with the other two crawling on other parts of her body). It is quite a stunning ending (dragons were supposed to be extinct…until now!)

      • volusiagal

No…no…no… SHE didn’t give birth to the dragons!! They hatched in the intense fire of the funeral pyre for Drago. They had been incubating for months as Deny kept them near flame (candles).

  • boom!

Can’t afford HBO but will get GoT on bluray ASAP– thanks for the image; as an avid reader of the series, you are right, we have waited a long time for this!!! Looks better than I could have imagined!!!

  • Levi

I’m proud that this series is following the story of the novels almost exactly. And this photo is LEGIT!!!

  • Merrydan

I was extremely worried about the dragons, but they pulled it off beyond my expectations. The series as a whole as well was done brilliantly. (My only gripe being is the lack of direwolves.)

    • tiff

      ditto all of this!

    • ThroneFan51

Never fear. The direwolves play a bigger part in future books(i.e. Season 2+) as Bran’s abilities expand. You’ll get to see some direwolf mauling eventually.

      • sarah

Actually, the producer interviews EW posted state that the lack of direwolves is budget. They ARE more prevalent in book 1 than seen in the show, but DB & Dan state they can’t show them as often because of budget reasons.

  • kdavis

I was wondering if the dragon babies would be breastfeeding like they were in the book. I guess that would be kind of difficult to render?

    • Andrew Bator

      the yellow one was

    • nemui

I’m glad they left that out… baby *reptiles* breastfed? Don’t know what GRRM was smoking.

      • Bob

They didn’t leave it out. One was breastfeeding.

      • herbapou

Its discreet, but its there. They didnt made it obvious so most people who didnt read the books didnt notice. I was not even sure of it until a rewatch it in replay.

      • Jess

reptiles don’t breastfeed. Only mammals by-definition produce milk for their young.

        Watching some David Attenborough.

  • Mamma Mia

I have not read the books; however as a Fantasy/sci-fi enthusiast quietly hoped that there would be dragons. The ending was everything I could have wished for. I would like to express my thanks to all the fans out there who have read the books and never spoiled the fun for those of us who haven’t. This is a great show … can’t wait for season 2. I’m torn, do I want to get the books and read ahead or should I stay in the dark?
    Winter is coming!

    • Bob Smiley

Read the books! Never did until I got into the show, and I almost like I read the 1st one with the first few episodes. The HBO version does follow the books really closely, but the books fill in all sorts of wonderful details, better explains the motivations of the participants, etc etc.

Song of Fire and Ice is a must read, into book 3 now!

      • ThroneFan51

The books also change your opinion of the characters as you go (something I hope the series mirrors). The best example is Jaime Lannister. Once the story starts being told from his perspective, you understand him a lot better and he becomes a sympathetic character rather than just the personification of evil.

      • herbapou

@ThroneFan51 He did not finish Ned after he got injured. So we already see it does have some honor in him.

    • Blonde Geek

I read the first book about halfway through the show. I did not regret it one bit! Have started the second and will hopefully chew through the series. I picked up a lot of character development by reading the book and it only made me more excited about watching the show.

      • orville

I was going to start reading the books over the summer, but I think I’ll hold off. I really, really liked being as shocked and surprised as I was during the last two episodes. I want that sort of shock and awe to continue throughout the series.

    • Marcus

If you’re a fantasy fan, there’s no reason not to read the books. George RR Martin is arguably the best the genre has to offer, it avoids most of the normal fantasy pitfalls and manages to tell a compelling human story, with characters that are easy to relate to. There’s very little like it in the genre, which is a bit sad because clearly the medium can be used for more than Mary Sue’s, magical rings and good versus ultimate evil.

      • Mimi

I have enjoyed the show more than I could have ever imagined. I was afraid to read the books because sometimes, it can be so disappointing when scripts are so far off, but based on comments like this, I most def. will read them!!!

      • Malcolm

a little off topic but if you like gritty unconventional fantasy storytelling try Joe Abercrombies first law series(3books) The Blade Itself is the first book,an excellent read

  • Andrea D

    new desktop background!!!!

    • Sal

      Excellent Idea!!!

    • Emily

I was thinking the same thing!

    • Kelly

      great idea!

    • Marco

Like to have a 4k kb image of this.

  • Herbert Gambill

Dany: “Say hello to my little friend!”

    • Cate Trevena

      Now that’s a comment I can love!

  • Edan-Kane Soledad

WOW!! Great episode. I change my mind. I will continue watching “Game of Thrones”. I am looking forward to Season 2.

  • Michelle

The dragons were everything I had hoped for. Excellent work!

  • crispy

So that one is Drogon? I want a picture with all three!

    • Gabi

      Drogon!! LOLOLOLOLOL!

      *sobs quietly for Drogo*

      • balerion

Drogon is the actual name of the black dragon. viserion and rhaegal are the others. named for Drogo, Viserys, and Rhaegar/Rhaego

    • RyanK

Lol EW can’t. Any picture with all three would have a very naked Dany in it.

  • Joanie 22

Great episode last night. It left us hanging on all fronts. Can’t wait until the Spring of 2012. I can only hope that Joffrey will ultimately be dragon food. Neat dragon. Thanks. I too am reading the first novel.

    • vicki

that was my exact comment to my husband… I can’t wait until those dragons eat that little jerk and his mother!

      • ThroneFan51

Just remember that in this series, Martin show us time and again that good does not always triumph. (Prime example: Ned Stark.)

      • herbapou

@ThroneFan51 Tell me about it, I just finish reading the Arya part of book 2 and its very good, but so painful.

I am reading 3 characters one after the other before I read the rest. Arya, Jon and Dany. My friends dont approuve but I like it more this way. There story is pretty much isolated from the rest so its doable without too many spoils.

  • Mike

I haven’t seen the series and it’s been a while since I read the first book… but… wasn’t she like, 12, or 14, or something we consider “young” in the book version?

    • crispy

They aged most of the kids for the show… probably because of all the boobies.

      • Mike

Gotcha. Is it worth watching, for someone who’s a fan of the books, or should I just continue to rely on the mental images I built up as I read them? And is there anything jarringly wrong (like there was with 70% of the fourth Harry Potter movie?) that would ruin the series in its own right?

      • crispy

There’s definitely nothing wrong as they follow the books VERY closely. I think it’s worth watching, though I do agree your mental images are typically much better.

      • Bob

When I read the books, all of the kids were a little young (even by historical standards) for their behaviours. Pretty much all of them have been aged by 2-3 years for the show and I think it was a good decision.

      • Kelsey

Aging the kids was, I think, a very smart and reasonable change from the books. It also probably helped them have a better handle on the actors. In the first book, Robb and Jon, for example, are only 14-15. Danaerys is 13-turning-14, Sansa is 11 and Arya is only 9. Bran is I think 7, and Rickon is only 3. Given some of their subplots (such as Danaerys getting married and having sex), I think it was prudent to age them.

  • Steffie26

My only gripe…is that I gotta wait until Spring for the new season! It was hard enough waiting for Sunday night. I’m such a junkie.
